    Abstract:

    Abstract A new column association using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography for the detailed molecular analysis of hydrocarbon mixtures is reported in this paper. In order to compare the impact of two different secondary columns, a novel column combination relying on a GC × 2GC system was used. This system is based on a non-polar first column (PONA) combined with both a permethylated β-cyclodextrin (β-Dex 120) stationary phase and a polysilphenylensiloxane (BPX 50) in the second dimension. Compared to BPX 50 stationary phase, the implementation of β-cyclodextrin columns as the second dimension was found to improve the resolution between paraffins and naphthenes in the Naphtha range but not in the middle distillate range. Attempts to improve the results and to understand the interaction mechanism remained unsuccessful. Therefore, the benefits of the β-Dex 120-column are only demonstrated on Heavy Naphtha cut for the quantitation of hydrocarbons.

    Abstract:

    A multidimensional method providing the composition of a Heavy Naphtha in paraffins, isoparaffins, olefins, naphthenes, and aromatics (PIONA) in the C8-C14 range is presented. The analytical set-up consists in a silver modified silica olefin trap on-line coupled to comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC x GC). In this configuration, hydrocarbons are separated, in gaseous state, in two fractions, saturate and unsaturate, each fraction being subsequently analysed by GC or by GC x GC. The resolution between saturates and olefins was found to be improved compared to a single GC x GC run. The characterisation of the olefin trap highlights the benefits and the limits related to the use of that stationary phase as a double bond selective fractionation medium.

    Abstract:

    In this article, the impacts of liquid properties, loading of solid phase and operating conditions on the hydrodynamic and mass transfer coefficient in a split-cylindrical airlift reactor sparged by air were investigated. The various oil-in-water micro-emulsion systems containing light Naphtha, Heavy Naphtha, kerosene and diesel were used as the liquid phase with oil concentrations of 5% and the solid phase with the loading of 0, 0.25 and 0.5 wt.%. The experimental results showed that a micro-emulsion with the lowest density, viscosity and surface tension had maximum mass transfer and gas hold-up and minimum liquid circulation velocity. The gas hold-up and mass transfer decreased and liquid circulation velocity increased by solid particles addition. Further, solid loading enhancement had a dramatic effect on the mentioned parameters. Moreover, a proper correlation based on dimensionless numbers was used to predict mass transfer in this process. A very good agreement was observed between the correlated data and the experimental ones.

    In this study, the impact of operating conditions, liquid properties and loading of a solid phase on the hydrodynamics and mass transfer coefficient in an airlift reactor with an external loop was investigated. The gas phase sparged through the reactor was air. Oil-in-water micro emulsions containing diesel, kerosene, Heavy Naphtha and light Naphtha made up the liquid phase with an oil concentration of 5%. The impact of the solid phase was studied with solid loadings of 0, 0.25 and 0.5 wt%. The results showed that light Naphtha which had the lowest density, viscosity and surface tension had the highest mass transfer and gas holdup and the lowest liquid circulation velocity. Solid addition decreased the gas holdup and mass transfer while increasing the liquid circulation velocity. This effect was considerable on the parameters above. In addition, a correlation based on dimensionless numbers was gained to predict the Sherwood number. Good agreement was observed between the correlated and experimental values.
