Abstract : Studies on punctuation and translator’s style, still in their infancy in translation studies, show obligatory or optional shifts in translated texts that change the style of source texts. This article investigates the use of colons and suspension dots as a feature of translator’s style. The aim is showing that there are translator’s preference patterns probably oriented towards the translation audience. Research work such as Baker (2000), Munday (2008), Saldanha (2011), May (1997), Minelli (2005) and Novodvorski (2013) are used as the theoretical framework for the analysis carried out in the study. Studies on punctuation in English and Portuguese (QUIRK et al ., 1985; HALLIDAY, 1985; TUFANO, 2005) are also used. The corpus analyzed is composed of three collections of short stories by Philip Roth, John Updike and Jumpha Lahiri and their translation into Brazilian Portuguese by Paulo Henriques Britto. The texts are part of Corpus ESTRA (MAGALHAES, 2014). Corpus tools of WordSmith Tools© 6.0 were used in the methodology to Generate Statistic data automatically and concordance lines. Microsoft Word 2010 was also used for text alignment and the categorization of shifts in the use of punctuation marks. The findings confirm patterns of translator’s choice in using colons and suspension dots with different frontiers between clauses that probably help the translation audience in their understanding of the texts. They also confirm Saldanha’s (2011) argument that the translator’s style can be influenced by the source text narrative. Keywords : Translator’s Style; Punctuation; Corpus tools; Paulo Henriques Britto.
