  • Roles of Neighborhood Group to Promote Participatory Development in Indonesia: Case of Three Villages in Purbalingga District, Central Java Province

    Abstract:

    Neighborhood Group (Rukun Tetangga/RT), an association of fifties households living in the same areas, is expected to promote participatory development in Indonesian decentralization. This study aims to analyze whether it could promote participatory development. To do so, a case study was conducted in three villages, namely Kedarpan, Serang and Sumilir, in Purbalingga district of Central Java province. Totally 240 household heads in 24RTs were randomly selected to be the respondents. Data were analyzed through qualitative and quantitative techniques. Three main findings emerge from this study. Firstly, community involvement was pseudo participation emphasizing more on resource mobilization but less in Generating Idea and controlling the government. Secondly, capacity of RTheads was good enough in term of informativeness, encouragement, fairness, creativity, responsiveness and submission to consensus, but slightly poor in term of accountability. Thirdly, RT was not able to empower community, so community understanding to decentralization terms,  development programs and village governance was generally poor. Although some potentialities were found,it can be generally concluded thatRT is not completely successful in promoting participatory development.Complexities of institutional problems, whichinclude weak capacity, trouble in technical regulations and lack of support from government, are among the factors hampering RT to play its role. Thus, hand in hand with capacity development ofRThead, the government is supposed to establish regulations supporting the empowerment of RT, and involving other rural institutions to help  performing the roles that still cannot be played by RT.     Abstract:

    Tonarigumi, a neighborhood group consisting of fifty to hundred households living in the same areas, is expected to promote participatory development in Indonesian decentralization system. This study aims to analyze whether tonarigumi could promote participatory development. A case study was conducted in three villages, namely Kedarpan, Serang and Sumilir, in Purbalingga district of Central Java province. Totally 240 household heads in 24 tonarigumies were randomly selected. Findings of this study demonstrate that tonarigumi is not completely successful in promoting participatory development.   • The effectiveness of higher order thinking skills for Generating Idea among technical students

    Abstract:

    Higher order thinking skills (HOTS) is an imperative aspect in teaching and learning especially at higher education institutions. Students with higher order thinking skills are able to find new ways to solve their daily problems and make appropriate decisions. Hence, the purpose of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness of HOTS for Generating Idea among technical students. This quantitative approach research used the quasi-experimental design with one treatment groups and one control group comprising 81 students. Marzano HOTS was used for Generating Idea in this research. Meanwhile, individual assignment evaluation rubric was modified to assess the level of achievement on the students’ assignments. The findings showed that there was significant differences between treatment group and control group on the overall individual post assignment result. There were significant differences between treatment group and control group on the five evaluation criteria of individual post assignment result. Besides that, the findings revealed that treatment group have significant differences between individual pre and post assignment on overall and five evaluation criteria result. Consequently, learning HOTS by using self-instructional manual approach for Generating Ideas is significantly effective.

    Abstract:

    The generation of an Idea that goes through several phases is affected by individual factors, interests, preferences and motivation. The purpose of this research was to analyze the difference in difficulties of Generating Ideas according to individual learning styles. A total of 375 technical students from four technical universities in Malaysia were randomly selected as samples. The Kolb Learning Styles Inventory and a set of developed questionnaires were used in this research. The results showed that the most dominant learning style among technical students is Doer. A total of 319 (85.1%) technical students faced difficulties in solving individual assignments. Most of the problem faced by technical students is the difficulty of Generating Ideas for solving individual assignments. There was no significant difference in difficulties of Generating Ideas according to students’ learning styles. Therefore, students need to learn higher order thinking skills enabling students to generate Ideas and consequently complete assignments.

