Water Desalination using Geothermal Energy

Specific case studies are presented, as well as an assessment of environmental risks and market potential and barriers to growth. The availability and suitability of low and high temperature Geothermal Energy in comparison to other renewable Energy resources for desalination is also discussed. Analysis will show, for example, that the use of Geothermal Energy for thermal desalination can be justified only in the presence of cheap Geothermal reservoirs or in decentralized applications focusing on small-scale water supplies in coastal regions, provided that society is able and willing to pay for desalting.

FaizAbstract:Abstract In the beginning of this new century, the rational use of Energy becomes a keyword for the world sustainable development both in developed and developing countries. Geothermal resources have the potential of contributing significantly to sustainable Energy use in many parts of the world. Geothermal Energy has been used commercially for about one century and its large-scale utilization (hundreds of MW) started about 40 years ago, both for electricity generation and for direct application as space heating and combined with heat pumps. The technology, reliability, economics, and environmental acceptability of direct use of Geothermal Energy have been demonstrated throughout the world. The aim of the present article is to investigate the contribution of Geothermal Energy to global Energy demand and utilization of Geothermal Energy.

Current Geothermal Energy Potential in Turkey and Use of Geothermal Energy
Energy Sources Part B-economics Planning and Policy, 2006Co-Authors: Mustafa BalatAbstract:Turkey is the seventh-richest country in the world in Geothermal potential. The first Geothermal researches and investigations in Turkey started by the Turkey Mineral Research and Exploration Institute (MTA) in the 1960s. Upon this, 170 Geothermal fields have been discovered by MTA, in which 95% of them are low-medium enthalpy fields, which are suitable mostly for direct-use applications. The overall Geothermal potential in Turkey is about 38,000 MW. Of this potential, around 88% is appropriate for thermal use (temperature less than 473 K) and the remainder is appropriate for electricity production (temperature more than 473 K). Turkey has extended its involvement in Geothermal Energy projects, supported by loans from the Ministry of Environment, and Geothermal Energy is expected to increase substantially in the coming years. Overall, Turkey has an estimated 4,500 MW of Geothermal power production potential.

Environmental friendly is also one of the advantages of Geothermal Energy. In general, not all countries have the potential of Geothermal Energy, only countries traversed by the ring of fire have the Geothermal Energy resource. As one of the countries that traversed by the world׳s ring of fire, Indonesia hence holds the Geothermal potential, which is indicated by the existing 117 active volcanoes spread across the country. Indonesia׳s Geothermal Energy potential is estimated about 40% of the world׳s Geothermal Energy potential or about 28,617MW. However, only about 4.5% is being utilized as electrical Energy in the country. The government of Indonesia is continuously putting the effort to increase the capacity of Geothermal power plant. It is planned to install more Geothermal power plant in Indonesia that amounted up to 9500MW by 2025.
