  • stability of rigid body rotation from a bond graph perspective
Simulation Modelling Practice and Theory, 2009
    Co-Authors: Peter C Breedveld
    Abstract:

This paper describes the history of the bond graph description of rigid body rotation dynamics and resolves a paradox that resulted from the common Euler Junction Structure (EJS) description of the Exterior Product in the Newton–Euler equation describing rigid body rotation [D.C. Karnopp, R.C. Rosenberg, Analysis and Simulation of Multiport Systems – The Bond Graph Approach to Physical Systems Dynamics, MIT Press, Boston, 1968; D.C. Karnopp, The energetic structure of multibody dynamic systems, J. Franklin Inst. 306 (2) (1978) 165–181]. The proposed alternative representation that resolves this paradox allows direct insight into the stability of rotations around the principal axes of a rigid body. It eliminates the bond loop and it is shown to be a canonical decomposition of the corresponding nonlinear 3-port gyrator, whereas the EJS is not canonical. The consequences of these differences are demonstrated, in particular the increased expressive power of this notation, which is particularly important in education.

  • Exterior dissipation, proportional decay, and integrals of motion
    'American Physical Society (APS)', 2021
    Co-Authors: Aureli M., Hanna J. A.
    Abstract:

Given a dynamical system with $m$ independent conserved quantities, we construct a multi-parameter family of new systems in which these quantities evolve monotonically and proportionally, and are replaced by $m-1$ conserved linear combinations of themselves, with any of the original quantities as limiting cases. The modification of the dynamics employs an Exterior Product of gradients of the original quantities, and often evolves the system towards asymptotic linear dependence of these gradients in a nontrivial state. The process both generalizes and provides additional structure to existing techniques for selective dissipation in the literature on fluids and plasmas, nonequilibrium thermodynamics, and nonlinear controls. It may be iterated or adapted to obtain any reduction in the degree of integrability. It may enable discovery of extremal states, limit cycles, or solitons, and the construction of new integrable systems from superintegrable systems. We briefly illustrate the approach by its application to the cyclic three-body Toda lattice, driven from an aperiodic orbit towards a limit cycle.Comment: minor change

    Abstract:

Objective: To identify what challenges the appearance of the Covid 19 pandemic has on organizational culture and the how work is performed in a manufacturing sector company. Framework of conceptual references: the concepts around which the references revolve are: Organizational Culture, work organization, Pandemic Covid 19. Method: The work is a qualitative, descriptive and cross-sectional study. The design was made with a case study based on semi-structured interviews with 10 employees of a manufacturing sector company who have been with the company for more than 2 years. Employees were either in the administration team or administrative roles of the operational team. The results were organized into four large blocks that highlight the sociodemographic data of the participants. The data related to each of the sociodemographic categories was further assessed as changes in the way the work was being performed as a result of the onset of the pandemic, or alternatively the effect of the formal or expressive elements and the core aspects of the organizational culture. Conclusions: According to the results obtained and their respective discussion analysis, it can be said that the main challenges for the company were driven by essential changes in the way work is performed. This is primarily as a result of the implementation of strategies focused on Biosafety for protection health of employees, all of these have an impact on finances and human resources. Additionally, most of the participants refer to changes such as the reduction of employees in the Production plant as a result of the decrease in sales, the redesign of some procedures and work methodologies, the increase in workloads for some areas, the relationships to the interior and Exterior Product of, among other reasons, physical distancing and remote work. All those changes, as indicated by the participants, have been mainly leveraged by the participation of management in decisions and through the flow of resources to face the situation, as well as the ability of the organization itself to easily adapt to changing situations in the environment. Finally, it was concluded that the organizational culture was affected more in regard to formal or expressive elements than to core elements, leaving values as that aspect that only few subjects perceived as changing. Whilst changes in technology, work attire, the aesthetics and distribution of spaces were noted, the characteristics, of communicational style and rituals stood out as the most influential

  • robust irregular region matching based on inner Product and Exterior Product
International Conference on Information and Automation, 2010
    Co-Authors: Hongmin Liu, Zhiheng Wang
    Abstract:

A great deal of descriptors for region matching have been proposed in last years. However, an extra step, fitting the irregular regions into fixed shapes, must be implemented in advance when constructing these descriptors on irregular regions. This fitting step can cause great errors, and thus will result in poor matching. Base on inner Product and Exterior Product, this paper develops a method for constructing descriptors on irregular regions without any extra fitting steps. Experimental results prove that descriptors proposed in this paper can perform great and robust for irregular region matching.
