The conservation value of suburban Golf Courses in a rapidly urbanising region of Australia

Terrestrial vertebrate assemblages were compared between Golf Courses and nearby eucalypt fragments and with suburban bird assemblages. Biotic diversity varied among Golf Courses. While some had conservation value (supporting high densities of regionally threatened vertebrates), most failed to realise that potential, supporting only common urban-adapted species. Golf Courses were generally a better refuge for threatened birds and mammals than for threatened reptiles and amphibians. Reasons for the relative absence of threatened herpetofauna are currently unclear but could be attributed to increased sensitivity to isolation, exposure to herbicides or greater disruption of ground-level habitats. While species-specific studies are required to identify the ecological role played by habitats on Golf Courses and the potential for long-term viability, the results confirm that suburban Golf Courses can have local conservation value for threatened vertebrates. Given their ubiquity, Golf Courses present a significant opportunity for urban wildlife conservation. Thus while the Golf industry is making genuine attempts to improve its environmental management standards, it is important to ensure those efforts target the needs of regionally threatened species. Legislation may be required to ensure ecological criteria are incorporated in new Golf developments. The high densities observed on some green-space areas may however be attributed to external influences. Localised efforts to enhance the habitat value of urban green-space areas may therefore have little more than a cosmetic effect. This study investigated environmental factors influencing bird, reptile, mammal and amphibian diversity on Australian Golf Courses to assess the efficacy of small-scale conservation efforts. Abundance and species richness did not simply reflect local habitat qualities but were instead, partly determined by the nature of the surrounding landscape (i.e. the area of adjacent built land, native vegetation and the number of connecting streams). Vertebrate abundance and species richness were however, also associated with on-site habitat characteristics, increasing with the area of native vegetation (all vertebrates), foliage height diversity and native grass cover (birds), tree density, native grass cover and the number of hollows (mammals), woody debris, patch width and canopy cover (reptiles), waterbody heterogeneity and aquatic vegetation complexity (frogs). Localised conservation efforts on small land types can benefit urban-avoiding wildlife. Urban green-space areas can provide refuge to urban-avoiding vertebrates provided combined efforts are made at patch (management), local (design) and landscape (planning) scales.

water quality impacts by Golf Courses
Journal of Environmental Quality, 1999Co-Authors: Stuart Z Cohen, Amelia Svrjcek, Tom Durborow, Lajan N BarnesAbstract:Interest in water quality impacts by Golf Courses has grown significantly since the late 1980s due mostly to the local permitting process. Results from permit-driven studies are frequently not published. Seventeen studies (36 Golf Courses) passed our review criteria and were incorporated into a detailed data review. A total of 16 587 data points from pesticide, metabolite, solvent, and NO 3 analyses of surface water and ground water were reviewed. There were approximately 90 organics analyzed in the surface water database and approximately 115 organics in the ground water database. Widespread and/or repeated water quality impacts by Golf Courses are not happening at the sites studied. None of the authors of the individual studies concluded that toxicologically significant impacts were observed, although HALL MCLs, or MACs were occasionally exceeded. The individual pesticide database entries that exceeded HALs/MCLs for ground water and surface water were 0.07 and 0.29%, respectively. The percentages would be somewhat higher if they could be expressed in terms of samples collected rather than chemicals analyzed. The MCL (10 mg/ L) for nitrate-nitrogen (NO 3 -N) in surface water was not exceeded, and only 31/849 (3.6%) of the samples exceeded the MCL in ground water; however, most of the NO 3 MCL exceedances were apparently due to prior agricultural land use. There was a slight trend for detected pesticides to be more persistent and more mobile than pesticides that were not detected, but the trend was not statistically significant. There are major data gaps in this review, particularly in the midcontinent area.

Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, 1998Co-Authors: Scott C Ryals, Mary Beth Genter, R B LeidyAbstract:The Golf course industry has become increasingly aware of potential problems related to pesticide and fertilizer movement from soil into surface water and groundwater. Recently, the industry has started to change application practices and pesticide formulations and to participate in routine monitoring studies. Three southeastern North Carolina Golf Courses agreed to participate in a surface water quality study to determine the movement of fertilizers and related pesticides into surface waters. All three Golf Courses have ponds that provide irrigation water, from which samples were collected every two weeks. Each course has a sandy loam soil and adjoins wetlands, saline marshes, or elevated water tables. The data indicate that impact to the surface waters from the Courses was minimal. Of the four pesticides (atrazine, chlorothalonil [Daconil®], chlorpyrifos [Dursban®], and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) and two nutrients (nitrogen and phosphate) surveyed, only 16 samples exceeded the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's health advisory levels. All analyses of the samples collected from the outflows of the Courses were below their detectable levels.

Golf Courses as habitat for aquatic turtles in urbanized landscapes

We assessed whether Golf course wetlands could provide habitat refuges for freshwater turtles, which are threatened worldwide by wetland loss and degradation associated with urbanization. In 2009 and 2010 we examined populations of snapping turtles (Chelydra serpentina) and painted turtles (Chrysemys picta) and their habitats in 88 wetlands near Syracuse, New York, USA in Golf Courses, urban areas, and wildlife refuges. We tested two null hypotheses: (1) Golf Courses provide habitats comparable to nearby urban and protected areas, and (2) turtle populations in these contexts are comparable. Golf course wetlands were surrounded by low road density and were distinct from protected area wetlands only in that they were surrounded by less forest and grassland and had more homogenous aquatic plant communities. In terms of turtle populations, relative abundance was equivalent in protected area and Golf course wetlands and female fraction was closer to parity in Golf course wetlands. Painted turtles were of similar size across contexts and snapping turtles were smaller in urban and Golf course contexts. Additionally, male turtles in Golf Courses were relatively heavier and both species had less severe indicators of poor health. Golf course wetlands apparently supported viable turtle populations similar to those observed in protected areas in the region. Nevertheless, turtle habitat on Golf Courses can be improved by increasing the area of wetlands, increasing their shape complexity, promoting vegetative diversity in and around wetlands, and increasing surrounding forest and grassland.
