Reduction of Inhomogeneous Broadening of Exciton Luminescence in CdxZn1-xSe Ternary Alloys and CdxZn1-xSe–ZnSe Multiple Quantum Wells Grown by Molecular-Beam Epitaxy under Se-Excess Supply
Japanese Journal of Applied Physics, 1999Co-Authors: Masakatsu Fujimoto, Hiroshi Shigematsu, Kazuhiko Senda, Mitsutoshi Yoshikawa, Hachiya Kubo, Yoichi Yamada, Tsunemasa TaguchiAbstract:Optical and structural properties of CdxZn1-xSe ternary alloy layers grown by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE) have been studied as a function of the Se/(Cd, Zn) beam pressure ratio (BPR). With increasing Se/(Cd, Zn) BPR, the inhomogeneous broadening of exciton luminescence and the rms roughness of surfaces decreased drastically. This indicates that Se-Excess Supply during MBE growth suppresses alloy composition fluctuation and also enhances two-dimensional growth nucleation. Furthermore, CdxZn1-xSe–ZnSe multiple quantum well (MQW) structures have been fabricated under Se-Excess Supply. Biexciton luminescence from MQW structures was observed, even under a cw weak excitation condition (less than 100 mW/cm2). This observation reflects the finding that exciton lifetime increase as a result of the improvement of crystalline quality, which results in the enhancement of carrier accumulation.

An Estimated New-Keynesian Model with Unemployment as Excess Supply of Labor
Journal of Macroeconomics, 2014Co-Authors: Miguel Casares, Antonio Moreno, Jesús VázquezAbstract:Wage stickiness is incorporated to a New-Keynesian model with variable capital to drive endogenous unemployment fluctuations defined as the log difference between aggregate labor Supply and aggregate labor demand. We estimated such model using Bayesian econometric techniques and quarterly US data. The second-moment statistics of the unemployment rate in the model provide a reasonable fit to those observed in US data. Our results also show that mainly wage-push shocks together with demand shifts and monetary policy shocks are the major determinants of unemployment fluctuations. Compared to an estimated New-Keynesian model without unemployment (Smets and Wouters 2007): wage stickiness is higher, labor Supply elasticity is lower, the slope of the New-Keynesian Phillips curve is flatter, and the importance of technology innovations on output variability increases.

Unemployment as Excess Supply of Labor
2011Co-Authors: Miguel Casares, Jesús VázquezAbstract:Wage stickiness is incorporated to a New-Keynesian model with variable capital in a way that generates endogenous unemployment fluctuations as the difference between aggregate labor Supply and aggregate labor demand. After estimation with U.S. data, the implied second-moment statistics of the unemployment rate provide a reasonable match with those observed in the data. Our results also show that wage-push shocks, demand shifts and monetary policy shocks are the three major determinants of unemployment fluctuations. Compared to an estimated canonical DSGE model without unemployment: wage stickiness is higher, labor Supply elasticity is lower, the slope of the New-Keynesian Phillips curve is flatter, and the importance of technology innovations on output growth variability increases.

An Estimated New-Keynesian Model with Unemployment as Excess Supply of Labor
2010Co-Authors: Miguel Casares Polo, Antonio Moreno Ibáñez, Jesús VázquezAbstract:As one alternative to search frictions, wage stickiness is introduced in a New-Keynesian model to generate endogenous unemployment fluctuations due to mismatches between labor Supply and labor demand. The effects on an estimated New-Keynesian model for the U.S. economy are: i) the Calvo-type probability on wage stickiness rises, ii) the labor Supply elasticity falls, iii) the implied second-moment statistics of the unemployment rate provide a reasonable match with those observed in the data, and iv) wage-push shocks, demand shifts and monetary policy shocks are the three major determinants of unemployment fluctuations.

implications for minimum wage policies of an s shaped labor Supply curve
Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, 2004Co-Authors: Maryke DessingAbstract:Abstract A model of family labor Supply provides a rationale for raising minimum wages when the labor–Supply response is negative at low wages. Under those circumstances, the labor market can be caught in a Malthusian poverty trap of Excess Supply (unemployment, overextended workdays, child labor) and falling wages. Raising minimum wages may therefore help resorb this Excess Supply and stabilize the labor market, setting a “virtuous” cycle in motion. In a two-sector context, such a policy would increase wages in both the covered and uncovered sectors. Evidence from a study of Costa Rica, in particular, is consistent with those conclusions.
