SICE - The Relationships Between Middle-Range Topology and Weights on Face-To-Face Communication Networks

The primary interest of the analysis is the relationship between topology and weights. For instance, scaling-law between degree and strength have been widely observed. However, the relationship between middle range topology and weights has not been explicitly investigated because conventional analysis was biased toward global or local range topology. In this study, we clarify the relationship between middle range topology and weights in a social network that is a Face-To-Face Communication network in a corporate organization. As results, we found that the specific trend of the relationship appears in the range of two degrees of separation. This indicates the middle ranges of a weighted network have a non-trivial trend that cannot be derived from local or global ranges, and the trend also depends on the number of steps in the middle ranges. In addition, the approach of this study is expected to be useful for detecting features unique to the middle ranges of weighted social networks.

The Relationship Between Head Motion Synchronization and Empathy in Unidirectional Face-To-Face Communication

However, the quantitative relationship between body motion synchronization and degree of empathy is not fully understood. Therefore, we focused on head motion to investigate phase and frequency differences in head motion synchronization in relation to degree of empathy. We specifically conducted a lecture-based experiment using controlled spoken text divided into two parts: high empathy and low empathy. During the lecture, we measured the acceleration of speakers’ and listeners’ head motions using an accelerometer, and calculated the synchronization between the time-series data from their acceleration norms. The results showed greater head motion synchronization during high empathy. During high empathy, the speakers’ head motions began before those of listeners’ in the medium (2.5 Hz to 3.5 Hz) and high (4.0 Hz to 5.0 Hz) frequency ranges, whereas the speakers’ head motions tended to start later than those of the listeners’ in the low (1.0 Hz to 2.0 Hz) and medium (2.5 Hz to 3.5 Hz) frequency ranges. This suggests that the degree of empathy is reflected by a different relationship between the phase and frequency of head motion synchronization during Face-To-Face Communication.

Interpersonal Similarity between Body Movements in Face-To-Face Communication in Daily Life

Because smooth Face-To-Face Communication is the key to maintaining these networks, measuring the smoothness of such Communication is an important issue. One indicator of smoothness is the similarity of the body movements of the two individuals concerned. A typical example noted in experimental environments is the interpersonal synchronization of body movements such as nods and gestures during smooth Face-To-Face Communication. It should therefore be possible to estimate quantitatively the smoothness of Face-To-Face Communication in social networks through measurement of the synchronization of body movements. However, this is difficult because social networks, which differ from disciplined experimental environments, are open environments for the Face-To-Face Communication between two individuals. In such open environments, their body movements become complicated by various external factors and may follow unstable and nonuniform patterns. Nevertheless, we consider there to be some interaction during Face-To-Face Communication that leads to the interpersonal synchronization of body movements, which can be seen through the interpersonal similarity of body movements. The present study aims to clarify such interaction in terms of body movements during daily Face-To-Face Communication in real organizations of more than 100 people. We analyzed data on the frequency of body movement for each individual during Face-To-Face Communication, as measured by a wearable sensor, and evaluated the degree of interpersonal similarity of body movements between two individuals as their frequency difference. Furthermore, we generated uncorrelated data by resampling the data gathered and compared these two data sets statistically to distinguish the effects of actual Face-To-Face Communication from those of the activities accompanying the Communication. Our results confirm an interpersonal similarity of body movements between two individuals in Face-To-Face Communication, for all the organizations studied, and suggest that some body interaction is behind this similarity.

We use the method to analyze communities in actual six organizations. In this study, the network of each organization is divided into several communities from two different viewpoints. The first viewpoint is based on real department information, and the second one is based on the weight of Face-To-Face Communication. We further compare the smoothness of Face-To-Face Communication in the same community to that between different communities based on the degree of synchronization of the body movements of two persons. We find out that the community division from the first viewpoint is different from that from the second one in terms of the smoothness of Face-To-Face Communication in a community and between communities. This indicates that good community division in service networks to enhance the quality of service could be obtained based on the smoothness of Face-To-Face Communication.

Interpersonal entrainment of body sway in everyday Face-To-Face Communication

Interpersonal entrainment has been observed under experimental conditions, but not in daily life. We used wearable sensors to measure individual body vibration and Face-To-Face interactions in daily life. The observation included at least 100 participants from each of seen organization over a period of two to three months. We carried out measurements over a period of two to three months for each organization. It was found that the body vibration frequencies of two participants become more closer in Face-To-Face situations than in non-Face-To-Face situations. This result suggests that interpersonal entrainment of body sway occurs in everyday Face-To-Face Communication.

