    West Virginia University recognizes that a vital component of Information Security is training. The ultimate goal is to have every First-Year Student and institutional employee receive initial information security training as well as periodic refresher training for specific or new topics. The challenges in selecting and delivering an effective program to accomplish these measures soon became evident, and many changes were required. Content, delivery method, course requirements, and support were quickly recognized as obstacles. Pilot training was completed and formal training began with the delivery of ISO standard Information Security training to Students. After one semester, the obstacles forced us to make the decision to develop our own course content. The information security director, a part-time assistant, one graduate Student, an instructional designer, and several members of the WVU iS3PACE (Information Security Services System Promoting Awareness Communication Education) information security collaborative contributed to the effort. The result? The new content was delivered to over 3,000 First-Year Students as a component of their First Year Experience courses titled "University 101" and "Adventure West Virginia." Additional content and narration were added during the Fall 2007 semester. Pilot training has started for institutional employees. This training has become a key component for driving the cultural changes required to integrate security standards and practices into daily habits. The trail to climbing the "Information Security Training Mountain" is steep and there are many obstacles to safely traverse it. Our "lessons learned" will assist you as you blaze your own trail up the Information Security Training Mountain.

  • A grounded theory study exploring first year Student nurses' learning in practice

    This professional doctorate thesis consists of a primary research grounded theory study exploring how first year Student nurses learn in practice on their first placement. The study is complemented by a mixed methodology practice development project (PDP) that examines the specific aspect of Student placement support using online communication methods. The thesis is interwoven by six personal narratives explaining both the reflexivity and reflectivity at key decision points. The aim of the primary research was to develop a theory of practice learning of first year Students on their first clinical placement. An initial literature review identified a lack of recent research on how Student nurses learn in practice settings. It revealed theories and research related to work based learning in other contexts that could be pertinent to Student nurses’ learning on their first placement. Twenty one first year Student nurses volunteered for the primary research study and were interviewed twice during their first placement (January – November 2013). Data collection and analysis used the constant comparative method and theoretical sampling of emerging categories. Participant interviews illuminated the organic and inconsistent nature of Students’ practice learning. The theory which emerged from the data showed that first year Student nurses were “learning to be a professional” from their first placement experience. Recognition and negotiation of practice learning in the highly politicised clinical setting was influenced by both the social context of the placement and the individual influence of the Student. The primary research recommended the need for a greater awareness of practice pedagogy and support systems for Students’ practice learning. The PDP found that online asynchronous groups could provide Students with peer and academic support A grounded theory study exploring first year Student nurses’ learning in practice 4 and included the dissemination of the project findings with recommendations for further implementation identified.

  • Supporting Student nurses in practice with additional online communication tools

    Student nurses’ potential isolation and difficulties of learning on placement have been well documented and, despite attempts to make placement learning more effective, evidence indicates the continuing schism between formal learning at university and situated learning on placement. First year Student nurses, entering placement for the first time, are particularly vulnerable to the vagaries of practice. During 2012 two first year Student nurse seminar groups (52 Students) were voluntarily recruited for a mixed method study to determine the usage of additional online communication support mechanisms (Facebook, wiki, an email group and traditional methods of support using individual email or phone) while undertaking their first five week clinical placement. The study explores the possibility of strengthening clinical learning and support by promoting the use of Web 2.0 support groups for Student nurses. Results indicate a high level of interactivity in both peer and academic support in the use of Facebook and a high level of interactivity in one wiki group. Students’ qualitative comments voice an appreciation of being able to access university and peer support whilst working individually on placement. Recommendations from the study challenge universities to use online communication tools already familiar to Students to complement the support mechanisms that exist for practice learning. This is tempered by recognition of the responsibility of academics to ensure their Students are aware of safe and effective online communication.

    AbstractResearch should be explicated in undergraduate teaching in a way that stimulates Student learning. Previous studies in higher education have shown that Student perceptions of research integrated into teaching could promote Student learning, but have also indicated that it can be difficult to confront First-Year undergraduates with research during courses. In this study, we describe relationships between First-Year medical Student perceptions of research, learning outcomes and beliefs about the value of research. The Student Perception of Research Integration Questionnaire was filled out by 261 Students. Answers were related to Student achievement. The findings suggest that Student motivation for research is strongly related to merging current research into teaching. Students rather recognised an emphasis on research methodologies than research engagement. Particularly Student beliefs about research are related to achievement.     Research integrated into undergraduate education is important in order for medical Students to understand and value research for later clinical practice. Therefore, attempts are being made to strengthen the integration of research into teaching from the first year onwards. First-Year Students may interpret attempts made to strengthen research integration differently than intended by teachers. This might be explained by Student beliefs about learning and research as well as Student perceptions of the learning environment. In general, Student perceptions of the learning environment play a pivotal role in fostering Student learning outcomes. This study aims to determine whether a curriculum change intended to promote research integration fosters Student learning outcomes and Student perceptions of research integrated into teaching. To serve this purpose, three subsequent cohorts of First-Year Students were compared, one before and two after a curriculum change. Learning outcomes of these Students were measured using scores on a national progress test of 921 Students and assessments of a sample of 100 research reports of a First-Year Student research project. 746 Students filled out the Student Perceptions of Research Integration Questionnaire. The findings suggest that learning outcomes of these Students, that is, scores on research related test items of the progress test and the quality of research reports, were better than those of Students before the curriculum change.
