China Preventive Medicine, 2004Co-Authors: Miao FengAbstract:Objective To investigate the influence of Fasciolopsiasis epidemic caused by ecological environment changes in weishan lake area after the South-to-North water diversion project of China was constructed Methods Epidemiological survey was performed on the natural environment,changes of water area and the infection of fasciolopsis buski in aquatic in Weishan country,heath situation of the residents was also investigated and the fresh stools from residents of lake areas were examined by improved kato kata methods Result The expansion of water area and control of water contamination after the South-to-North water diversion project was constructed is suitable for the propagation and spreading of the middle host of aquatic,but no fasciolopsis buski was found in the aquatic and pigs Knowledge of Fasciolopsiasis prevention and cure was short in the presendents and the infection rate of fasciolopsis buski was 0 06% Conclusion Changes of the ecological environment in Weishan lake area and the unhealthy life style of the presidents may lead to the epidemic and spreading of Fasciolopsiasis,but widely propagation of Fasciolopsiasis prevention and cure knowledge and some according methods can prevent the epidemic of Fasciolopsiasis in hte lake area

Praziquantel Treatment in Trematode and Cestode Infections: An Update
Infection and Chemotherapy, 2013Co-Authors: Jong-yil ChaiAbstract:Status and emerging issues in the use of praziquantel for treatment of human trematode and cestode infections are briefly reviewed. Since praziquantel was first introduced as a broadspectrum anthelmintic in 1975, innumerable articles describing its successful use in the treatment of the majority of human-infecting trematodes and cestodes have been published. The target trematode and cestode diseases include schistosomiasis, clonorchiasis and opisthorchiasis, paragonimiasis, heterophyidiasis, echinostomiasis, Fasciolopsiasis, neodiplostomiasis, gymnophalloidiasis, taeniases, diphyllobothriasis, hymenolepiasis, and cysticercosis. However, Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica infections are refractory to praziquantel, for which triclabendazole, an alternative drug, is necessary. In addition, larval cestode infections, particularly hydatid disease and sparganosis, are not successfully treated by praziquantel. The precise mechanism of action of praziquantel is still poorly understood. There are also emerging problems with praziquantel treatment, which include the appearance of drug resistance in the treatment of Schistosoma mansoni and possibly Schistosoma japonicum, along with allergic or hypersensitivity reactions against praziquantel treatment. To cope with and overcome these problems, combined use of drugs, i.e., praziquantel and other newly introduced compounds such as triclabendazole, artemisinins, and tribendimidine, is being tried.

