THE LEVEL OF Reserve PROTEIN AS THE PROXIMATE FACTOR CONTROLLING THE TIMING OF BREEDING AND CLUTCH-SIZE IN THE RED-BILLED QUELEA QUELEA QUELEA
Ibis, 2008Co-Authors: P. J. Jones, P. WardAbstract:SUMMARY Changes in the Fat and flight muscle protein Reserves of adult Red-billed Queleas Quelea quelea were followed in two colonies in Tanzania and Botswana. At the start of a breeding attempt the protein Reserves were higher that at any other time of the year, particularly in females which had heavier flight muscles (non-Fat dry weight) than did the (larger) males at that time. The pre-breeding increase in the labile component of the muscle protein (the actual protein Reserve) is calculated at 80% for females, but only 14% for males. The Fat Reserve was only increased slightly at the beginning of the breeding attempt. In both sexes, though for different reasons, the protein and Fat Reserves fell rapidly during the first few days of the attempt, in some individuals to dangerously low levels. During the incubation period there was rapid recovery while the situation during the rearing period appeared to vary between colonies. It is proposed that the proximate control of breeding is provided by the individual's own body condition, and particularly the state of its protein Reserves. No environmental releasers are required for the birds to breed at the appropriate time of the year. Individual females producing two, three and four egg clutches differed in the rate at which their Reserves fell during egg formation. The results are used to support the view that in this quelea the actual clutch-size produced on any occasion is the largest the female can produce before becoming too enfeebled. Thus, clutch-size appears to be determined phenotypically downward from a maximum which is indirectly under genetic control.

CORRELATED RESPONSE TO SELECTION FOR LITTER SIZE RESIDUAL VARIANCE IN RABBITS
'Universitat Politecnica de Valencia', 2018Co-Authors: Calle Ayma, Eddy WilfredoAbstract:Tesis por compendioThe thesis is composed for four articles, where is studied either as relationships between body condition and energetic mobilization in rabbits and as the effect of selection for litter size variability in body condition and energetic mobilization, such as welfare biomarkers, and in litter size and its components after seven generation of selection. The first article examines the relationships between measures of body condition and energetic mobilization on primiparous rabbit at mating, delivery and 10 d after delivery, using principal component analysis. Body condition was measured as body weight and perirenal Fat thickness. Energetic mobilization was measured as non-esterified Fatty acid concentration in blood, before (NEFAb) and after lipolysis stimulation by isoproterenol (NEFAr). All body weights and perirenal Fat thickness were located on the first principal component, exhibiting high correlations between them both at the same or different times (from 0.51 to 0.83). All NEFA measurements were located on the second component, showing low correlations with body condition measurements. Both NEFAs showed high positive correlations when measured at the same time (0.65 at mating, 0.72 at delivery and 0.69 at 10 d after delivery), but low correlations when measured at different times (from 0.09 to 0.20). The second article analyses the correlated response in body condition and Fat Reserves mobilization. The perirenal Fat thickness and the increase in NEFAs from basal until adrenergic stimulation by isoproterenol were measured at second mating, at delivery and at 10 d after delivery. Perirenal Fat thickness was similar in both lines at mating. However, the high line showed lower Fat thickness than the low line at delivery (-0.16 mm, P=0.86), and this difference remained at 10 d after delivery (-0.17 mm, P=0.86). Moreover, this line exhibited 30% more concentration in NEFAs at delivery than the low one (P=0.96). The third and fourth articles study the correlated responses to selection in litter size and its components. A laparoscopy was performed 12 d of the second gestation, in order to estimate ovulation rate and number of implanted embryos. The litter size was recorded at the second parity. In the last gestation, the embryonic development was analysed at 28, 48 and 72 hours of gestation. The ovulation rate was similar in both lines. The line selected to reduce variability in litter size showed a higher number of implanted embryos (1.23, P=1.00) than the high line. Also, this line showed a more advanced development of the embryos from 48 hours of gestation, exhibiting a lower percentage of early morulae both at 48 hours (53.32% vs 79.90%, P=0.93) and at 72 hours (3.88% Vs. 21.04%, P=0.93). More advanced embryo development is related to higher embryo survival (0.85 vs 0.78, P=1.00). A higher uterine overcrowding of embryos in the low line did not penalise fetal survival, and as a result, this line continued showing a greater number of kits born at birth (0.98, P=0.96). In conclusion, body weight and perirenal Fat thickness are good predictors of body Reserves and both measurements could be used to estimate energy changes in the mid-long term, while NEFA measurements should be used in the short term. A decrease in litter size variability has a favourable effect on body condition, Fat Reserve mobilization, embryonic development and survival, and litter size. Energetic costs of tail autotomy and regeneration in reptiles
2019Co-Authors: Píchová VeronikaAbstract:Most reptile species have the ability to voluntarily cast off their tail, known as autotomy, followed by tail regeneration, which is used as an antipredatory mechanism. In spite of this being a successful ecological adaptation, the individual with its tail cast off is often influenced negatively, which includes increased probability of predation, lower locomotion capabilities, lower immunity or a change in its social standing. Last but not least, casting off the tail and the following regeneration may distinctively influence the energy of the individual, either directly through the loss of Fat Reserve, usually located in the tail itself, or because the regeneration of lost tissue demands a lot of energy and often requires relocation of energy at the expense of other processes. Autotomy and regeneration of the tail may thus influence important traits of physiological processes such as body growth or body mass, reproductive capabilities or metabolism intensity. The influence of autotomy on these aspects of an individual's life has been a studies topic in the last few years, but conclusions vary. The goal of this thesis is a brief summary of information about the mechanism of caudal autotomy and regeneration and also summarize contemporary knowledge about energy costs connected to autotomy and..

