    Abstract:

    In this demonstration, we present Limosa, an interactive system for visualization of Geographic interests of users in Twitter. The system supports the modeling of comprehensive Geographic characteristics of topics discussed in microblogs, both with respect to locations that postings originate from and also locations mentioned within the posting itself. Limosa then provides visualizations of Geographic user interests, including the Geographic Scope of topics, terms, or the semantics associated with specific locations. Using a variety of recommendation strategies, we show that Limosa provides effective news and user recommendations.

  • Paths and Geographic Scope of international expansion across industries

    Abstract:

    Abstract In this paper, we investigate how firms’ international expansion paths and their Geographic Scope differ across industries, with longitudinal data from 1999 to 2008 for Fortune Global 500 firms. We first classify firms into three generic paths of international expansion based on the industry characteristics (i.e., institution-driven, capability-driven, and linkage-driven). We then investigate the differences in three generic international expansion paths and Geographic Scope with descriptive and growth curve analyses. The results show that firms operating in an institution-driven industry mostly expand their upstream activity internationally, but their Geographic Scope is limited. In contrast, those firms in a capability-driven industry mainly expand their downstream international activities, potentially beyond a regional Geographic boundary. Firms in a linkage-driven industry likely coordinate both upstream and downstream activities internationally, but with larger Geographic Scope in downstream activities than upstream activities. Thus, firms across industries have taken distinctive paths of international expansion with substantially different Geographic Scope of operation.

    Abstract:

    Extending extant literature on Geographic Scope that has primarily focused on its role in value creation, I investigate the value appropriation aspect of Geographic Scope of knowledge acquisition. I maintain that isolating mechanisms created via Geographic Scope of knowledge acquisition can help firms prevent competitors from accessing their innovative knowledge and, by doing so, can help firms capture a larger proportion of economic returns from innovation, thus helping them enjoy better financial performance. Mediating and moderating effect analyses with patent- and firm-level data of the semiconductor industry corroborate the value appropriation aspect of Geographic Scope.

  • Many roads lead to Rome: Implications of Geographic Scope as a source of isolating mechanisms

    Abstract:

    Studies examining the competitive implications of Geographic Scope have largely focused on creating competitive advantage. In an attempt to investigate a less-illuminated role of Geographic Scope – that of sustaining competitive advantage – this paper investigates the sources of and relationships among the causal factors leading to creation of isolating mechanisms or barriers to imitation. This paper first distinguishes two sources of causal factors linked to the creation of isolating mechanisms, intrinsic characteristics of knowledge , and Geographic Scope of knowledge acquisition, and then investigates the relationships among the causal factors from the two sources. Employing the fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis method, this paper examines equifinality and functional equivalence of causal factors from the two sources. Empirical analyses with United States Patent and Trademark Office patent data of the semiconductor industry corroborate the main thesis of the paper that multiple paths can lead to the creation of isolating mechanisms and, in these paths, causal factors from the two sources of isolating mechanisms can be functionally equivalent. The results also provide managerial implications that firms with different sets of resources and capabilities can implement different types of isolating strategies to sustain their competitive advantage.
