    Abstract:

    Soil-transmitted Helminthes are among the most common infections worldwide and affect the poorest and most deprived communities. A health facility based cross-sectional study was conducted among pregnant women attending at Maytsebri primary hospital. Data was entered and analysed using SPSS version 20 software. Multivariate analyses were used to identify determinant factors associated with soil transmitted helminthiasis. A total of 448 pregnant women were examined microscopically with a Katokatz technique for parasitological study to each women. Out of the total 448 pregnant women examined in the primary hospital, 229 (51.5%) women were infected by at least one of the soil transmitted helminthiasis. Hookworm was the most prevalent 179 (78.16%) soil transmitted Helminthes infection. Women who had a habit of eating soil were 2.6 times more likely to be infected by soil transmitted Helminthes compared to who do not eat soil. Participants who wear shoe always were 95% less likely to be infected by soil transmitted Helminthes. Efforts should be done to advance the awareness of women how to prevent soil transmitted Helminthes.

    Studies were conducted to determine the prevalence of Helminthes parasites affecting cattle slaughtered at the Wukari Local Government abattoir, in Taraba State North-Eastern Nigeria. The Standard saturated salt (NaCl) floatation technique was used, and examined microscopically to determine the parasites and the number of eggs per gram. Of the 350 samples examined 122 (34.90%) were infected with one or more intestinal Helminthes. In order of prevalence, Paramphistomum species recorded 83 (23.70%); Oesophagastomum radiatum 50 (14.30%); Fasciola gigantica 31 (8.90%); Trichuris species 28 (8.00%) and Monezia expansa 23 (6.60%).     Parasitic helminths and helminthoses do not only occur in the tropics and subtropics but are also prevalent in Austria and other Central European countries. Their prevalence is, however, more or less rather low. In total, we know more than 20 helminth species, which are diagnosed regularly in Austria; some of them occur in Austria autochthonously, some others are acquired abroad and are transferred as souvenirs to Central Europe. The spectrum of helminths described in this overview comprises species of the trematodes (flukes), cestodes (tapeworms), and nematodes (roundworms). The topic “Helminths and helminthoses in Central Europe” is divided into three parts: The first part comprises a short introduction into the field of medical helminthology and is primarily dedicated to the description of trematodes and trematode-caused diseases. Parasitisch lebende Würmer und Wurmkrankheiten kommen nicht nur in den Tropen und Subtropen, sondern auch in Mitteleuropa, und somit auch in Österreich, vor. Die Prävalenz dieser Helminthosen ist allerdings ziemlich niedrig. Insgesamt kennen wir etwas über 20 Wurmarten, die in Österreich mehr oder weniger regelmäßig diagnostiziert werden, manche davon sind in Mitteleuropa endemisch, manche werden auf Auslandsreisen erworben und als „Reiseandenken“ nach Österreich gebracht, wo die durch sie hervorgerufenen Krankheiten diagnostiziert und behandelt werden. Unter den in dieser Übersicht zusammengefassten Helminthen-Spezies finden sich Vertreter aller drei großen „Wurmgruppen“, der Trematoden (Saugwürmer, Egel), Zestoden (Bandwürmer) und Nematoden (Faden- oder Rundwürmer).     Der dritte Teil der Arbeit über „Helminthen und Helminthosen in Mitteleuropa“ befasst sich mit den medizinisch relevanten Nematodenarten und den Krankheiten, die durch Nematoden hervorgerufen werden. Die Arbeit umfasst Daten über die Biologie der Parasiten und deren Übertragung auf den Menschen, beschreibt die wichtigsten klinischen Symptome, fasst die Möglichkeiten der Diagnose und Therapie zusammen und zeigt die die wichtigsten prophylaktischen Maßnahmen auf. The third part of the overview “Helminths and helminthoses in Central Europe” deals with the medically relevant nematodes (roundworms) and nematode-caused diseases occurring in Central Europe. The paper comprises data on the biology of the parasites and their ways of transmission, describes the symptomatology of the diseases, summarizes the possibilities of diagnosis and refers to the prophylactic means.

    The second part of the overview “Helminths and helminthoses in Central Europe” is dedicated to the cestodes (tapeworms) and the diseases caused by cestodes. The overview comprises the spectrum of the most relevant species, describes their incidence, geographic distribution and the most important clinical symptoms and highlights the possibilities of diagnosis, treatment and prophylaxis of cestode-caused diseases. Der zweite Teil der Übersicht über Helminthen und Helminthosen in Mitteleuropa ist den Zestoden (Bandwürmer) gewidmet. Es werden die wichtigsten Bandwurmarten beschrieben, die in Österreich autochthon vorkommen oder die immer wieder als Ursache von Krankheiten diagnostiziert werden. Die Übersicht umfasst Daten über ihr Vorkommen und ihre Häufigkeit, es werden die Übertragungswege beschrieben, die wichtigsten klinischen Symptome und die Möglichkeiten der Diagnose, Therapie und Prophylaxe aufgezeigt.

    Schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted Helminthes infections are among the widely distributed infections worldwide. In Ethiopia, parasitic helminthic infections and schistosomiasis are among the most predominant causes of outpatient morbidity. Hence there is still lack of epidemiological information in North-Eastern Ethiopia, this study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated factors of Schistosoma mansoni and other Helminthes infections at Haike primary school children, Haike, North-East Ethiopia. The overall prevalence of S. mansoni and other Helminthes infections using formol-ether concentration technique was 85/279 (30.5%). Schistosoma mansoni was the dominant parasites as detected by both direct wet mount and formol-ether concentration technique with 44/52 (84.6%) and 65/85 (76.5%) respectively. Chi square test showed significant association between parasitic infections and age of the school children (p = 0.003). The binary logistic regression analysis was showed strong statistical association (p = 0.00) between swimming habit and parasitic infections (AOR = 6.61, 95% CI 3.31–13.12). Family used lake as source of water showed statistically significant association (AOR = 5.35, 95% CI 2.97–12.32). Furthermore, those who get water from river (AOR = 1.24, 95% CI 0.33–4.66) were more likely to be infected with S. mansoni and geo-Helminthes than those who used tap water.
