Physical and chemical analysis of lithium-ion battery cell-to-cell failure events inside custom Fire Chamber
Journal of Power Sources, 2015Co-Authors: Neil S. Spinner, Kristina M Myers, Adam L. Lubrano, Bradley A. Williams, Mark H. Hammond, Susan L. Rose-pehrsson, Christopher R Field, Steven G. TuttleAbstract:Abstract A 5-cubic meter decompression Chamber was re-purposed as a Fire test Chamber to conduct failure and abuse experiments on lithium-ion batteries. Various modifications were performed to enable remote control and monitoring of Chamber functions, along with collection of data from instrumentation during tests including high speed and infrared cameras, a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, real-time gas analyzers, and compact reconfigurable input and output devices. Single- and multi-cell packages of LiCoO 2 chemistry 18650 lithium-ion batteries were constructed and data was obtained and analyzed for abuse and failure tests. Surrogate 18650 cells were designed and fabricated for multi-cell packages that mimicked the thermal behavior of real cells without using any active components, enabling internal temperature monitoring of cells adjacent to the active cell undergoing failure. Heat propagation and video recordings before, during, and after energetic failure events revealed a high degree of heterogeneity; some batteries exhibited short burst of sparks while others experienced a longer, sustained flame during failure. Carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, dimethyl carbonate, and ethylene carbonate were detected via gas analysis, and the presence of these species was consistent throughout all failure events. These results highlight the inherent danger in large format lithium-ion battery packs with regards to cell-to-cell failure, and illustrate the need for effective safety features.

development of technical solutions on a coal Fired boiler for a power plant unit of 800 mw with steam parameters of 35 mpa and 700 720 c
Thermal Engineering, 2015Co-Authors: A. L. Shvarts, Kh E Verbovetsky, E V Somova, A V SmolinAbstract:Development of a coal-Fired boiler for a power plant unit of 800 MW with advanced ultra-supercritical steam parameters of 35 MPa and 700/720°C is presented. The main technical solutions providing the reliability, profitability, and low emissions of harmful substances in the atmosphere are given. The fuel is the black coal of (Taldinskoye field, Kuznetsk basin). The gross efficiency of the boiler is 94%. The U-shaped configuration of a boiler is chosen, which allows the reduction of the capital expenditure for steam turbine piping made of expensive nickel alloys. The horizontal connection flue of the boiler, where the primary and reheat steam screens are located, is equipped with two cold funnels. The upper section of the convection shaft is separated with a vertical screen wall into two parallel “split tail” flues, which allows one to control the reheat steam temperature by redistributing the flue gas between the gas flues. The URS screens are two-stage with a lifting motion of the medium and a partial bypassing of the first stage. The lower radiant section is two-stage. To reduce the temperature of screen walls at the Fire Chamber outlet, the lowering motion of the working medium and combustion gases is used. The hydrodynamics of the screens with the lowering motion of the medium for preventing the aperiodic instability in the start regimes is analyzed. Besides the stepwise combustion of coal dust providing the improved environmental parameters, the boiler plant is equipped with a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, an ash collector (an electric filter combined with a filter bag), and a desulphurization device.

Investigation of heat and mass transfer processes in the combustion chambe of industrial power plant boiler. Part 2. Distribution of concentrations of O2, CO, CO2, NO
University of West Bohemia, 2018Co-Authors: Askarova Aliya, Maximov Valeriy, Bolegenova Saltanat, Bolegenova Symbat, Yergaliyeva, Aigul Balatbekovna, Šafařík PavelAbstract:In the present paper, a study of furnace processes in the combustion Chamber of the real energy boiler BKZ-160 of Almaty TPP-3 (Kazakhstan) using three-dimensional modeling methods has been carried out. Calculations of the combustion Chamber for flame combustion of pulverized coal have been performed. The main purpose of this paper was to study the effect of fractional fuel composition on the concentration characteristics of the combustion process. Numerical simulation was carried out with two models of coal particle size distribution: monodisperse fuel flame (coal particle size identical and equal to 60 μm) and a polydisperse fuel flame (coal particle diameter varies from 10 to 120 μm). The polydisperse distribution corresponds to the fractional distribution (percentage of total coal particles) calculated for this boiler: the first fraction - 10% with dp=10 μm; 20% with dp=30 μm; 40% with dp=60 μm; 20% with dp=100 μm; 10% with dp=120 μm.The numerical simulation results of the influence of the pulverized coal particle size composition on concentration characteristics of combustion process are presented. The distributions of oxidizer (oxygen) and combustion products (NO, CO, CO2) are shown. Areas with the greatest concentration of gas products of burning are determined, regularities of formation of products and their concentration at the exit of Fire Chamber are also determined. The effect of fractional fuel composition on the obtained characteristics is sufficiently large, the empirical data obtained directly at TPP-3 show better convergence with the result of the computational experiment that confirms simultaneously the adequacy of the used physical and mathematical statement of the problem, as well as the validity of using the model of polyfractional distribution
