New Structures for Exhibition Buildings

It is a centre for entertainment for the public and for delivery of new cars to new customers. The whole building is a 90 by 180m wide cloud-like roof covering a big open space that serves as a kind of market place. The roof is a complex steel structure resting on the interior Buildings used as restaurants and conference facilities. A significant steel tower shaped like a double-cone is also used as a support for the roof. This paper describes the difficulties and the solutions the planners had to face during planning and construction. The design of the building was developed during an architectural competition by the Vienna based architects COOP Himmelb(l)au Wolf Prix, Dieter Dreibholz and Partner accompanied by the Frankfurt based structural engineers Bollinger and Grohmann. The objective of the project is to achieve a more effective organization of urban transport, resulting in a more rational use of motorized traffic with less congestion and pollution, safer driving, a higher quality of living, and enhanced integration with spatial development. Subproject 1 of CityMobil focuses on demonstration activities with the objective of demonstrating the feasibility of innovative and advanced urban transport solutions and to evaluate the systems according to their impact. Three large-scale demonstrations were carried out. At Heathrow Airport in London, a personal rapid transit system connects the car park to the new terminal building. In Rome, cybercars collect visitors from the car park and bring them to the entrance of the city's new Exhibition Buildings. Reconstructing Landscape: Archaeological Investigations of the Royal Exhibition Buildings Western Forecourt, Melbourne
International Journal of Historical Archaeology, 2018Co-Authors: Janine Major, Charlotte Smith, Richard MackayAbstract:The western forecourt of the Royal Exhibition Buildings, Carlton, was one of the main components of its “palace garden setting.” After several phases of landscape change, in the 1950s the area was covered with asphalt and used as a car park. In 2004, the “Royal Exhibition Buildings and Carlton Gardens” was inscribed on the World Heritage List and subsequent management and conservation plans provided the stimulus for the conservation and re-interpretation of the western forecourt. The custodians of the site, Museum Victoria, commissioned an archaeological excavation with the aim of uncovering information that would inform the reconstruction of the former 1880s “German Garden.” Godden Mackay Logan (now GML Heritage), in collaboration with La Trobe University, undertook these investigations which became part of a public engagement program, employed new approaches to artifact management and provided significant information regarding changes to the landscape over time.
