  • Sustainable control strategies for plant Protection and Food packaging sectors by natural substances and novel nanotechnological approaches

    Abstract:

    An overview is provided of the current technological strategies (also at the nanoscale level) recently involved in plant and/or Food Protection. In addition, the potential use of natural and sustainable substances, instead of traditional synthesized molecules or chemical-based compounds, is addressed both with respect to packaging systems and novel pesticide formulations. In this context, nanotechnological approaches represent promising strategies for the entire agriculture industry chain, from the field to consumers. Traditional plant Protection strategies are often insufficient and the application of chemical-based pesticides has negative effects on animals, humans and the environment. Novel greener tools could represent efficient alternatives for the management of plant diseases using promising strategies; the use of nanotechnologies allows the promotion of the more efficient assembly and subsequent release of environmentally sustainable active principles, limiting the use of chemicals in terms of economic losses. At the same time, new sustainable, antimicrobial and antioxidant systems have been rapidly promoted and investigated in the Food packaging sector as a valid eco-friendly possibility for improving the safety and quality of Food products and reducing and/or limiting the environmental impact with respect to traditional materials. Together, the scientific community and the growing interest of consumers have promoted the development of new edible and eco-friendly packaging that reduces waste and any environmental impact. In this context, the aim is to provide evidence of the usefulness of strategies aiming to limit agrochemicals, as well as the potential of nanomaterials, in sustainable plant and Food Protection for agriculture management and the packaging sector.     Nanotechnology is a promising field of interdisciplinary research and its applications into agriculture industry is getting attention due to the potential benefits that nanomaterials can guarantee in several aspects such as pests management. Traditional plant Protection strategies often result insufficient, and application of pesticides usually produced negative effects for humans and the environment. Here are described nanotechnology applications that would provide green and efficient alternatives for the management of plant diseases induced by several plant pathogens. Furthermore, new sustainable, antimicrobial and antioxidant systems, also at the nanoscaled, were here reported concerning Food packaging sector as valid eco-friendly possibility to improve the safety and quality of Food products.

  • A cybernetic perspective on Food Protection in rats: simple rules can generate complex and adaptable behaviour

    Abstract:

    Many types of animal behaviour, especially seemingly complex social interactions, have been attributed to the existence of complex cognitive mechanisms. Indeed, as specific behaviours are analysed in greater and greater detail, the increasing number of minor variations observed seem to necessitate the operation of increasingly powerful computational devices. An alternate view, inspired by cybernetic theory, is that what is important is not the specific behaviours used by animals, but the goal of the organism in a particular context. When approached in this way, it is possible to deduce simple rules being used by organisms to attain goal states that account for behavioural variation, and importantly, that do not require impossible levels of cognitive power. In this paper, we apply a cybernetic approach to analysing Food protective behaviour in rats. We demonstrate that a simple cybernetic rule, rather than complex computation, produces efficient and effective Food protective behaviour in rats.

  • Organization of sex‐typical patterns of defense during Food Protection in the rat: The role of the opponent's sex

    Feeding rats defend a Food item from an approaching conspecific by turning away, laterally, about 180°. Females and males use a different composition of movements and stepping patterns to perform these defensive dodges. This study was designed to examine the role of the robber's sex on the execution of sex-typical patterns of dodging. All subjects were tested with a partner of each sex. During dodging, females used the female-typical pattern of pivoting around the pelvis, and males used the male-typical midbody pivot, irrespective of the robber's sex. These findings show that the sex-typical patterns of dodging are not determined by the sex of the partner. Females and males however, differed in how they were oriented towards a same sex robber at the end of the dodge. This suggests that while male and female robbers must pose different defensive problems, these differences are dealt with by modifying the sex-typical pattern of dodging rather than by switching to the dodge pattern of the opposite sex. This further suggests that the differences in the composition of the dodge pattern in males and females are not due to extrinsic contingencies, but rather, are due to intrinsic differences in the sex-typical organization of defensive motor patterns.     Veterinary public health (VPH) is a term officially used by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to provide a conceptual framework and programmatic structure for those public health activities which involve the application of knowledge, expertise and resources in veterinary medicine towards the Protection and improvement of human health. It serves as the "linkage" between agriculture and public health. The principles on which VPH is based are deeply rooted in the biological, physical and social sciences, and are widely shared in agriculture, medicine and the environmental sciences. It involves not only veterinarians but also professionals from a host of other disciplines. VPH is dynamic in its scope and functions, and future perspectives are defined by the changing policy and priorities of the health and agriculture sectors. VPH continuously explores the horizons of public health needs for new opportunities in which veterinary medicine has a comparative advantage. The control and eradication of zoonoses and Food Protection remain the prominent functions of VPH. In the region of the Americas, VPH forms one of the central approaches in the strategic orientation and programme priorities of the health sector, having three strategic foci: the elimination of urban rabies, the eradication of foot and mouth disease, and Food Protection. The programme of technical cooperation covers the following components: zoonoses, foot and mouth disease, Food Protection, biomedical models, education and training in veterinary public health, and the development of veterinary public health services.
