    Georg Cantor (1845-1918) was born, and spent the first 11 years of his life in St. Petersburg. The present lecture is devoted to his childhood and his family. Most of these documents were not available before and are now published for the first time.

    Georg Cantor (1845–1918) ist vor allem bekannt fur sei1 ne grundlegenden Arbeiten zur modernen Mengenlehre 2 sowie fur die Grundung der DMV im Jahr 1890. Er wur3 de in St. Petersburg geboren und lebte dort bis zu seinem 4 12. Lebensjahr. Dieser Beitrag widmet sich seiner Kind5 heit und seiner Familiengeschichte, die wir aus Briefen 6 und aus deutschen Archiven kennen. Es gibt ausgezeich7 nete Arbeiten uber Cantor, sein Leben und seine Arbei8 ten von A. Frenkel, H. Meschkovski, I. Grattan-Guinness, 9 I.-W. Dauben, W. Purkert, H.J. Ilgauds und A.-M. Decail10 lot. Aber einige Informationen uber Cantors Herkunft 11 und Familie waren ihm selbst unbekannt. In den Archi12 ven von St. Petersburg habe ich viele interessante Infor13 mationen uber das Leben seiner Familie gefunden. Die 14 meisten Dokumente waren bisher nicht zuganglich und 15 werden nun zum ersten Mal veroffentlicht. Seine Familie 16 war bemerkenswert. Es gab acht Violinisten, zwei Profes17 soren (Violine und Recht), Damen des Kaiserlichen Ho18 fes, Handler und Maler. 19

    Abstract:

    Despite some studies by the historian Wilhelm Lorey, Edmund Kulp is rather unknown today. His role in the development of mathematics and mathematics teaching in the nineteenth century, however, deserves closer attention. Having been the director of the hohere Gewerbe—und Realschule in Darmstadt, he can be counted among the founders of the Technische Hochschule Darmstadt. Moreover, he had been, still at the Realschule, the mathematics teacher of Georg Cantor. Recently detected documents concerning Kulp’s mathematical formation in Brussels by A. Quetelet permit revealing insights into the evolution of Kulp’s mathematical ideas and of his views on the context of mathematics in Germany. The contribution presents extracts from these documents (in French) and analyses them. Furthermore, the paper discusses possible influences exerted by Kulp on Cantor.

    Wahrend Ihres ganzen mathematischen Studiums und insbesondere in diesem Skriptum werden Sie standig mit Mengen und Abbildungen zu tun haben. In einem gewohnlichen mathematischen Lehrbuch kommen diese Begriffe buchstablich tausende Male im Text vor. Die Begriffe selber sind ganz einfach zu verstehen; schwieriger wird es erst, wenn wir (ab § 2) uns damit beschaftigen werden, was in der Mathematik mit Mengen und Abbildungen denn nun eigentlich gemacht wird. — Zunachst also zu den Mengen. Von Georg Cantor, dem Begrunder der Mengenlehre, stammt die Formulierung: „Eine Menge ist eine Zusammenfassung bestimmter wohlunterschiedener Objekte unserer Anschauung oder unseres Denkens — welche die Elemente der Menge genannt werden — zu einem Ganzen.“

  • The influence of Spinoza’s concept of infinity on Cantor’s set theory

    Abstract:

    Abstract Georg Cantor, the founder of set theory, cared much about a philosophical foundation for his theory of infinite numbers. To that end, he studied intensively the works of Baruch de Spinoza. In the paper, we survey the influence of Spinozean thoughts onto Cantor’s; we discuss Spinoza’s philosophy of infinity, as it is contained in his Ethics; and we attempt to draw a parallel between Spinoza’s and Cantor’s ontologies. Our conclusion is that the study of Spinoza provides deepening insights into Cantor’s philosophical theory, whilst Cantor can not be called a ‘Spinozist’ in any stricter sense of that word.
