  • the 9 11 attacks a study of al qaeda s use of intelligence and counterintelligence
Studies in Conflict & Terrorism, 2009
    Co-Authors: Gaetano Joe Ilardi
    Abstract:

The 9/11 attacks on New York and Washington, D.C. were undoubtedly the most brazen and shocking terrorist attacks conducted by a sub-state group in history. Al Qaeda's capacity to achieve this outcome depended in large part on its meticulous intelligence and counterintelligence preparations. These activities allowed Al Qaeda to exert a strong measure of control over its operating environment, leading to a confidence that events would unfold as planned. Moreover, intelligence and counterintelligence allowed Al Qaeda to form highly accurate and realistic assessments of its environment, an outcome that helps to dispel notions of an organization consumed by a level of Fanaticism that distorts its perception of reality, or else frustrates its capacity to engage in rational decision making.

  • al qaeda s operational intelligence a key prerequisite to action
Studies in Conflict & Terrorism, 2008
    Co-Authors: Gaetano Joe Ilardi
    Abstract:

For Al Qaeda, intelligence is a critical operational resource. Its vigorous collection, scrutiny, and dissemination within the organization have proven fundamental to its capacity to engage in carefully crafted acts of terrorism. In addition to its operational utility, intelligence fulfills a range of other functions, including an ability to contribute to Al Qaeda's symbolic goals and elevate the confidence of operatives and leadership alike. Ultimately, however, Al Qaeda's collection and use of detailed intelligence reveals a capacity to calculate the consequences of alternative courses of action, thereby helping to dispel notions of an irrationality or Fanaticism in which decision making is somehow removed from reality.

  • In Defense of Fanaticism
    2022
    Co-Authors: Wilkinson Hayden
    Abstract:

Which is better: a guarantee of a modest amount of moral value, or a tiny probability of arbitrarily large value? To prefer the latter seems fanatical. But, as I argue, avoiding such Fanaticism brings severe problems. To do so, we must decline intuitively attractive trade-offs; rank structurally identical pairs of lotteries inconsistently, or else admit absurd sensitivity to tiny probability differences; have rankings depend on remote, unaffected events ; and often neglect to rank lotteries as we already know we would if we learned more. Compared to these implications, Fanaticism is highly plausible

  • us colonial governance of superstition and Fanaticism in the philippines
Method & Theory in The Study of Religion, 2018
    Co-Authors: Jeffrey Wheatley
    Abstract:

This article examines how US colonial officials understood and utilized the categories of superstition, Fanaticism, and religion during the occupation of the Philippines in the early twentieth century. I adapt Jason Josephson-Storm’s model of the trinary to explore the colonial politics of these categories. I focus on ideas about Filipino supernatural charms, typically referred to as anting anting . Civil administrators like ethnologist Dean Worcester and officers of the Philippine Constabulary blamed these charms for superstitious credulity and fanatical resistance against US rule. As such, beliefs, practices, and communities categorized as superstitious or fanatical were targeted strategically for reformation or elimination. I argue that ideas about superstition, religion, and Fanaticism were key parts of US war and policy, often serving racial projects of governance. Pursuing this line of inquiry allows scholars to see the material stakes of the category of religion and its proximate others.
