patent laws product life cycle lengths and multinational activity
The American Economic Review, 2014Co-Authors: Kamran L BilirAbstract:Do intellectual property rights influence multinationals’ manufactur ing location decisions? My theoretical model indicates that countries with strong patent laws attract multinational activity, but only in sectors with relatively long product life cycles. By contrast, firms with short life-cycle technologies are insensitive, because offshore imitation is less likely to succeed before obsolescence. I document strong empirical regularities consistent with the model using a panel dataset on the Global Operations of US-based multinational firms and a new measure of product obsolescence. Moreover, my identification strategy allows me to isolate the causal effect of patent laws on multinational activity. (JEL D92, F23, K11, L60, O34, R32)

use of Global interactions in efficient quantum circuit constructions
New Journal of Physics, 2018Co-Authors: D. Maslov, Yunseong NamAbstract:The disclosure describes various aspects of techniques for using Global interactions in efficient quantum circuit constructions. More specifically, this disclosure describes ways to use a Global entangling operator to efficiently implement circuitry common to a selection of important quantum algorithms. The circuits may be constructed with Global Ising entangling gates (e.g., Global Molmer-Sorenson gates or GMS gates) and arbitrary addressable single-qubit gates. Examples of the types of circuits that can be implemented include stabilizer circuits, Toffoli-4 gates, Toffoli-n gates, quantum Fourier transformation (QTF) circuits, and quantum Fourier adder (QFA) circuits. In certain instances, the use of Global Operations can substantially improve the entangling gate count.

use of Global interactions in efficient quantum circuit constructions
arXiv: Quantum Physics, 2017Co-Authors: D. Maslov, Yunseong NamAbstract:In this paper we study the ways to use a Global entangling operator to efficiently implement circuitry common to a selection of important quantum algorithms. In particular, we focus on the circuits composed with Global Ising entangling gates and arbitrary addressable single-qubit gates. We show that under certain circumstances the use of Global Operations can substantially improve the entangling gate count.

sustainable Global Operations management and frugal innovative sustainable production methods advancing theory and practice for a truly sustainable society
Sustainable Production and Consumption, 2017Co-Authors: Nachiappan Subramanian, Angappa Gunasekaran, Charbel Jose Chiappetta Jabbour, Yahaya Yusuf, Adisa AzapagicAbstract:This editorial aims to introduce the relevance of the special issue and summarize the major contributions of the accepted papers. In addition, it proposes a research framework that could serve as a pointer for future researchers to proceed with further research challenges in the field of Global Operations management in terms of a need for advancing theory and frugal innovative production methods for achieving a sustainable society.

performance measures and metrics in logistics and supply chain management a review of recent literature 1995 2004 for research and applications
International Journal of Production Research, 2007Co-Authors: Angappa Gunasekaran, Bulent KobuAbstract:Performance measures and metrics are essential for effectively managing logistics Operations, particularly in a competitive Global economy. The Global economy is featured with Global Operations, outsourcing and supply chain and e-commerce. The real challenge for managers of this new enterprise environment is to develop suitable performance measures and metrics to make right decisions that would contribute to an improved organizational competitiveness. Now the question is whether traditional performance measures can be used and out of them which ones should be given priority for measuring the performance in a new enterprise environment. Some of the traditional measures and metrics may not be suitable for the new environment wherein many activities are not easily identifiable. Measuring intangibles and nonfinancial performance measures pose the greater challenge in the so-called knowledge economy. Nevertheless, measuring them is so critical for the successful Operations of companies in this environment. Con...

information systems in supply chain integration and management
European Journal of Operational Research, 2004Co-Authors: Angappa Gunasekaran, Eric W T NgaiAbstract:Supply chain management (SCM) is the 21st century Global Operations strategy for achieving organizational competitiveness. Companies are attempting to find ways to improve their flexibility and responsiveness and in turn competitiveness by changing their Operations strategy, methods and technologies that include the implementation of SCM paradigm and information technology (IT). However, a thorough and critical review of literature is yet to be carried out with the objective of bringing out pertinent factors and useful insights into the role and implications of IT in SCM. In this paper, the literature available on IT in SCM have been classified using suitable criteria and then critically reviewed to develop a framework for studying the applications of IT in SCM. Based on this review and analysis, recommendations have been made regarding the application of IT in SCM and some future research directions are indicated.
