Here the influence of temperature, salinity and depth on the distribution of S. Guggenheim in the Southwest Atlantic was analyzed. The species–habitat associations were evaluated for the S. Guggenheim population as a whole as well as segregated by sex and by size classes (group 1, 23–44 cm; group 2, 45–74 cm; group 3, 75–91 cm L T ). Sampling took place during four bottom trawl surveys conducted in the Argentine–Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (AUCFZ) during spring (October 1997) and fall (March 1997, March–April 1998, May–June 1998). The sharks were captured using an Engel bottom trawl and the hydrographical information was obtained using a CTD. Bottom depth was measured with an echo-sounder. The distribution of the population was affected ( P  ≤ 0.05) by temperature during spring and fall, while it was affected by salinity only in spring. S. Guggenheim showed preference for temperatures ranging from 7.0 to 18.5 °C and salinity values ranging from 33.4 to 33.8. Generally, the distribution of males was affected ( P  ≤ 0.05) by temperature during both seasons, while females were influenced by temperature only in spring. The distribution of both sexes was affected by salinity in spring but not in fall. The distribution of adults sharks (group 3) was more affected by temperature and salinity than that of juveniles sharks (groups 1 and 2). Depth had no effects on the distribution of adults (males or females); however, juveniles belonging to size-group 2 were associated with depth during both spring and fall. High population catches were associated to thermal fronts during all surveys suggesting that these oceanographic structures play an important role as feeding areas for S. Guggenheim . A population strategy of spatial segregation by size was proposed and discussed.

    A total of 1280 (670 females and 610 males) Squatina Guggenheim, an angel shark endemic to the south-west Atlantic, was caught during five research cruises (1995, 1997 and 1998) carried out in the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (AUCFZ) at depths of 3·5–266 m. All angel sharks captured were sexed and measured. Of the 947 examined for stomach contents, 556 (58·7%) contained food and 391 (41·3%) were empty. Numerically, bony fishes were the principal dietary component (89·7%), followed by crustaceans (4·8%) and molluscs (4·4%). The most important prey species were Engraulis anchoita (58·3%), shrimps (4·4%) and Ilex argentinus (2·3%). Male and female diets were not found to differ significantly (P > 0·01), however, the diets of different size classes showed significant differences (P ≤ 0·01) (group 1, 23–44, group 2, 45–74 and group 3, 75–91 cm LT). Low rates of cannibalism were observed. The spatial and seasonal variability in the trophodynamics of S. Guggenheim is discussed.

    The occurrence of changes in the trophic level (TL) of sharks with growth has not been quantified until now. Here length-related changes on Squatina Guggenheim Marini trophic level were determined, and shifts in type, size and trophic level of its prey were analysed. Sampling took place during five bottom trawl surveys conducted in the Argentine–Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone during spring (December/1995, October/1997) and fall (March/1997, March–April/1998, May–June/1998), using an Engel bottom-trawl net to capture the sharks. Three length groups were defined based on diet composition and using a cluster analysis (group I, 23–60 cm; group II, 61–80 cm; group III, 81–91 cm L T). An ANOSIM procedure detected significant differences (P 30% of their own length. The increase of mean prey weight was associated with the increase of predator weight and length. Smallest sharks (group I) were identified as secondary consumers (TL 4). The study revealed an increase in S. Guggenheim TL with shark growth as a consequence of changes on type, size and TL of prey ingested.

    The multilayer adsorption models of Brunauer-Emmett-Teller and Guggenheim-Anderson-de Boer are reconsidered. The relationship between the fitting parameters and the physical parameters of the equation is discussed. The preexponential factors of the parameters are shown to be in general far different from unity, contrary to a widespread use. A thermodynamical derivation illuminates the hypothesis on which the multilayer sorption equation is dependent and frees it from too restrictive hypothesis usually taken as necessary for its validity. Equations are derived for the number fraction of sorption sites occupied by different numbers of molecules. The Guggenheim-Anderson-de Boer equation is shown to imply incomplete occupation (jamming) of the first sorption layer at saturation.

    Abstract:

    Even if museums in the past were created for cultural purposes, many recently created museums have appeared which serve the purpose as motors for economic regeneration and the diversification of cities and urban areas. The case of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao is perhaps the best known example and, at the same time, one of the most successful ones with regard to the attraction of visitors and the creation of tourism. However, if museums of this kind were to be successful, their effectiveness as engines for economic urban development would not come automatically but would depend on a series of geographic, social, economic, managerial, and cultural conditions. This article describes the current situation of academic research on the topic of museums as economic re-activators and analyses a series of conditions for effectiveness, based on the example of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.

    Bilbao has gained fame with the Guggenheim Museum, even in the Academic world. Google Scholar yields 2610 outcomes for “Bilbao Guggenheim” and the number of articles published in ISI-WoK listed-journals is 93 up until today. Surprisingly, however, almost 80% of these articles have been published by foreign authors, whereas many prestigious local authors have little or almost no scientific production in the ISI listed journals. This article analyses the connexions between nationality, language and publications, and offers an explanation for the disproportion between foreign and local knowledge, which causes mistaken scientific and public opinions about the “Guggenheim-Effect”.

    The mission of a museum is essentially cultural, however this is not the case for all museums. There are a minority of universally famous museums, like the Tate Liverpool, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the Tate Modern London, the new forthcoming Louvre-Lens (France), the Guggenheim-Hermitage in Vilnius (Lithuania) and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates) whose principal aim is the re-activation (and/or the diversification) of the economy of their territories, in addition to the obvious cultural aim. The effectiveness of a large heritage investment in developing a city depends on at least four variables. First, heritage investments become effective employment creators only to the extent that they become effective tourism magnets. Second, the impact of investments on cultural heritage could be negative if the heritage industry is a big portion of the whole economy. Third, the more the redevelopment zone's markets are integrated, the easier the absorption of price tensions caused by urban revitalization. Fourth, the greater the productivity of the city's economy, the greater the absorption of price tensions. The aim of this essay is to give empirical support to these hypotheses for the case of Bilbao and the Guggenheim Museum. Copyright (c) 2008 The Author.     When a decaying industrial city in Spain’s Basque country decided in the 1990s to spend $228.3 million on a modern art museum, critics objected to squandering so much public money on something so irrelevant and exclusive. This year is the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao’s (GMB) tenth anniversary, sufficient time since its opening to evaluate the museum’s effectiveness in reactivating the city’s economy. So, have the public authorities that invested in the Guggenheim recovered their costly investment?