The body that speaks: Recombining bodies and speech sources in unscripted Face-To-Face Communication
Frontiers in Psychology, 2016Co-Authors: Alex Gillespie, Kevin CortiAbstract:This article examines advances in research methods that enable experimental substitution of the speaking body in unscripted Face-To-Face Communication. A taxonomy of six hybrid social agents is presented by combining three types of bodies (mechanical, virtual, and human) with either an artificial or human speech source. Our contribution is to introduce and explore the significance of two particular hybrids: (1) the cyranoid method that enables humans to converse Face-To-Face through the medium of another person's body, and (2) the echoborg method that enables artificial intelligence to converse Face-To-Face through the medium of a human body. These two methods are distinct in being able to parse the unique influence of the human body when combined with various speech sources. We also introduce a new framework for conceptualizing the body's role in Communication, distinguishing three levels: self's perspective on the body, other's perspective on the body, and self's perspective of other's perspective on the body. Within each level the cyranoid and echoborg methodologies make important research questions tractable. By conceptualizing and synthesizing these methods, we outline a novel paradigm of research on the role of the body in unscripted Face-To-Face Communication.

Speech and Face-To-Face Communication - An introduction

Research works have demonstrated that this communicative situation is essential to language acquisition and development (e.g. naming). Face-To-Face Communication is in fact much more than speaking and speech is greatly influenced both in substance and content by this essential form of Communication. Face-To-Face Communication is multimodal: interacting involves multimodality and nonverbal Communication to a large extent. Speakers not only hear but also see each other producing sounds as well as facial and more generally body gestures. Gaze together with speech contribute to maintain mutual attention and to regulate turn-taking for example. Moreover, speech Communication involves not only linguistic but also psychological, affective and social aspects of interaction. Face-To-Face Communication is situated: the true challenge of spoken Communication is to take into account and integrate information not only from the speakers but also from the entire physical environment in which the interaction takes place. The communicative setting, the ''task'' in which the interlocutors are involved, their respective roles and the environmental conditions of the conversation indeed greatly influence how the spoken interaction unfolds. The present issue aims at synthesizing the most recent developments in this topic considering its various aspects from complementary perspectives: cognitive and neurocognitive (multisensory and perceptuo-motor interactions), linguistic (dialogic face to face interactions), paralinguistic (emotions and affects, turn-taking, mutual attention), computational (animated conversational agents, multimodal interacting Communication systems).

However, remote workers are likely to feel anxious about the decline in their trust with colleagues and the loss of opportunities to obtain important information. Employee well-being is an important management issue as it relates to the productivity and growth potential of an organization. The purpose of this study is to identify the features of Communication in the workplace that are important for maintaining the well-being of employees. We aim to determine behaviors that employees should prioritize in their respective situations of remote work and office work. As a research approach, real-time Face-To-Face Communication data detected by a wearable sensor is used. The data was classified as Communication characteristics of total time, variety, frequency, and interactivity. We analyzed this Face-To-Face, real-time Communication data in relation to Psychological Capital (PsyCap), a positive multi-dimensional construct derived by Fred Luthans consisting of hope, efficacy, resilience and optimism or the HERO within. There is a growing body of published research which has clearly demonstrated PsyCap is related to and causes employee improved performance and well-being. A experiment found that employees with high PsyCap tend to talk with diverse persons for a relatively short period of time in the workplace and also have a relatively long time of interactive dialogue. It turned out that these elements of Face-To-Face Communication are related to the credibility to oneself and their team. In particular, taking a PsyCap perspective and approach when communicating (i.e., internally and exhibiting externally) with colleagues and team-mates should promote not only improved Communication but also well-being.

Visualization of knowledge-creation process using Face-To-Face Communication data

The knowledge-creation theory by Nonaka has successfully generalized a knowledge-creation process in an organization. However, nobody has found a quantitative method for evaluating the process. This paper proposes a technique of visualizing the knowledge-creation process by plotting graphs of Face-To-Face contact time and number of people contacted. We applied the data of Face-To-Face Communication of an organization to our proposed technique and confirmed that it represented dynamics of the knowledge-creation process. This technique will provide a new method of corporate management.
