  • Revisiting Post Graduate Diploma for Teaching (PGDT) In-service Trainee Teachers’ Lived-experiences of Teaching Practice
    International Journal of Research, 2018
    Co-Authors: Yismaw Nigussie
    Abstract:

This paper focuses on a qualitative phenomenological study concerned with revisiting the lived experience of Post Graduate Diploma in Teaching (PGDT ) summer in-service novice teacher trainees on teaching practicum as a fundamental component of teacher education in Ethiopia, Bahir Dar University, College of Education and Behavioral Sciences. It addresses some of the issues and concerns associated with major challenges encountered by teaching practice practitioners in secondary schools like the incompatibility between theory and practice, workload, ill-defined mentoring support, poor collaboration between the college and partner schools and implementation of certain pedagogical orientations during teaching practicum placement. Purposive sampling was used to select participants. Data were collected through semi-structured and in-depth open interviews. The findings indicate that trainee teachers undergo varied and often challenging experiences during teaching practicum. To counter some of the concerns, suggestions are made to improve certain aspects of teaching practicum. There is need for realistic school-college partnerships, improved structures of school-based professional support, revising the framework of PGDT and a deeper awareness of the complexity of learner-centered pedagogy and classroom management. It is imperative that teacher educators engage with these findings to further improve the design of teaching practicum and the overall quality of teacher education and teaching in Amhara Regional State secondary schools, in Ethiopia.

  • An Insight into teacher self-efficacy belief of PGDT (Post Graduate Diploma in Teaching) Trainees: Implications for Ethiopian Secondary School Teacher Education Program
    2019
    Co-Authors: Melkamu Habte Alemayehu
    Abstract:

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to examine the state of PGDT (Post Graduate Diploma in Teaching) trainees’ self-efficacy beliefs and the factors that contributed to its development with particular emphasis to PGDT trainees of Dilla University. The participants included 112 PGDT trainees who were selected using stratified random sampling. Quantitative data was collected through questionnaire which was eventually analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics such as independent sample t-test, one sample t-test, one way ANOVA and Multiple Linear Regression. The finding indicated that trainees have marginally average level of efficacy. It was also found that attitude to teaching (β= .573, t=10.129, p

Quantitative data was collected through questionnaire which was eventually analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics such as independent sample t-test, one sample t-test, one way ANOVA and Multiple Linear Regression. The finding indicated that trainees have marginally average level of efficacy. It was also found that attitude to teaching (β= .573, t=10.129, p<.05) was the biggest contributor to self-efficacy belief followed by school climate in secondary schools measured in terms of teachers’ professional collaboration (β= .198, t= 5.276, p<.05) and in-campus training practice (β= .146, t=3.201, p<.05) respectively. Compared to males, females had low sel-efficacy beliefs. In contrast to popular expectations, the study additionally revealed that there was no significant mean difference in trainees’ efficacy scores in terms of their CGPA. Interestingly, teaching experience before PGDT training negatively contributed to self-efficacy belief (β= -.070, t=-1.995, p< .05). Based on these major findings, it was concluded that trainees’ efficacy with regard to bringing desired impact on secondary school students’ achievement and behavior was not adequate and requires immediate attention. Finally, it was recommended that Graduates should be given on-job training and teachers’ professional collaboration in Ethiopian secondary schools should be further strengthened.

    World Journal of Education, 2020
Co-Authors: Pairote Boriboon, Chalard Chantarasombut, Pha Agsonsua
    Abstract:

The objectives of this research were to: 1) study the current and desirable situations of supervision for Graduate Diploma in teaching profession program, 2 develop the internal supervision model using professional learning community for educational supervisor of Graduate Diploma in teaching profession program, and 3) evaluate the efficiency of the developed model. The samples were 49 educational supervisors and committees of Graduate Diploma in teaching profession program. The instrument was handbook of internal supervision model developed by using the professional learning community. Statistics used were percentage, mean, standard deviation, modified priority needs index, efficiency index, and t-test for dependent samples. The finding srevealed that:   1) The current situation of internal supervision of Graduate Diploma in teaching profession program was in “High” level.  In addition, the desirable situation was found in the“Highest” level. When considering each aspect, it was found that the aspect with highest emergency need for development was the planning with the PNImodified of 0.40. The second one was the implementing with the PNImodified of 0.36. 2) The developed model was evaluated in the “Highest” level in terms of the propriety, feasibility, and utility. It was integrated in 6 steps including: (1) Preparing, (2) Planning, (3) Implementing, (4) Reflecting, Improvement, and Evaluation, (5) Reinforcing, and (6) Concluding and Reporting. 3) The results of the trials were: (3.1) The efficiency of process and product (E1 / E2) were84.67/ 83.00 which was higher than the specified criterion 80/80. (3.2) The posttest score was significantly higher than the pretest one at level of p-value
