  • slab breakoff a critical appraisal of a Geological Theory as applied in space and time
    Earth-Science Reviews, 2018
Co-Authors: Eduardo Garzanti, Giuditta Radeff, Marco G Malusa
    Abstract:

Abstract The idea that prominent Geological phenomena observed in the crust and at the surface may be caused by the detachment of subducting dense lithosphere has been anticipated by tectonic models in the Sixties and Seventies, and imaged with improved geophysical techniques in the Eighties. In the mid-Nineties, the model of slab breakoff was defined formally by Davies and von Blanckenburg. Initially proposed as a thought-provoking working hypothesis, the Theory rapidly received wide a priori acceptance and was applied to virtually every mountain range around the world, and even in orogens as old as Paleoproterozoic and Archean, to explain a range of different phenomena. These include magmatic flare-ups, rapid topographic uplift, increasing sediment supply, fast exhumation of metamorphic rocks, ore mineralizations, anomalous distribution of seismicity, changes in stress regimes, and inversion of subduction polarity. Even multiple breakoff events were assumed to have occurred at different times in the same orogenic belt or subduction zone. In the last 20 years, slab breakoff has been invoked in so many settings and time frames that it could have hardly taken place in each and every case in which it was called upon. This article does not critically examine the Theory, but critically examines its use. The extensive review of the vast literature presented here on the subject reveals how the model has been often applied to provide ad hoc explanations for a range of poorly understood observations based on incomplete evidence of deep-seated processes. Our aim is to illustrate a paradigmatic example of how earth scientists, in the face of evidence that challenges our capacity of understanding, often recur to hypotheses based on other hypotheses. Such an approach may induce researchers to look for confirmation in the absence of compelling constraints, or even in the face of conflicting evidence. The faith in models should not lead us to confuse speculative theories with axiomatic truths, and to build upon them theoretical edifices that are vulnerable and exposed to the risk of circular reasoning.

  • Significant advancement in Geological theories and new discoveries of natural gas in China since the 11th Five-Year Plan
    Natural Gas Geoscience, 2019
Co-Authors: Jian Li, Wei Yang, Caiyuan Dong, Wei Ma
    Abstract:

Abstract The development of geologic theories and exploration findings of natural gas in China supplement each other. Since the 11th Five-Year Plan in 2006–2010, geologic theories of natural gas in China has achieved notable advancement in many aspects, of which, are mainly reflected in the following seven aspects. Among them, there are two research progresses in the basic Geological Theory enumerated as follows. (1) The formation mechanisms of three types of natural gas that have been studied broadly including highly evolved coal-based source rocks, crude oil pyrolysis gas, and biogas. The cracked gas mode of coal-based source rocks, whole process hydrocarbon-generating mode of humus-type organic matter, and continuous biogas generation mode have been thoroughly advanced. (2) The Theory of genetic identification between crude oil pyrolysis gas and kerogen pyrolysis gas, aggregated crude oil pyrolysis gas and dispersed crude oil pyrolysis gas, organic and inorganic gases, coal-type gas and oil origin gas, has been enriched extensively. There are five theoretical advances in the field of hydrocarbon accumulation in large gas fields: (1) the Theory of hydrocarbon accumulation in ancient carbonate rock, “five paleo-structures control accumulation”, has been proposed innovatively; (2) the accumulation Theory of tight sandstone gas in craton basins, foreland basins, and rift basins have been well-established; (3) the accumulation mode of “three-micro conveying, near-source enrichment, and sustained preservation” for ultra-deep and weak deformation zones has been established; (4) the accumulation Theory of volcanic gas reserves in rift basins with basic elements of hydrocarbon generation troughs has been established and improved; (5) lastly, the accumulation Theory of offshore high-temperature, overpressure, and deepwater gas were methodically deepened. The development of geologic theories of natural gas has promoted many new exploration discoveries. The accumulation Theory in ancient carbonate reservoirs paved the way for the exploration of Anyue gas field in the Sichuan Basin, the largest single reserve in China. The new understanding of tight sandstone gas accumulation in the foreland thrust belt helped the first gas field discovery in the size 1 × 1012 m3 in an ultra-deep layer in the Kuqa Depression. The accumulation Theory of ultra-deep reef reservoirs has guided the exploration of Yuanba gas field, the deepest-buried reef gas field in China. The Theory of offshore hydrocarbon accumulation has led to remarkable discoveries in the South China Sea. Some of the said discoveries are the Dongfang 13-2 gas field, the largest gas field in China located in self-supported areas, and the Lingshui 17-2 gas field, which is a hundred billion cubic meters in size and is located in the deepwater exploration field.

