Design of a reconfigurable research Flight Simulator
Journal of Harbin Engineering University, 2011Co-Authors: Han Jun-weiAbstract:Software and hardware of a research Flight Simulator,which is an important aeronautic experiment device,need to be reconfigured depending on the purpose of the experiment.To reduce the complexity and cost of the reconfiguration,common changes of the Flight Simulator were analyzed and a system design was given.The design of the software architecture for a reconfigurable Flight Simulator with object-oriented design principles was discussed,and mediator and facade patterns were adopted to make the system model clear and independent.A one-to-one distributed data acquisition system based on CAN bus and hierarchical division strategy was proposed in order to decouple the panels along with the data acquisition system.The research Flight Simulator from the Boeing 737 series was designed and shown.Application outcomes indicate that reuse of the software and hardware can save cost and time for changing the subsystem of a Flight Simulator.

Construction of navigation database for the systems of Flight Simulator prototype
Journal of Jilin University, 2010Co-Authors: Han Jun-weiAbstract:In order to investigate and develop advanced Flight Simulator with high fidelity and provide the Simulator with actual and reliable navigation data,the data structure requirements of navigation database for the system of Flight Simulator prototype are presented.These requirements including the airport,runway,very high frequency omni-directional radio range,instrument landing system,distance measuring equipment system,non-directional beacon and marker beacon.The complete and authentic navigation data of domestic civil aerodrome is obtained by integrating the navigation database of FlightGear and FS2004 with civil aerodrome navigation chart.The transfer function of navigation data structure is built.Based on Microsoft Visual Studio.NET,the structure transfer of navigation data is implemented;the practicable data file of navigation database for the system of Flight Simulator prototype is generated;complete and authentic navigation database with reasonable data structure for the system of advanced Flight Simulator prototype is constructed.The running results of the Simulator program indicate that the proposed method for exploiting navigation database is effective and feasible.

A low-cost PC-based Flight Simulator development

Because of the limitation by computer powers, only special computers ever were used to realize Flight dynamics simulation and image generation in full Flight Simulator in the past. With the development of computer powers, high-performance computation and simulation can be realized applying by PC. While the need to reduce costs in every aspects of Flight Simulator become very important. A PC-based prototype system was implemented according to the architecture of Flight Simulator featuring a generic double engine airplane. Commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) software components were use to reduce costs and improve developing efficiency. The detailed process was proposed. The integrated system shows that the feasibility of design based on PC.

Experiment and Study of Control Loading System in Flight Simulator
Computer Simulation, 2008Co-Authors: Han Jun-weiAbstract:Control loading system is one of the important components for a Flight Simulator,and it supplies fidelity force-feeling to pilots.According to the Flight control system's principle,the simulation means of the Flight control system in Flight Simulator were given,and three channels lower frictional hydraulic driven digital control loading system were developed.Rapid Control Prototyping technology and Matlab/Simulink graphic program language were used to build the real time control system based on the mathematical model,in order to solve the shortcoming of long time consuming and debugging difficulty used C++ and VC.Experiments have provided that PD control arithmetic was valid.The characteristic of the control loading system is small error and good tracking performance,and it has been applied to Flight Simulator prototype system.

Study on the Washout Algorithm for the Flight Simulator
Machine Tool & Hydraulics, 2006Co-Authors: Han Jun-weiAbstract:The optimal washout algorithm was designed using optimal control theory and incorporating the model of the human vestibular system within the algorithm.The algorithm minimizes the pilot sensation error between the Flight Simulator and the actual aircraft.Simulation results indicate that if weighting matrices are chosen rationally,the optimal washout algorithm can make the Flight Simulator provide very high fidelity motion cueing signals for the pilot.

Flight Simulator of Navigation System in Modeling and Simulation

The function of the navigation system is to provide some important information to other systems in Flight Simulator, such as location, altitude, velocity, acceleration and some other parameters of the airplane. Firstly, the basic principle of the navigation system was discussed. And then, in the Flight Simulator, the method of parameters calculation in the navigation system was proposed. The way of communicating with other systems in order to simulate the process of navigation in the real aircraft was also analyzed. The mode of combining the radio navigation and the inertial navigation in the navigation process was adopted.

An Automated Test System for Flight Simulator Fidelity Evaluation

Flight Simulator fidelity is determined by direct comparison to Flight test, the detailed design process and arithmetic are given. These problems about how to measure Simulator fidelity and about how much fidelity is required to guarantee a certain level of transfer of training is solved. The automated test system consist of testing item file, the file parser ,trim function and the flying part of the test ,evaluation way and transport delay measurement. The design process extends the first phase research results and sums up the two phase results. The test results imply the system structure is reasonable, its performance is effective. The ability to set up and stabilize aircraft model for each test item and act on virtual pilot is the most important contributor to the test efficiencies of the Flight Simulator automated test system.

Flight Simulator Architecture Development and Implementation

With the development of computer science and modeling technology, new more powerful computers and application software have made it possible to built more and more advanced Simulators which allows more complicated and high efficiency simulation. While modern Flight Simulator is a complex system in existence including software and hardware, with the improvement of fidelity request, real-time constraints and other quality attribution of software system must be guaranteed. In order to fulfill the requirements of extendibility, reusability, compatibility and maintainability for Flight Simulator, according to the components of Flight Simulator, software architecture decomposition modules and hardware architecture were given, object-oriented technology and rapid control prototyping technology were used to develop Flight Simulator system. Result shows that the developed system fulfilled above-mentioned requirement.

Systems Analysis for Commercial Aircraft Flight Simulator

With several decades of development, it has already become important tools of aircraft design and development, and necessary means of pilot training. And simulation credibility and reliability of the Flight Simulator have been considerably improved in comparison with the past. However, the system of Flight Simulator has become increasingly complex and difficult to be described clearly. This paper presents the concepts of conceptual layer and achieving layer, analyzes the composition and principle of the commercial aircraft Flight Simulator for pilot training from the two layers, describes the system architecture in detail. According to the system architecture, three aspects are very important to develop the Flight Simulator, the first is the fidelity of the simulation models, the second is the performance of cueing devices, and the last are the computing capacity of the host computers and the time delay over the communication networks.

Design and Implementation of Visual Simulation System in Flight Simulator

And compared with other visual simulation systems, the visual simulation system in Flight Simulator has its own characteristics. Based on its characteristics and the requests of the whole Flight Simulator for the visual simulation system, the design about visual system database, multi-machine synchronization rendering network structure and system simulation program was discussed, the development progress and implementation method of the system were introduced based on Creator/CTS/VegaPrime, and some key technology during the system implementation, including multi-channel communication synchronization, the dynamic management and real-time rendering of large scene, virtual environment simulation, was explored. The visual simulation system is used in the Flight Simulator, produces the expected visual effects with the interactive speed and reaches the functionality and performance requirements on this system.

The Design and Research of the Flight Simulator Motion System and Visual System

The fidelity automatic test system is discussed. The aim is to explore a complex system integration method. The fidelity automatic test system is used to detect the fidelity of motion system and visual system. The results show that the design of motion and visual system is reasonable and the performance can meet demand of fidelity.
