Forcipomyia (S.) calchaqui Spinelli & Marino, 1997 and Forcipomyia (S.) soibelzoni Marino & Spinelli, 2001 are recognized as its junior synonyms. A key for the identification of the four species of the subgenus that inhabit the Neotropical region is also presented, and F. murina is compared with the most similar Old World species.

A revision of Biting Midges of the Subgenera Forcipomyia ( MetaForcipomyia ) and F . ( Saliohelea ) from Costa Rica (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae)

Fourteen new species are described and illustrated, F. (M.) pluvialis Malloch is redescribed, and a key to males and females is provided. One new species of the subgenus Forcipomyia (Saliohelea) Wirth & Ratanaworabhan is described and illustrated and F. (S.) leei Wirth & Ratanaworabhan is redescribed. Forcipomyia (Euprojoannisia) pechumani Bystrak & Wirth is transferred to the subgenus F. (Saliohelea). All adult F. (MetaForcipomyia) lack a hind tibial comb and males have antennal flagellomeres 5–8 fused and these are proposed synapomorphies of the subgenus. A truncate labrum is present in F. pluvialis, F. rivalis n. sp. and F. truncata n. sp. and is a derived feature indicating these species form a monophyletic group. We were unable to suggest a synapomorphy indicating the monophyly of F. (Saliohelea). Nearly all Costa Rican members of the subgenera F. (MetaForcipomyia) and F. (Saliohelea) are restricted to wet habitats and are excluded from the dry northwestern portion of this country. Eleven of the 15 new species described herein are present in the lowlands of Costa Rica, suggesting they are actually more broadly distributed to the north and/or south.

Wing pattern variation in the Patagonian biting midge, Forcipomyia (Forcipomyia) multipicta Ingram & Macfie (Diptera, Ceratopogonidae)
Revista de la Sociedad Entomológica Argentina, 2012Co-Authors: Gustavo Ricardo Spinelli, Pablo Ignacio Marino, Melina MauadAbstract:Examination of the type-series and non-type specimens of the Patagonian biting midge, Forcipomyia (Forcipomyia) multipicta Ingram & Macfie (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae), revealed considerable variation in wing patterns of both sexes. One pattern includes several distinct light spot areas, whereas another pattern (e.g, in the holotype) only features marginal light spots in cell r 3 , while other light spots are barely perceptible or absent. The cause(s) of the differential lack of dark macrotrichia in certain areas of the wing membrane in specimens of some series could not be attributed either to their age, sex, or method of preservation.

Larvae have character states typical of other species of Forcipomyin with herbivorous ceratopogonid larvae. Diversidad de Ceratopogonidae (Diptera: Culicomorpha) de la Reserva Natural Integral Punta Lara (Buenos Aires, Argentina)

Este área protegida representa uno de los relictos más australes de la selva en galería, donde el conocimiento de la fauna de insectos es aún limitado. Las capturas se realizaron en ambientes de pastizal y selva en galería, con trampas Malaise y trampas de luz, tipo CDC y embudo. Un total de 4.195 especímenes pertenecientes a nueve géneros y 39 especies de Ceratopogonidae fueron identificados. Se brinda un listado de las especies presentes en el área, y se proveen datos de su distribución geográfica. Veintitrés especies se citan en la Reserva por primera vez, mientras que Dasyhelea mediomunda Minaya, Forcipomyia (Forcipomyia) taragui Marino, Spinelli & Cazorla, Forcipomyia (Microhelea) fuliginosa (Meigen), Stilobezzia (Eukraiohelea) elegantula (Johannsen) y Stilobezzia (Stilobezzia) punctulata Lane se registran por primera vez en la provincia de Buenos Aires.We present the results of the first survey on the Ceratopogonidae from the “Reserva Natural Integral Punta Lara”, in Buenos Aires province. This protected area represents the southernmost relict of gallery forest where the knowledge of the insect fauna is still limited. Catches were conducted in areas of grassland and marginal forest with Malaise traps, CDC light traps and funnel light traps. A total of 4,195 specimens belonging to nine genera and 39 species of Ceratopogonidae were identified. A list of the species present in the protected area is provided, along with their distributional data. GroganAbstract:Cloudless sulphur larvae (Phoebis sennae, Pieridae) were observed in an experimental plantation and also in a natural setting being fed on by the ectoparasitic biting midge, Forcipomyia (Microhelea) eriophora (Williston) (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae). Larvae parasitized by midges died at higher rates in captivity, in contrast to normal levels of mortality in rearings of this species, providing circumstantial evidence for the potential role of these flies in disease transmission.