Fasciolopsiasis is a trematode worm disease of Fasciolopsis buski’s species, which is only endemic in some areas in Hulu Sungai Utara, South Kalimantan. Buski life cycle requires an intermediate host such as snails and plants that live in the aquatic environment. Fasciolopsiasis endemic areas in HSU is a marshy area, however not all regions that have the same characteristics or directly adjacent to an endemic area Fasciolopsiasis. This research is a descriptive, aims to describe the aquatic environment through the parameters of temperature, acidity (pH), salinity, the value of Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), which supports buski’s habitation in endemic areas. Cross-sectional study design, and implemented in the village of Kalumpang Dalam, Sungai Papuyu, and Telaga Mas, in the month of June to September 2012. The results showed swamp water environment in the research site with a surface water temperature of 25oC, pH 6, salinity 0‰, DO value between 3,49-88,7 mg O2/L, BOD value between 0,05-3,64 mg O2/L, and COD values between 3,016- 39,51 mg O2/L, which indicate the presence of marshy water pollution and still found life freshwater snails as an intermediate host of F.buski : Lymnaea and Indoplanorbis Keywords : Fasciolopsis buski, Fasciolopsiasis, swamp water, intermediate host, HSU Abstrak. Fasciolopsiasis adalah penyakit cacing trematoda dari spesies Fasciolopsis buski, yang hanya endemis di sebagian wilayah di Kabupaten Hulu Sungai Utara Provinsi Kalimantan Selatan. Siklus hidup buski memerlukan hospes perantara berupa keong dan tumbuhan yang hidup di lingkungan air. Wilayah endemis Fasciolopsiasis di Kab. HSU merupakan wilayah berawa, namun demikian tidak semua wilayah yang mempunyai karakteristik sama ataupun berbatasan langsung merupakan daerah endemis Fasciolopsiasis.Penelitian ini bersifat deskriptif, bertujuan untuk mengetahui gambaran lingkungan air melalui parameter suhu, derajat keasaman (pH), salinitas, nilai Dissolved Oxygen (DO), nilai Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), dan nilai Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) yang mendukung habitat buski di wilayah endemis. Desain penelitian secara cross sectional, dan dilaksanakan di Desa Kalumpang Dalam, Desa Sungai Papuyu, dan Desa Telaga Mas, pada bulan Juni-September 2012. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan lingkungan air rawa di lokasi penelitian dengan suhu air permukaan 25oC, pH air 6, dan salinitas 0‰, nilai DO antara 3,49-88,7 mg O2/L, nilai BOD antara 0,05-3,64 mg O2/L, nilai COD antara 3,016-39,51 mg O2/L, yang menunjukkan adanya pencemaran air rawa dan masih ditemukan kehidupan keong air tawar sebagai hospes perantara pada F.buski yaitu keong jenis Lymnaea dan Indoplanorbis. Fasciolopsiasis is intestinal disease caused by consuming contaminated water plant by metacercaria of Fasciolopsis buski. Many Fasciolopsiasis patients are children because their knowledge and their awareness of health remains low. This study aims to know characteristics and behaviour in family sufferer's family. This study was conducted from March to December 2012 with cross sectional study design. Examination of stool samples to determine infection F. buski using centrifugation method (Formalin Ether Technique). The results showed Fasciolopsiasis patients mostly found in Sungai Papuyu Village as many as 9 people, sex most patients are women and the most age range between 6-12 year old. Based on the results of interview known family knowledge is still low, defecate habit directly into the swamp and have not been taking anthelmintic. Fasciolopsiasis adalah penyakit kecacingan usus akibat mengkonsumsi tanaman air yang terkontaminasi metaserkaria dari Fasciolopsis buski. Kebanyakan penderita Fasciolopsiasis adalah anak-anak karena pengetahuan dan kesadaran mereka akan kesehatan masih rendah. Studi ini bertujuan untuk melihat karakteristik dan perilaku keluarga penderita Fasciolopsiasis. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada bulan Maret hingga Desember 2012 dengan rancangan penelitian cross sectional. Pemeriksaan sampel tinja untuk mengetahui infeksi cacing F. buski dengan menggunakan centrifugation method (Formalin Ether Technique). Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan penderita Fasciolopsiasis terbanyak ditemukan di Desa Sungai Papuyu yaitu sebanyak 9 orang, perempuan dan dengan kisaran umur antara usia 6-12 tahun. Berdasarkan hasil wawancara diketahui pengetahuan keluarga masih rendah, kebiasaan BAB langsung ke air rawa dan belum pernah mengkonsumsi obat cacing. Fascioliasis and Fasciolopsiasis: Current knowledge and future trends.
Research in veterinary science, 2020Co-Authors: Mar Siles-lucas, David Becerro-recio, Judit Serrat, Javier González-miguelAbstract:Abstract Food-borne zoonotic trematodiases are classified as neglected diseases by the World Health Organization. Among them, fascioliasis is caused worldwide by Fasciola hepatica and F. gigantica, and represent a huge problem in livestock production and human health in endemic areas. Fasciolopsis buski, restricted to specific regions of Asia, causes Fasciolopsiasis. The incidence of these trematodiases is underestimated due to under-reporting and to the lack of sensitive and widely accepted tool for their diagnosis. This, together with a rising trend in reporting of drug resistance and the need for an effective vaccine against these parasites, pose a challenge in the effective control of these diseases. Here, the latest reports on fascioliasis outbreaks between 2000 and 2020 and the most recent advances in their epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment and control are revised. Finally, future needs in the field of fascioliasis and Fasciolopsiasis are presented, which could be addressed based on current knowledge and by means of new emerging technologies.

Fasciolopsiasis: is it a controllable food-borne disease?

Gilman, Bernard FriedAbstract:Fasciolopsiasis, endemic to the Orient and Southeast Asia, is a snail-transmitted, intestinal, food-borne parasitic zoonosis caused by a trematode, Fasciolopsis buski , which also infects farm pigs. Fasciolopsiasis remains a public health problem despite changes in eating habits, alterations in social and agricultural practices, health education, industrialization, and environmental alterations. The disease occurs focally and is most prevalent in school-age children. In foci of parasite transmission, the prevalence of infection in children ranges from 57% in mainland China to 25% in Taiwan and from 50% in Bangladesh and 60% in India to 10% in Thailand. Control programs implemented for food-borne zoonoses are not fully successful for Fasciolopsiasis because of century-old traditions of eating raw aquatic plants and using untreated water. Fasciolopsiasis is aggravated by social and economic factors such as poverty, malnutrition, an explosively growing free-food market, a lack of sufficient food inspection and sanitation, other helminthiases, and declining economic conditions.
