    Abstract:

    ABSTRACTConsidering the economic importance of Forest Products industries in Canada, there has been an increasing interest in studying the operations and interactions of all the relevant entities involved in its supply chain (SC). The Forest Products Industry has a set of specific SC characteristics to meet the needs of its final consumers. While a growing number of mathematical and simulation models are being presented for the SC in this sector, an integrated formal structure is evidently required for guiding the development of and evaluating these models. Therefore, in this research, we systematically review and identify existing frameworks for modelling SCs with the interest of highlighting the ones relevant to the Forest Products SCs. While we find no framework specific to the Forest Products Industry, we identify a number of existing frameworks that could be customized to represent the Industry's SC.

    Abstract:

    This paper designs our agility framework applied to the Forest Products Industry. We aim to provide an end-to-end process covering enterprise modelling, turbulences understanding, agility drivers’ definition and finally change/actions analysis. The industrial context and the research problem are first explored. A multidimensional agility design and deployment framework is developed considering conceptual, contextual, experimental and decisional dimensions. The first two dimensions give the specification components of the agility as a high-level vision. The experimental dimension serves first to validate interactions within the model, then as a tool to assess risk, opportunities and potential solutions. The decisional dimension is then introduced as a complement to develop the ability to face unexpected changes and especially to analyse orientations. A proof-of-concept called LOGI LUMBER supply chain is used throughout the framework development. Two experimental generations were accomplished based on 15 scenarios run and analysed with our modelling and optimisation software calledLogiLab.

This paper proposes on architecture which aims to enable the development of advanced planning systems for the Forest Products Industry. This architecture combines agent technology with operational research, in order to take advantage of the ability of agent-based technology to integrate distributed decision problems, and the ability of operation research to solve complex decision problems This paper describes how this architecture has been configured into an advanced planning and scheduling tool for the lumber Industry, and how it is being validated

    Abstract:

    The new economic challenges and recent trends in globalization have made it very difficult for Canadian Forest product companies to improve their financial position without the coordinated involvement of the entire company, including their supply chains (distributed facilities, company offices, industrial customers, and distributors). Such a new level of efficiency involves their distributed facilities and offices spread around the world, and their customers. One consequence of this new reality is that Forest Products companies are now facing the need to re-engineer their organizational processes and business practices with their partners. To do this they must adopt new technologies to support the coordination of their planning and control efforts in a customer-centered environment. This paper first proposes a generic software architecture for development of an experimentation environment to design and test distributed advanced planning and scheduling systems. This architecture enables combination of agent-based technology and operations research-based tools in order to first take advantage of the ability of agent technology to integrate distributed decision problems, and, second, to take advantage of the ability of operations research to develop and exploit specific normative decision models. Next, this paper describes how this architecture has been configured into an advanced planning and scheduling tool for the lumber Industry. Finally, we present how an application of this advanced planning tool is currently being validated and tested in a real manufacturing setting.

    Abstract Forest Products Industry should maximize the value of timber harvested and associated Products in order to be competitive in global markets. Enhanced Forest inventories and merchandizing yards can help in maximizing value recovery in the Forest Products supply chain. This study develops an optimization model to analyze the economic impact of enhanced Forest inventory information and merchandizing yard operations in the Forest Products supply chain. The application of the model is demonstrated by using a case study of a hypothetical Forest Industry in northwestern Ontario, which obtains four log assortment grades from the surrounding eight Forest management units. The model analyzes five different scenarios with 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% certainty of tree quality in Forest inventory information. The results of the study show that with full certainty of tree quality information, it is possible to gain 49% in gross profit in comparison with a scenario with no certainty. The usefulness of enhanced Forest inventory and merchandizing yard in the entire supply chain of Forest Products Industry is recognized by maximizing total value of wood fiber (by allocating right log to the right product), reducing fluctuations in raw wood fiber supply, and minimizing inventory carrying costs and lost sales.