Improving Students’ Skill to Generate Ideas in Writing Descriptive Texts Using 3D Pop-up Pictures (A Classroom Action Research at SMP N 1 Mayong, Jepara). Thesis, the consultants: Dra. Dewi Rochsantiningsih, M.Ed, Ph.D and Dr. Sujoko, M.A. Surakarta: English Education Department of Graduate School, Sebelas Maret University, 2016. The objectives of the research are: (1) to identify whether the use of 3D Pop-up pictures can improve the students’ skill to generate Ideas in writing descriptive text or not; and (2) to describe the difficulties in implementing 3D Pop-up pictures in this research. The Classroom Action Research was conducted at SMP N 1 Mayong, Jepara for 7 months from June to December 2016. The subject of the research was the seventh grade students of SMP N 1 Mayong, Jepara consisted of 36 students. The method consisted of 2 cycles. Every cycle included planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. In collecting data, I used observation, documentation, questionnaire, interview, and test. After collecting the data, the researcher analysed quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data were analysed by Descriptive Statistics. It compared among, Pre and post test 1 and 2. Meanwhile the qualitative data were analysed by CCM (Constant Comparative Method). It consisted of comparing incidents applicable to each category, integrating categories, delimiting theory, and writing theory. The result of the research shows that 3D Pop-up picture can improve students’ skill to generate Ideas, which focuses on (1) increasing the number of paragraphs in piece of writing; (2) increasing the number of sentences in each paragraph to support main Idea; (3) mention objective facts of a thing; (4) mention the opinion of the thing they describe; (5) produce more grammatical sentences; (6) use correct precise diction; (7) connect the sentences by using cohesive devices. The mean score for pre test: 50.9, test cycle I: 62.2 and for test cycle II: 73.2. Compared to KKM (passing grade) which is 73, the score is improving. There are some difficulties in the implementation of teaching writing using 3D Pop-up picture: (1) making the students concentrate when the teacher explains the material; (2) increasing the ability of the students to know the meaning of the words in English; (3) making the class situation became quiet; (4) making the students more active to interact with the teacher by asking some questions; (5) making the students participate to move forward to write their answer. In conclusion, 3D Pop-up picture is able to improve students’ skill to generate Ideas in writing descriptive texts and there are some difficulties in implementing 3D Pop-up picture. The suggestion for English teacher that 3D Pop-up picture can be used in teaching writing, especially descriptive text. Thesis. 1st consultant: Dr. Abdul Asib M.Pd.; 2nd consultant: Dr. Sumardi, M.Hum. English Education Department, Graduate School, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Sebelas Maret University Surakarta The research is intended to: (1) describe whether or not and to what extent Round table technique can enhance the students’ ability in Generating Ideas to write recount text; and (2) identify the class climate when Round table technique is implemented in the writing class. This action research was carried out at SMPN 2 Banjarnegara for the students of class 8 E in the academic year of 2015/2016. It was held from March – August 2016. The research method was Classroom Action Research and it was conducted in two cycles. In collecting the data, I used interviews, observation, questionnaire, diaries, document, and test. Having collected the data, I analyzed them both qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were analyzed by using Constant Comparative Method. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were analyzed by descriptive statistics. The finding of the research showed that the implementation of Round Table Technique enhanced: (1) students’ ability in Generating Ideas including: (a) writing main Ideas; (b) writing more supporting Ideas; (c) using correct cohesive devices; (d) using correct vocabularies; (e) using correct mechanics. The enhancement of the students’ scores could be proved that the mean score of the pre-test was 50.93; the post-test 1 was 64.63; the post-test 2 was 79.23. Twenty eight students or 82.35% from 32 students had fulfilled the criteria of passing grade (KKM) which was 78 and (2) enhanced the class climate including: (a) students’ attention to the teaching and learning process was getting better; (b) students got more alive condition; (c) the students’ participation was more active; (d) the time needed to write a text was shorter than before the research was conducted. Considering the inspiring result of this research, it is recommended that the English teachers are able to use this research for: (1) guiding the students to explore the students’ Ideas through Round table technique; and (2) being creative to make the class climate interesting by using Round table technique in writing.
