  • how to automatically identify major research sponsors selecting keywords from the wos Funding Agency field
    Scientometrics, 2018
    Co-Authors: Fernanda Morillo, Belen Alvarezbornstein
    Abstract:

In a context of increasingly limited resources, the demand for information from research Funding bodies is growing. The exploitation of the Funding acknowledgements collected in WoS publications can be useful for these sponsors, not only because it allows them to know the published results with their financial support, but also because it provides a framework to evaluate the efficiency of the different Funding instruments. The present work adds to the knowledge of previous studies to offer a simple and efficient methodology that automatically identifies major sponsors, and their funded research, using keywords. To this end, articles with Spain in the address field and English in the language field are obtained (years 2010–2014), given that WoS only considers Funding acknowledgements written in English. Subsequently, the Funding Agency field of these articles is treated, selecting funders’ variants that will serve as keywords in the Full-Text Search for the location of the research supported by major sponsors. In addition, a sample of reviewed documents is provided to evaluate the reliability of the proposed methodology, performing also some statistical tests. The results show a recall of 91.5% of the sample articles, with a precision of 99%. Notwithstanding, there are differences in the automatic identification of funders by institutional sector and/or area, being the Government sector the one with the highest precision and recall, and the area of Agriculture, Biology and Environment the one with the best degree of association between the automatic classification and the reviewed one. Finally, possible future developments are offered, paying special attention to increasing the automation of the standardisation of funders’ names.

  • confined to a tokenistic status social scientists in leadership roles in a national health research Funding Agency
    Social Science & Medicine, 2017
    Co-Authors: Mathieu Albert, Suzanne Laberge
    Abstract:

The idea of interdisciplinarity has been taken up by academic and governmental organisations around the world and enacted through science policies, Funding programs and higher education institutions. In Canada, interdisciplinarity led to a major transformation in health research Funding. In 2000, the federal government closed the Medical Research Council (MRC) and created the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). From the outset, CIHR's vision and goals were innovative, as it sought to include the social sciences within its purview alongside more traditional health research sectors. The extent to which it has been successful in this endeavour, however, remains unknown. The aim of our study was to examine how CIHR's intentions to foster inclusiveness and cooperation across disciplines were implemented in the Agency's own organisational structure. We focused on social scientists' representation on committees and among decision-makers between 2000 and 2015, one of the key mandates of CIHR being to include the social sciences within its remit and support research in this area. We examined the composition of the Governing Council, the Institute Scientific Directors, the Chairs of the College of Reviewers, and two International Review Panels invited by CIHR. We targeted these committees and decision-makers since they hold the power to influence the field of Canadian health research through the decisions they make. Our findings show that, while CIHR was created with the mandate to support the entire spectrum of health-related research-including the social sciences-this call for inclusiveness has not yet been materialized in the Agency's organisational structure. Social scientists, as well as researchers from neighbouring disciplines such as social epidemiology, health promotion and the humanities, are still confined to low levels of representation within CIHR's highest echelons. This imbalance limits social scientists' input into health research in Canada and undermines CIHR's interdisciplinary ambition.

  • The influence of European Framework Programmes on scientific collaboration in nanotechnology
    Scientometrics, 2013
Co-Authors: María-antonia Ovalle-perandones, Juan Gorraiz, Martin Wieland, Christian Gumpenberger, Carlos Olmeda-gómez
    Abstract:

This study deals primarily with the effect of certain European Framework Programmes on EU-27 member states' publication output in nanotechnology, with a focus on their scientific collaboration over the last ten years. The study was conducted at three levels (category, journal and publication). The aim was to verify whether the newly launched category is sufficiently complete, as well as to identify the most prominent journals and compare the EU-27 member states' output to world production. Snapshots of European networking are also provided for three key dates (2001, 2006 and 2011) to ascertain the positions of emerging and central countries and analyse their variations over time. The results confirm the speedy development in the field and the importance of the EU-27s world role. They corroborate the close correlation between Funding and increased output and the intensification of collaboration among member states. Finally, the information contained in the "Funding Agency" field in the Web of Science database was also compiled, with a view to substantiating the validity of the estimated impact of EU-Funding programmes on member states' scientific output.
