New Exploratory Phase in Research on East European Cultures of Dissent: Joint Review Report
2019Co-Authors: Maciej Maryl, Piotr Wciślik, Muriel Blaive, James Kapaló, Zsófia Lóránd, Jan Mervart, Katalin Cseh-varga, Rolf Werenskjold, Ferenc Laczó, Tamás ScheibnerAbstract:The present document, the Joint Review Report (JRR), concludes the first stage of COST Action 16213, New Exploratory Phase in Research on East European Cultures of Dissent (NEP4DISSENT), which is aimed at leveraging the power of an international, multidisciplinary, and technology-conscious research network to survey the state of the art and chart new directions in scholarship. The JRR builds on and deepens the shared framework for the understanding of the methodological and conceptual challenges to the state of the art in this domain of research (described in Section 1), which has brought together a large and diverse group of scholars, curators, and digital humanities practitioners (see further in Section 2). This group grew into a robust and integrated research network through the process of the State of the Art Review (SotAR), whose outcome the JRR now presents to a wider audience. The SotAR process (described in Section 3) was designed to pool together research agendas and to identify specific focus areas into which this Action will intervene in order to trigger a new exploratory phase in research on Eastern European Cultures of dissent. The chapters of this report, each prepared by a different NEP4DISSENT Working Group (WG), represent the outcomes of the SotAR process.

Towards a New Exploratory Phase in Research on East European Cultures of Dissent
2018Co-Authors: Piotr Wciślik, Maciej MarylAbstract:This survey will contribute to core activities of the COST Action 16213, New Exploratory Phase in Research on East European Cultures of Dissent (NEP4DISSENT, 2017-2021). We are an international and multidisciplinary scholarly network some 170 people strong, funded by the COST Association in the framework of the Horizon 2020 Work Programme of the EU. NEP4DISSENT is founded upon the conviction that resistance and dissent in former socialist Europe 1945-1989 constitutes a remarkable chapter of Europe’s recent past, which not only informs in a decisive way the identities of post-socialist societies today, but has also reshaped the continent as a whole and still provides an important reference for contemporary social movements worldwide. Building on the achievements of this field of study and the respective domain of cultural heritage, NEP4DISSENT will trigger the next phase in the discovery of that legacy through forging new, reflexive approaches and providing a platform for creating an international research network, designed to cross-fertilize and consolidate national research agendas and incubate novel collaborative initiatives, taking advantage of cutting-edge digital humanities tools and methods, as well as strengthening the capacity for dissemination through cooperation with art and cultural heritage curators.

experiential avoidance as a common psychological process in European Cultures
European Journal of Psychological Assessment, 2018Co-Authors: Jeanlouis Monestes, Maria Karekla, Nele Jacobs, Michalis P Michaelides, Nic Hooper, Marco Kleen, Francisco J Ruiz, Giovanni Miselli, Giovambattista Presti, Carmen LucianoAbstract:Abstract. Experiential avoidance, the tendency to rigidly escape or avoid private psychological experiences, represents one of the most prominent transdiagnostic psychological processes with a known role in a wide variety of psychological disorders and practical contexts. Experiential avoidance is argued to be based on a fundamental verbal/cognitive process: an overextension of verbal problem solving into the world within. Although Cultures apparently differ in their patterns of emotional expression, to the extent that experiential avoidance is based on a fundamental verbal/cognitive process, measures of this process should be comparable across countries, with similar relationships to health outcomes regardless of the language community. This research tests this view in European countries. The psychometric properties of the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II, a measure of experiential avoidance, are compared across six languages and seven European countries, for a total of 2,170 nonclinical participan...

Chemical composition and nutraceutical properties of hempseed: an ancient food with actual functional value
Phytochemistry Reviews, 2018Co-Authors: Giuseppina Crescente, Simona Piccolella, Assunta Esposito, Monica Scognamiglio, Antonio Fiorentino, Severina PacificoAbstract:The seeds of hemp ( Cannabis sativa L.) have been an important source of nutrition for thousands of years in Chinese and European Cultures but, nowadays, in spite of the multiple clinical evidence, which highlights their huge health-promoting properties, people are still unaware about their nutritional as well as nutraceutical benefits. Indeed, the extraordinary richness of essential polyunsaturated fatty acids is odds with oxidative stability of hemp seed by-products. This is the reason for which different and innovative extractive strategies are daily employed, as well as the preservation of antioxidant hemp seed phenols and polyphenols is claimed as a key issue to pursue. Recent insights into the phenol and cannabinoid baggage of hemp seed highlight it is an inestimable source of health promoting ingredients. This review aims to provide a detailed and updated background for research on seeds of this niche crop, pointing out the chemistry and bioactivity of their phytochemicals.

Diffusing Tort Law Softly: Insights into the Travels of Italian Tort Law
Journal of European Tort Law, 2015Co-Authors: Marta InfantinoAbstract:The paper examines how, where, and why Italian tort law rules have circulated within Europe since the enactment of unified Italy’s first Civil Code in 1865. By tracing the fragmented historical and geographical patterns of diffusion of Italian tort law in the last 150 years, the paper offers itself as a case-study for thinking about legal transplants within and across European Cultures