Energetic costs of tail autotomy and regeneration in reptiles
Cílem této práce je stručně shrnout informace o mechanismu kaudální autotomie a regenerace a dále shrnout současné poznatky o energetických nákladech spojených s autotomií a regenerací ocasu. Most reptile species have the ability to voluntarily cast off their tail, known as autotomy, followed by tail regeneration, which is used as an antipredatory mechanism. The influence of autotomy on these aspects of an individual's life has been a studies topic in the last few years, but conclusions vary. The goal of this thesis is a brief summary of information about the mechanism of caudal autotomy and regeneration and also summarize contemporary knowledge about energy costs connected to autotomy and...Department of ZoologyKatedra zoologiePřírodovědecká fakultaFaculty of Scienc

Revisiting the functional response in habitat selection for large herbivores: a matter of spatial variation in resource distribution?
'Oxford University Press (OUP)', 2019Co-Authors: Duparc Antoine, Garel Mathieu, Marchand Pascal, Dubray Dominique, Maillard Daniel, Loison AnneAbstract:International audienceMost habitats are distributed heterogeneously in space, forcing animals to move according to both habitat characteristics and their needs for energy and safety. Animal space use should therefore vary according to habitat characteristics, a process known as the "functional response" in habitat selection. This response has often been tested vis-à-vis the proportion of a habitat category within areas available to individuals. Measuring sought-after resources in landscape where they are continuously distributed is a challenge and we posit here that both the mean availability of a resource and its spatial variation should be measured. Accordingly, we tested for a functional response in habitat selection according to these two descriptors of the resource available for a mountain herbivore. We hypothesized that selection should decrease with mean value of resources available and increase with its spatial variation. Based on GPS data from 50 chamois females and data on the actual foodscape (i.e., distribution of edible-only biomass in the landscape), we estimated individual selection ratio (during summer months) for biomass at the home range level, comparing edible biomass in individual home ranges and the mean and standard deviation of edible biomass in their available range. Chamois being a group-living species, available accessible ranges were shared by several individuals that formed socio-spatial groups (clusters) in the population. As expected, selection ratios increased with the standard deviation of edible resources in each cluster, but unlike our prediction, was unrelated to its mean. Selection of areas richer in resources hence did not fade away when more resources were available on average, a result that may be explained by the need for this capital breeder species to accumulate Fat-Reserve at a high rate during summer months. Low spatial variation could limit the selection of chamois, which highlights the importance of resource distribution in the process of habitat selection
