  • sexual fluidity and related attitudes and beliefs among young adults with a same Gender Orientation
    Archives of Sexual Behavior, 2015
Co-Authors: Sabra L Katzwise, Janet Shibley Hyde
    Abstract:

Little research has examined whether experiencing sexual fluidity—changes over time in attractions and sexual Orientation identity—is related to specific cognitions. This study explored attitudes and beliefs among sexually fluid and non-sexually fluid individuals and developed two new measures of sexuality beliefs based on Diamond’s sexual fluidity research and Dweck’s psychological theory of intelligence beliefs. Participants were 188 female and male young adults in the United States with a same-Gender Orientation, ages 18–26 years. Participants completed an online questionnaire which assessed sexual fluidity in attractions and sexual Orientation identity, attitudes toward bisexuality, sexuality beliefs, and demographics. Sexual fluidity in attractions was reported by 63 % of females and 50 % of males, with 48 % of those females and 34 % of those males reporting fluidity in sexual Orientation identity. No significant Gender differences in frequency of sexual fluidity were observed. Sexually fluid females had more positive attitudes toward bisexuality than non-sexually fluid females; however, no significant difference was observed for males. Females were more likely than males to endorse sexual fluidity beliefs and to believe that sexuality is changeable; and sexually fluid persons were more likely than non-sexually fluid persons to hold those two beliefs. Among males, non-sexually fluid individuals were more likely than sexually fluid individuals to believe that sexuality is something an individual is born with. Females were more likely than males to endorse the belief that sexuality is influenced by the environment. Findings from this research link sexual fluidity with specific cognitions.

  • Performance analysis of keyword advertising campaign using Gender-brand effect of search queries
Electronic Commerce Research and Applications, 2014
Co-Authors: Partha Mukherjee, Bernard J. Jansen
    Abstract:

In this research, we analyze the relationship among (1) the performance metrics of a sponsored search campaign, (2) the Gender Orientation of queries, and (3) the occurrence of branded terms in queries. The aim of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of increased personalization of search engine advertising in order to improve the consumer’s online experience. We segregate keyphrases from a dataset covering thirty-three consecutive months from a major US retailer consisting of 7 million daily records of a real time keyword advertising campaign into three Gender categories (male, female and neutral) each with two groups (branded and unbranded) term usage. Using ANOVA, we analyze the effect of Gender and brand keyphrases on critical sponsored search performance metrics of impressions, clicks, cost-per-clicks, sales revenue, orders, items purchased and return on advertising. Research findings show that the combination of brand focus with the Gender-Orientation of keyphrases is a significant factor in predicting sponsored search performance and behavior. There are statistically significant variations in consumer behavior as measured by sponsored search metrics among the Gender categories. Specifically, females are more attracted to the use of branded terms than males, perhaps due to the trust and customer loyalty generated by brand image. Our results establishes that positive brand reputation creates dramatic influence on consumer’s loyalty over the brand and hence strongly affects their interests, activities and purchasing behavior in e-commerce environment.

CHI '13 Extended Abstracts on Human Factors in Computing Systems on - CHI EA '13, 2013
Co-Authors: Partha Mukherjee, Bernard J. Jansen
    Abstract:

In this research, we analyze the relationship among (1) the numbers of clicks generated by the key-phrases users provide as queries in sponsored search, (2) the interaction between the Gender Orientation of those key-phrases, and (3) the occurrence of branded terms in those queries. The aim of this research is increased personalization of search engine results for branded queries targeting a specific Gender. This will improve the consumer's online searching experience and potential interest in ads with branding focus. Increased personalization of search engine results and enhancement of users' interest in branded ads will also increase the revenue and profit of the advertisers. Our data consists of 7 million daily records from a keyword advertising campaign from a major US retailer. We segregate the key-phrases into six different categories. The Gender Orientation of terms has male, female and neutral categories each with two groups: - branded and unbranded phrases. Using one way Analysis of Variance, we analyze the effect of Gender Orientation of both branded and unbranded key-phrases on number of users' clicks on the queries submitted to web search engine. The result shows that the means of users' clicks significantly vary among the categories. Moreover the result shows that the group formed by combination of female Gender with branded terms generates maximum number of clicks among all six categories. Females may be more attracted to the use of branded terms due to the positive attitude and customer loyalty generated by brand image.

Co-Authors: G Estela Arcos, V Irma Molina, R. E. Trumper, C Liliana Larrañaga, María Isabel Del Río, Patricia Tomic, M Debbie Guerra, U Myrna Uarac, Pablo Szmulewicz
    Abstract:

We report the results of a descriptive exploratory study of the perception of new and senior students and teachers of Universidad Austral de Chile, with regards to the concept and perspective of Gender. A quantitative and qualitative approach to characterize and to explain the behavior and observed tendencies. Individual interviews structured in two dimensions, knowledge and opinion, were done to 252 students. The qualitative fieldwork was carried out with eleven focus groups of students and schools directors. The results show an undefined position with respect to knowledge and opinion in new and senior students and a traditional behavior of Gender in students and school directors. This allows to infer that the university does not provide Gender Orientation in educative process and reproduces and legitimizes the traditional socialization of Gender.