  • New research progress of natural gas Geological theories in China during the 12th Five-Year Plan period
    Natural Gas Industry B, 2018
Co-Authors: Jian Li, Wei Yang, Shuichang Zhang, Qi Zhang, Dongliang Wang, Fudong Zhang, Honggang Cheng
    Abstract:

Abstract With the continuous deepening of natural gas exploration, the quality of discovered resources gets worse and exploration targets are getting more and more complicated, so it is necessary to develop and improve natural gas Geological theories continuously in order to tap and discover more natural gas resources. Therefore, Geological theories on the formation of large gas fields were studied during the 12th Five-Year Plan period and the following progresses were mainly achieved. (1) Gas generation modes were established of oil cracking and highly evolved coal-measure source rocks in different geologic conditions. (2) A model was set up for evaluating quantitatively the hydrocarbon expulsion and detainment of various source rocks with different abundance. (3) Natural gas genesis identification chart was built up with multiple parameters and indexes. (4) Two carbonate rock sedimentation patterns and two tight sandstone sedimentation patterns were established. (5) A new method was developed for evaluating caprock–reservoir displacement pressure difference of immediate caprocks. (6) The hydrocarbon accumulation pattern of large gas fields was established and their main controlling factors and distribution laws were summarized. Then, the natural gas exploration theories were deepened in the following five fields and their application achievements are remarkable. First, the hydrocarbon-accumulation Geological Theory used for large ancient carbonate gas fields was innovatively understood to promote the discovery and confirmation of the Anyue supergiant gas field in the Sichuan Basin. Second, the hydrocarbon-accumulation Geological Theory suitable for large tight sandstone gas fields was developed to guide the exploration of tight sandstone gas in the Ordos and Songliao basins. Third, the hydrocarbon-accumulation Theory of platform margin reefs was deepened to expand the exploration of platform margin reef gas in the Sichuan Basin. Fourth, the hydrocarbon accumulation mechanism and enrichment Theory of large condensate gas reservoirs were deepened to guide the exploration of large condensate gas reservoirs in the Tarim Basin. And fifth, the exploration Theory of volcanic gas reservoirs with hydrocarbon-generation fault troughs as basic units was completed to realize the strategic replacement of volcanic gas reservoir exploration.

  • research progress in shale gas Geological Theory in china
Special Oil & Gas Reservoirs, 2012
    Co-Authors: X U Changchun
    Abstract:

With the tremendous success achieved in the exploration and development of shale gas in North America,China has sped up its shale gas research. In recent years,a large number of relevant literatures have been published, but most of the papers just focus on a certain aspect. This paper systematically summarizes and analyzes the Geological Theory of shale gas in terms of accumulation mechanism,Geological features, exploration methods, prospective area evaluation and reserves estimation. The problems in shale gas research in China are analyzed through comparison with the progress in North America, and it has been suggested that the exploration and development of shale gas in China should start from choosing areas with favorable Geological and economic conditions and then popularize the research achievements in the whole country.

  • the progress of Geological Theory and technology for unconventional oil and gas
    Earth Science Frontiers, 2014
    Co-Authors: Tong Xiaoguan
    Abstract:

Current development of oil and gas extends from conventional to unconventional that is more difficult and more expensive. In the near future,a situation will be achieved that both conventional and unconventional oil and gas will develop simultaneously.According to the cause of formation, unconventional oil and gas may be divided into three categories. The first category is the heavy oil and oil sands, which are the normal crude oil damaged by biodegradation and water washing;heavy oil and oil sands are widely distributed and highly potential;there is a lot of exploitation of them. The second category is the tight oil and gas, shale oil and gas,and coalbed methane;the main feature is the reservoir porosity and permeability in very poor conditions;they are continuous-massive accumulation reservoir;this category develops very rapid and the production grows very fast. The third category is the oil shale, which is immature kerogen mixed with clay and fine-grained inorganic minerals.Oil shale is rich in organic matter, and can generate oil by heating.Oil shale was found early and widely distributed;the highest proportion of them is in the United States. The unconventional oil and gas exploration and development led the innovation of petroleum geology Theory and technology.Meanwhile, unconventional resources are very huge, equivalent to 2-3times of the conventional oil and gas resources;the exploration and development technologies are maturing, which greatly extends the life cycle of the oil industry, leading the petroleum industry to a great-leap-forward development.
