Tree layer dynamics of the Cahnov–Soutok near-natural Floodplain Forest after 33 years (1973–2006)

The research object was the Cahnov–Soutok National Nature Reserve situated on the confluence of Dyje R. and Morava R. in the Czecho–Slovak-Austrian borderland area. This locality has been left to spontaneous development since the beginning of the 1930s. In the years 1973, 1994 and 2006, the surveyed site was subjected to the measurement of standing and lying, live and dead trees reaching a diameter at breast height of 10 cm and the whole area regeneration of woody species. The work objective is to describe the most pronounced trends in tree layer changes having occurred in the period of study and to capture changes in the total tree volume and production of dendromass during the disintegration of the old grazing oak layer. The survey into the near-natural Floodplain Forest of Cahnov–Soutok showed that (1) the most significant trend is a decreased representation of Quercus robur in all monitored indicators and conversely an expanding representation of Acer campestre , Carpinus betulus and Tilia cordata and (2) that the Floodplain Forest ecosystem demonstrates a high-level stability in the total volume of tree biomass with an essential change in the tree species composition, spatial structure and average stem volume of individual trees.

MindasAbstract:Floodplain Forests are considered as key Forest ecosystems in lowland regions of the European temperate zone. Ecosystem services of Floodplain Forests are essential for maintaining and sustainable management of water resources. The ecological role of Floodplain Forest ecosystems in the landscape is emphasized in the context of global change because of flood risk management in landscapes along lowland European river. This chapter deals with these important functions of Floodplain Forests. Authors of the chapter contribute a large amount of their own professional experience and also utilize a large amount from published literature in the field of monitoring, research and management practice of the water regime and its consequences for Floodplain Forests from an European perspective. The aim of the case study from the Czech Republic is to fill the knowledge gaps related to the monetary evaluation of Floodplain Forest habitats endangered by the international water management project Danube–Oder–Elbe channel. The case study is based on published and unpublished research material both from the Czech Republic and also from sources of other European countries. The presented conclusions from this chapter can be of interest for the better understanding of the Floodplain Forests functions and sustainable management of Floodplain Forests and their protection in an European perspective.

Thus, it will be possible to define more efficiently the management plan of this Floodplain Forest ecosystem.

The effect of Floodplain Forest fragmentation on the bird community

MacharAbstract:The paper reports the results of a study focused on ornithocoenoses of Floodplain Forests in Litovelské Pomoraví locality (Czech Republic). The edge effect on diversity of the bird community is discussed and some implications for Floodplain Forest management are presented based on the results of investigations into changes in the bird community due to fragmentation of an originally continuous Forest stand by regeneration felling, and the results of research into ornithocoenoses of the age-diversified mosaic of Forest stands. Perforation of the continuous old Floodplain Forest by clear felling, which was investigated within this study, slightly increased the diversity of nesting birds. However, bird species typical of open cultural landscape benefitted, whose nesting was not recorded before the perforation of the originally continuous Forest ecosystem.

Changes in the fragmentation and ecological stability of the Morava River Floodplain Forest in the course of the 20th century

MacharAbstract:This paper presents the results of an analysis of the changes in the fragmentation and ecological stability of the Floodplain Forest geobiocoenoses in the Protected Landscape Area Litovelské Pomoraví, Czech Republic. Using GIS methods, it was determined that the fragmentation within the study area had increased slightly and the ecological stability of the landscape had decreased slightly between the years 1938 and 2006, although the latter remained on a fairly high level. The data reflect the anthropogenic conditionality of the Floodplain Forest ecosystem and show that an anthropogenically conditioned geobiocoenosis may attain a relatively high level of ecological stability, this being particularly characteristic of Floodplain Forest geobiocoenoses in Central Europe. The results of the study contribute to the documents that will be used in drawing up a management plan for the locality important at the European level which is a part of the Natura 2000 system.
