Cochranea that were revised in a previous contribution. These species are Heliotropium amplexicaule (sect. Heliotrophytum), H. corymbosum (sect. Heliothamnus), H. curassavicum (sect. Platygyne), H. geissei (sect. Plagiomeris), H. microstachyum (sect. Hypsogenia), H. paronychioides (sect. Plagiomeris) and H. patagonicum (sect. Platygyne). I analyze in detail the nomenclature, iconography, taxonomy, systematics, distribution and bibliography of each species. Heliotropium corymbosum is newly reported for the flora of Chile and the new combination Heliotropium corymbosum var. grisellum is herewith proposed. This taxon is illustrated for the first time. I discuss the presence of two species of Heliotropiaceae erroneously reported for the Chilean flora: Heliotropium angiospermum (sect. Schobera) and Euploca procumbens. I conclude that the family Heliotropiaceae is represented in Chile only by the genus Heliotropium with 24 species, including 17 species previously treated under sect. Cochranea. I provide a key for the determination of all Chilean species of Heliotropium.

A revision of Heliotropium sect. Cochranea (Heliotropiaceae)

Morphology, ecology, distribution, conservation status and phenology of all species are presented. One subspecies, Heliotropium krauseanum Fedde subsp. jahuayense Luebert is described as a new taxon. Two previously recognised species names, H. sclerocarpum Phil. and H. huascoense I. M. Johnst., are placed in the synonymy of H. chenopodiaceum (A. DC.) Clos and H. stenophyllum Hook. & Arn., respectively. One epitype, one neotype and one lectotype are designated here.

Heliothamnus endemic to the Andean inner valleys and the eastern and western slopes of the Peruvian Andes are described as Heliotropium maranjonense , H. pamparomasense and H. oxapampanum . Heliotropium oxapampanum is the first species of the genus described from riparian habitats in the cloud forest. Heliotropium pamparomasense is the tallest species known in the group and forms shrubs to 4 m high with huge inflorescences. Notes on diagnostic characters, distribution and illustration are provided for each species.

Diversification in the Andes: age and origins of South American Heliotropium lineages (Heliotropiaceae, Boraginales).

Hilger, Maximilian WeigendAbstract:The uplift of the Andes was a major factor for plant diversification in South America and had significant effects on the climatic patterns at the continental scale. It was crucial for the formation of the arid environments in south-eastern and western South America. However, both the timing of the major stages of the Andean uplift and the onset of aridity in western South America remain controversial. In this paper we examine the hypothesis that the Andean South American groups of Heliotropium originated and diversified in response to Andean orogeny during the late Miocene and a the subsequent development of aridity. To this end, we estimate divergence times and likely biogeographical origins of the major clades in the phylogeny of Heliotropium, using both Bayesian and likelihood methods. Divergence times of all Andean clades in Heliotropium are estimated to be of late Miocene or Pliocene ages. At least three independent Andean diversification events can be recognized within Heliotropium. Timing of the diversification in the Andean lineages Heliotropium sects.Heliothamnus, Cochranea, Heliotrophytum, Hypsogenia, Plagiomeris, Platygyne clearly correspond to a rapid, late Miocene uplift of the Andes and a Pliocene development of arid environments in South America.

Epitypification of Heliotropium arborescens L. (Heliotropiaceae)

(1759) does not permit a precise application of the name. The herbarium material associated with that illustration was examined in order to clarify the identity of the type material and an epitype was selected. The epitype corresponds in morphology to the taxon called Heliotropium urbanianum K. Krause (1906) in the recent literature, which is here lectotypified and synonymized with H. arborescens. The name Heliotropium arborescens has been misapplied to a predominantly Peruvian species, which should now be correctly called Heliotropium corymbosum Ruiz & Pav. (1799). The epitypification here proposed will ensure nomenclatural stability for most material from cultivation, where the name Heliotropium arborescens is widely used.

A systematic analysis of Heliotropium, Tournefortia, and allied taxa of the Heliotropiaceae (Boraginales) based on ITS1 sequences and morphological data.

HilgerAbstract:The relationships of Heliotropium, Tournefortia, Schleidenia, Ixorhea, and Ceballosia of the Heliotropiaceae (Boraginaceae in the traditional sense, Boraginales) are investigated using molecular data (ITS1). These genera form a monophyletic group. Five clades can be distinguished on the basis of molecular data, morphological traits, and distribution. In their current circumscription, Tournefortia is polyphyletic and Heliotropium is paraphyletic. Tournefortia section Cyphocyema is the sister group to all other ingroup taxa. Heliotropium section Orthostachys including Schleidenia sensu lato is the well supported sister group of a clade comprising the other species of Heliotropium sensu stricto (s.s.), Tournefortia section Tournefortia, and Ceballosia. Heliotropium s.s. forms two clades: one clade includes all species of the Old World and represents the only monophylum of Heliotropium s.s. The other clade consists of all Heliotropium s.s. species of the New World but also includes Tournefortia section Tournefortia and Ceballosia. The results suggest that taxonomic changes are inevitable.

The weed is native to Mediterranean and Middle Eastern regions of Eurasia where it is attacked by several arthropods and pathogens including the rust fungus Uromyces heliotropii. The host-specificity of a virulent and effective strain of the rust from Turkey has been tested by inoculating 96 plants of importance to the Australasian region using both microscopic and macroscopic observations of the reaction of host and non-host plants. The test plants included several members of the Boraginaceae and related families as well as species of Heliotropium native to Australia. The infection was mostly limited to European species of Heliotropium. U. heliotropii was thus found to represent a safe introduction and has recently been introduced to Australia for the biological control of common heliotrope.