    Abstract:

    The Canadian Forest Products Industry has failed to retain its competitiveness in the global markets because of the under-utilization of its resources. Supply chain optimization models can identify the best possible fibre utilization strategies from multiple options of value creation based on fluctuating market conditions in the Forest industries. This paper comprehensively reviews the literature related to supply chain models used both in general and specifically in the Forest Products Industry. The optimization models use information from multiple agents (market demand attributes, flexible wood procurement and manufacturing processes, and resource characteristics), and share this information at each level in the supply chain network. However, the modeling of two-way flow of information (market to Forests and vice-versa) for order promising and demand fulfillment through all facilities including manufacturing, processing, raw material procurement and inventory control is missing. The studies that focus on optimization are mostly deterministic in nature and do not account for uncertainty both in supply of raw materials and demand of Forest Products. Simulation and optimization models have been independently used for supply chain management in the past. The literature lacks an integrated approach that combines simulation and optimization models throughout the supply chain network of the Canadian Forest Products Industry. Further studies should focus on developing simulation-based optimization models that will help in providing an operational planning tool that meets industrial expectations and provides much better solutions than current industrial practice.

    Purpose – From the standpoint of the future of corporate social responsibility, students' perceptions are an important research proposition. Several studies have been conducted to examine this phenomenon, yet sector‐specific studies are rather scant. The primary purpose of this work is to examine students' perceptions regarding social responsibility in the context of the US Forest Products Industry.Design/methodology/approach – A total of 257 graduate and upper level undergraduate students from Oregon State University and University of Montana, pursuing different academic majors, were surveyed to examine the differences in their perceptions of the US Forest Products Industry's success in fulfilling its corporate social responsibilities.Findings – Results suggest that business and Forest ecology/environmental science students were least satisfied with Industry fulfilling its economic responsibilities.     Abstract As corporate social responsibility (CSR) becomes an increasingly mainstream proposition for business organizations, it is becoming increasingly important to develop sector-specific knowledge as well as to explore different aspects of this concept. Adopting an issues management approach, we have discussed that understanding perceptions and expectations of various demographic segments about business performance along relevant social and environmental issues is a research gap in the broader field of CSR. This is particularly true for Forest Products Industry in the US where there is very little research done in the field. For filling this gap, data was collected from the residents within the states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. Results indicate that varying degrees of differences exist in different demographic categories (gender, education level, place of residence, and age). These results have important implications for the US Forest Products sector, especially as companies formulate their socio-environmental strategy and communication.

    Abstract:

    Innovativeness is a concept that has seen extensive study, yet there remain significant gaps in our understanding of the phenomenon. This is especially true when considering views of practitioners as well as specific Industry sectors, such as the Forest Products Industry. The qualitative work described here explores the concept of innovativeness from the perspective of Forest Industry managers. Managers consistently described five aspects of what it means to be an innovative company: (i) new, (ii) creating the ''right'' culture, (iii) managing the market-customer link, (iv) being a leader, and (v )a focus on the future. Similar to past research, managers identified new or improved Products, processes, and business sys- tems as areas within which a firm can be innovative. Results also outline challenges that firms face as they attempt to be- come innovative, how they would go about measuring innovativeness, and how they build innovative capacity. Based on these findings, we suggest that firms have significant opportunities to increase innovativeness and, thereby, enhance com- petitiveness. Resume´ : L'innovativiteest un concept qui a fait l'objet d'etudes approfondies mais il y a encore d'importantes lacunes dans notre comprehension du phenomene. Cela est particulierement vrai lorsqu'on considere l'opinion des praticiens ainsi que certains secteurs industriels tels que l'industrie des produits Forestiers. Le travail qualitatif decrit ici explore le concept d'innovativitedu point de vue des gestionnaires de l'industrie Forestiere. Les gestionnaires decrivent invariablement cinq elements qui caracterisent une compagnie novatrice : nouveaute ´, creer la culture appropriee, gerer la relation entre le mar- cheet les clients, etre un chef de file et etre tournevers le futur.   • The standardization puzzle : An issue management approach to understand corporate responsibility standards for the Forest Products Industry

    Abstract:

    There are increasing discussions regarding creation of global corporate social responsibility (CSR) standards. One important approach to understanding CSR is issue management. We adopted an issue identification approach to examine the issues faced by the Forest Products industries in the United States and India. Interviews were conducted with a range of key informants regarding social responsibility issues in the Forest Products Industry in both countries. Our results show that there are marked differences in the issues with which key informants think Forest Products companies should be concerned. The results suggest that even though overarching CSR guidelines are globally relevant, any CSR standard for global Forest Products companies must maintain context-specific components.
