  • the effect of nocturnal shutter on insulated Greenhouse using a solar air heater with latent storage energy
    Solar Energy, 2015
Co-Authors: Sami Kooli, Salwa Bouadila, Mariem Lazaar, Abdelhamid Farhat
    Abstract:

Abstract In order to reduce the energy consumption in agricultural Greenhouses at night, two similar Greenhouses with a nocturnal shutter are constructed and installed in the CRTEn (Research and Technologies Centre of Energy) in Tunisia. The first is equipped with a heating system. The solar heating system is a solar air heater collector with latent heat storage. At daytime, thermal solar energy is stored, however, at night it can be restored. Moreover, the shutter is used only at night. The analysis of the thermal energy is used to examine the repartition of the absorbed, the useful, the stored and the losses of energy in the Greenhouse; with or without nocturnal shutter. The balances of the various components of the Greenhouse are used to study the portions of the energy recovered, absorbed, stored and lost. The experimentally obtained results show that: the nocturnal variations of temperature inside the two Greenhouses exceed 2 °C between the first (with shutter) and the second one (without). Also, the nocturnal temperature inside the Greenhouse equipped with solar heating system was maintained to 15 °C while the outside temperature decreases to 8 °C.

  • assessment of the Greenhouse climate with a new packed bed solar air heater at night in tunisia
Renewable & Sustainable Energy Reviews, 2014
Co-Authors: Salwa Bouadila, Sami Kooli, Mariem Lazaar, Safa Skouri, Abdelhamid Farhat
    Abstract:

Abstract The use of solar energy for heating Greenhouses in the cold period for a Mediterranean climate is an important issue. In this paper, the thermal performance of a new solar air heater using a packed bed of spherical capsules with the latent heat storage system in east–west oriented Greenhouse, is analyzed and discussed. The excess heat in the Greenhouse was stored in the packed bed through the diurnal period and extracted at night. An experimental comparative study was conducted in two Greenhouses installed in the Research and Technologies Centre of Energy (CRTEn) in Tunisia. The Greenhouse heat balance in different components of the Greenhouse with a heating system (cover, canopy, soil, inside air and packed bed solar collector), has been used to investigate the impact of the phase change material (PCM) on the Greenhouse temperature and humidity. Results show that the nocturnal temperature inside the Greenhouse equipped by a heating system exceeds the temperature inside the conventional Greenhouse by 5 °C. The relative humidity was found to be of an average 10–20% lower at night time inside the heated Greenhouse. The nighttime recovered heat of the solar system attained 31% of the total requirements of heating. An economic evaluation was made to find the payback period of the new solar air heater, the potential in saving fuel energy and the reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

  • improvement of the Greenhouse climate using a solar air heater with latent storage energy
    Energy, 2014
Co-Authors: Salwa Bouadila, Sami Kooli, Mariem Lazaar, Safa Skouri, Abdelhamid Farhat
    Abstract:

Abstract The use of latent heat to Greenhouse heating in winter days is an important issue. The storage of the excess heat in Greenhouses for sunny days in cold season is necessary with the increasingly up of the fossil fuel cost. In this research, we used two identical Greenhouses. One, uses a latent heat system for heating, constructed and installed in the CRTEn (Research and Technologies Centre of Energy) in Tunisia. This heating system consists of a new solar air heater collector using a packed bed of spherical capsules with phase change materials. The solar air heater was inserted inside a Greenhouse planted with tomato plants and operated during the winter season. The nighttime recovered heat of this system attained 30% of the total requirements of heating.

    Co-Authors: A. Bazgaou, K. Ezzaeri, R. Bouharroud, L. Gourdo, A. Wifaya, H. Demrati, Hicham Fatnassi, Fouad Elame, R Tiskatine, A. Bekkaoui
    Abstract:

Abstract During the winter period, in Mediterranean region, the storage and reuse of solar energy in thermal form is an important issue for heating Greenhouses. In the present work, the performance of a combination of two systems i.e. rock-bed thermal energy storage and water filled passive solar, for heating canarian Greenhouse was analyzed and discussed. The surplus thermal energy available inside the Greenhouse was stored in the rock-bed and in the water during daytime for use during cold periods. An experimental study was carried out in two Canarian-type Greenhouses, the first is equipped with the combined heating system and the second without. Results show that the combined heating system can improve the nocturnal inside air temperature, during the winter period, by 3–5 °C during clear days and by 2–3 °C in cloudy/rainy days with less fluctuations. A reduction of 10–15% in the air relative humidity was observed in the heated Greenhouse during the night. This heating system also improves the substrate temperature during the night by 4 °C on cloudless days and 3 °C on cloudy/rainy days. A very good growth of plants and an increase of 49% of tomato yield has been noted in the heated Greenhouse. The thermal energy restored by this system covers a large part of the Greenhouse heating requirements. It was also noted that the presence of this heating system lead to a decrease in the development the population of Tuta absoluta in the heated Greenhouse. An economic analysis revealed that this system is very profitable and could generate profits for farmers.

  • heating canarian Greenhouse with a passive solar water sleeve system effect on microclimate and tomato crop yield
    Solar Energy, 2019
    Co-Authors: L. Gourdo, K. Ezzaeri, R. Bouharroud, A. Bazgaou, A. Wifaya, H. Demrati, A. Aharoune, A. Bekkaoui, Hicham Fatnassi, C Poncet
    Abstract:

Abstract Heating Greenhouses is indispensable for plant development particularly in winter when air temperature is lower. In that sense, passive solar heating is a promising alternative compared to classic methods such as fossil fuels that are cost impacted and harmful to the environment. The current work is devoted to the study of the effect of a solar heating system using black plastic sleeves filled with water on the microclimate, tomato yield and the dynamic population of the tomato key pest, Tuta absoluta ( Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae ) in canarian Greenhouses. The results show that the use of this heating system, improves the nighttime temperature inside the Greenhouse by 3.1 °C and reduce by 10% the relative humidity compared to the control Greenhouse. This microclimate improvement has a positive impact on the tomato production. It has increased by 35% compared to the control Greenhouse. It was also noted that the presence of this heating system lead to a decrease in the development the population of T. absoluta in the heated Greenhouse. Based on these results, the solar passive water–sleeve heating system can be an eco-friendly tool to prevent intensive use of fuel fossil and negative effect on the environment.

  • The effect of photovoltaic panels on the microclimate and on the tomato production under photovoltaic canarian Greenhouses
    Solar Energy, 2018
    Co-Authors: K. Ezzaeri, R. Bouharroud, L. Gourdo, A. Bazgaou, A. Wifaya, H. Demrati, A. Aharoune, A. Bekkaoui, Hicham Fatnassi, Charles Poncet
    Abstract:

Photovoltaic Greenhouses are mixed systems, combining electricity and agricultural production in the same area. Moreover, this type of Greenhouse conserves all the properties of a conventional Greenhouse, as well as offering the possibility of producing and selling electricity. The aim of the present study is to assess both the impact of the shade caused by the photovoltaic panels on the microclimate and the quality of fruits in the Greenhouse. Measurements were carried out in an experimental Canary type Greenhouse covered with flexible photovoltaic panels on 10% of its total roof area. Results illustrate that this occupancy rate of the photovoltaic panels arranged in checkerboard pattern does not have a significant effect on the agronomic parameters e.g. height, stem diameter and tomato yield, and climatic parameters under the Greenhouse cover. Additionally, the presence of photovoltaic panels has a negative effect on the development of the population of Tuta absoluta.
