WyldAbstract:This article presents an analysis of three years results from the quarterly Report on Technology in Supply Management, conducted through a joint effort of the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) (formerly the National Association of Purchasing Managers) and Forrester Research. This report provides the best snapshot on the growth of e‐procurement in the United States. However, the sponsors do not publicly provide any analysis on the trends the data show from quarter‐to‐quarter. Now, with three years of available data from the twelve quarterly surveys conducted to date, there is an opportunity to analyze the adoption rates of e‐procurement tools, techniques and protocols in the American marketplace. The author of this study has conducted just such a longitudinal analysis of the ISM/Forrester data, examining the trends for organizations across the U.S. marketplace. What is demonstrated is that overall, both in manufacturing and service‐oriented firms and in large and small purchasing organizations, e‐procurement methods are rising and reaching “critical mass” in most areas with the “e‐way” fast becoming “the way”. However, important differences due exist between the groups and their specific needs, motivations, and results in their shift to an electronic acquisition environment. These are highlighted and discussed in this article.

The origins of the term lie in the invention of tags that reflect or retransmit a radiofrequency signal. According to a recent article by Forrester Research, the minimal ‘Slap and Ship ’ approach to RFID compliance will cost an individual company between $2 million and $20 million. Because retailers like Wal-Mart plan to share with their suppliers all the RFID-generated data points (from when a case/pallet enters their distribution centre until it leaves their stockroom), suppliers will eventually be able to use this data as a powerful forecasting tool. RFID is an enabling technology that can potentially facilitate a real-time, end-to-end supply chain visibility system. Suppliers who integrate full-scale RFID systems will realize efficiencies in time, material movement, inventory planning, shipping and warehousing both internally and externally. This paper provides a brief overview of the RFID technology, mandates by retailers and federal agencies, advances towards global standardization and typical consumer level RFID applications, and discusses RFID initiatives taken by some of the global leaders in apparel, consumer goods and fresh produce industries. A Risk-Control Framework for E-Marketplace Participation

Forrester Research predicts that the growth and use of e-marketplaces may reach US $7 to $10 trillion by the year 2005 and may account for 53% of all online businesses by the year 2005. White and Daniel (2003) describe e-marketplaces as Web-based systems that enable automated transactions, trading, or collaboration between business partners. According to Bakos (1998), an electronic marketplace is an interorganizational system that allows participating buyers and sellers to exchange information about processes, products, and services. This study aims to examine risks in e-marketplaces. We identify four types of risks: economic, technological, implementation, and relational risks in seven e-marketplace firms from a cross-section of different industries. We then present the control measures in the responses that the seven firms enforced in order to reduce and manage their risks. The contribution of this study is the development of a risk-control framework based on the findings for e-marketplace participation.

A Case Study in the Role of Trust in Web Service Securities

The reasons for using the Internet include: first considerably reducing the coordination costs involved in inter-organizational transactions. Second, business partners from remote locations are able to communicate and coordinate together using Web services and finally, the widespread adoption of open standards on the Web has greatly reduced the complexities thereby providing flexibility in conducting inter-organizational transactions. According to Forrester Research, e-commerce in the U.S. will grow at 19% reaching $230 billion by 2008. Today firms are attempting to attain their value chain goals by offering and selling products and services in an increasingly competitive market environment. Given the uncertainties of online transactions, Web services encourage the creation of institutional structures for online exchange relationships. Building upon the notion of institutional structures, this chapter examines the role of technology trust that develops through governance mechanisms and provides structural assurances that in turn enhance relationship trust thereby reducing and mitigating risks in Web services.

The Impact of Risks and Challenges in E-Commerce Adoption Among SMEs
Encyclopedia of Information Science and Technology Second Edition, 1Co-Authors: Pauline RatnasingamAbstract:E-commerce provides different opportunities to small businesses as it overcomes part of their technical, environmental, organizational, and managerial inadequacies (Bergeron, Raymond, & Rivard, 2001; Hussin, King, & Cragg, 2002). According to Forrester Research, e-commerce in the US will grow at 19% reaching $230 billion by 2008. Further, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) estimated that in 2003, there were 27 million small business tax returns. Small businesses are an important and integral part of every nation’s economy (Hambrick & Crozier, 1985). The US Small Business Administration (SBA) defines a small business as “an independent business having fewer than 500 employees or is independently owned and not dominant in its field of operation.” Small firms play an increasingly crucial role in US economy. They employ more than one half of the US private sector work force, are responsible for about one-half of the GDP, and generate more than one half of all sales in the US create 60%-80% of net new jobs annually (Ibrahim, Angelidids, J. & Parsa, 2004). Alternatively, small businesses are often more challenged than larger firms by resource constraints, such as lack of fi- nancial capital, and technical or managerial skills, knowledge and expertise that significantly reduce the number and types of options available to management (Hodgetts & Kuratko, 2001). Previous Research suggests that although most small businesses were connected to the Internet, the potential use of the Internet in their business was rarely explored. Security concerns has a direct impact on every critical part of the small business including reputation, productivity, and business continuity, as they need to adhere to the legal requirement for information management. The Research question thus designed for this study is what factors inhibit or pose challenges for e-commerce adoption among small businesses? We discuss the findings of an exploratory case study with four firms, across a section of different industries, on the risks and challenges they encountered when adopting e-commerce. The study contributes to managerial and theoretical implications by increasing the importance and awareness of small businesses in e-commerce adoption.

La gestión sustentable en los recursos informáticos

However, such tools have not been sufficiently utilized to create a conscience of sustainability in their utilization. On the contrary, and according to Forrester Research, the statistics suggest a notable increase in electronic waste and electric energy consumption. In this context, the present investigation aims to explore the relationship between humankind and technology, specifically, the utilization of computer resources as a strategic ally for an environmental culture and the determination of usage actions by university students. We carried out a quantitative study with a cross-sectional and descriptive design by applying a 17-item survey which reliability was 0.87. For the sake of a more comprehensive analysis, the study variables were broken down into the dimensions of usage actions, supplies, and software configuration.Hoy en día son innegables los beneficios de las tecnologías de información y comunicación para el ser humano. Sin embargo, estas herramientas no han sido suficientemente utilizadas para crear consciencia sustentable en el uso de las mismas. Por el contrario, y de acuerdo con Forrester Research, las estadísticas muestran un incremento notable en los desechos electrónicos y en el consumo de energía eléctrica. En este contexto, la presente investigación busca indagar la relación entre el hombre y las tecnologías, específicamente el aprovechamiento de los recursos informáticos como un aliado estratégico de una cultura ambiental y la determinación de las acciones de uso en estudiantes universitarios. Se realizó un estudio cuantitativo con diseño descriptivo transversal aplicando un instrumento de 17 ítems validado con un nivel de confianza de 0.87. Para un mejor análisis de los resultados, las variables se desglosaron en las dimensiones de consumibles, hardware y configuración del software.
