guidelines for sustained growth in the EU the concept and consequences of the broad Economic Policy guidelines
Social Science Research Network, 2005Co-Authors: Eckhard Hein, Torsten NiechojAbstract:The Broad Economic Policy Guidelines contain the answers of the EUropean Commission and the governments of the EU-member countries to the EUropean growth and employment problems. These guidelines have been the major EU-Economic Policy concept for around ten years now. They can be seen as a synthesis of the Economic Policy regime dominating the EU since the early to mid 1990s. However, this concept has not been able to generate sustained growth and low unemployment in the EU as a whole. Examining the guidelines we show the weaknesses of the underlying Economic Policy model and outline an alternative concept which promises more growth and employment for EUrope in the long run.

transmission of us and EU Economic Policy uncertainty shock to asian economies in bad and good times
Social Science Research Network, 2020Co-Authors: Mehmet Balcilar, Zeynel Abidin Ozdemir, Huseyin Baran Ozdemir, Mark E WoharAbstract:This study empirically examines the fragility of five major Asian economies (China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, and South Korea) to Economic Policy uncertainty (EPU) of US and EU, and oil prices in different state of the economies. To investigate these dynamics, we use the relative tail dependence by means of the spillover index of Diebold and Yilmaz (2009, 2012) obtained from Quantile Vector Auto-regressive (QVAR) model, a robust and semi-parametric model, which does not require specification of the full distribution of error terms. The distinguishing feature of our approach from the previous studies is the determination of sign and intensity of asymmetric spillover dynamics from external shocks to Asian economies and variables covering a wide range of macroEconomic aspects. Our results indicate that the spillover indices from EPU and oil price shocks to Asian economies significantly vary across quantiles. The results from sub-sample analysis show that the US EPU has an asymmetric effect on macro variables of China, Hong Kong, and South Korea during the quantitative easing period (QE) and the reverse QE (RQE) periods while the EU EPU makes Asian markets vulnerable during the EUrozone debt crisis. The large-scale asset purchases (LSAPs) of ECB and BoJ seem to reduce Asian market fragilities after 2015. Last but not least, we get partial evidence to support an asymmetric effect of the crude oil shocks on some Asian markets.

parochialism in EU Economic Policy case study between the boeing company and the airbus company
International Journal of Technology Policy and Management, 2006Co-Authors: Daniel Erian ArmaniosAbstract:The mechanisms for EUropean Union (EU) Economic Policy making mandate that for Common Commercial Policy (CCP) to be effective, the EU must directly negotiate with member states. Its mission to create cooperation forces the EU to bypass national governments and directly target parochial governments due to the need to rapidly mobilise human capital to account for real-time industrial changes. This work attempts to address this issue using the aeronautic industry, which requires EUropean cooperation and regularly interacts with US Economic interests. Each EUropean country involved in the aeronautic industry is analysed on how they individually make Policy and at what parochial levels the EU must interact with in making CCP. These assertions are validated using the case study of the subsidies conflict between Boeing and Airbus and illustrate the tension between EUropean and US Economic Policy.
