    There is much evidence that Event Management is being recognised as a significant sector of the international tourism and leisure industries. While Event Management research is increasingly international, there is a paucity of research on the cultural dimensions of Event Management. Considering that Event Management activity is commissioned by different cultural groups and Events increasingly cross cultural boundaries, it is imperative that Event Management professionals broaden their understanding of the philosophical underpinnings of different cultures.

    Abstract:

    Event Management associations provide newcomers and existing practitioners with the necessary skills to ensure the continued growth and success of Event Management professionals. This paper reviews the literature on professional associations and specifically explores the services that Event Management associations offer to members, then concludes that Event Management associations have a strong record in offering a variety of professional services to members as part of their operational framework. The services offered by these associations have been ascertained by examining the significant themes that emerge from an analysis of their services. The key services that were identified were in the educational, communication, business, community, advocacy, and buying power categories.

    Abstract:

    As Event Management emerges to become a key sector of the tourism and leisure industries worldwide there is increasing need for tertiary educated Event managers, and for evaluations of Event Management curriculum. By using in-depth interviews as the method of inquiry, this paper reports the results from an analysis of Event Management curriculum in Finnish higher education. The paper provides a context for Event Management education in Finland by presenting brief backgrounds on the educational system, differences between universities and polytechnics, and current tourism and leisure programs which incorporate Event Management. It then provides a summary of key findings specifically relating to education in Event Management and suggests a series of preliminary conclusions. This study establishes a platform from which to develop an investigative framework which can be used in comparative studies of Event Management curricula worldwide. Apart from curriculum evaluation however, it can also be used as the basis for training needs analyses and creates a better understanding and compatibility between Event Management education and industry practice.

This paper reviews the literature on professional associations and specifically explores the educational role of Event Management associations. It concludes that professional Event Management associations play a significant role in providing strategic direction to the Event Management industry. An important component of this is providing educational direction and services that aim at professionalising Event Management and Event Management practitioners.
