GreenbergAbstract:Abstract We examined the short term response of Herpetofauna to two treatments designed to regenerate oak in upland hardwood forest: (1) shelterwood (30–40% BA retention), and (2) oak-shelterwood (midstory removal by use of herbicide), along with controls. Research was conducted 1 and 2 years post treatment within an oak-hickory forest within the mid-Cumberland Plateau of southern Tennessee. Reptiles and amphibians were captured using drift fences equipped with double-ended funnel traps and pitfall traps. The shelterwood treatment had the least canopy cover and greatest amount of light at the forest floor relative to oak shelterwood or control. These changes were the main drivers for increasing the complexity of forest vegetation within the stands. Fowler’s toads, eastern-narrow mouthed toads, northern slimy salamanders, eastern five-lined skinks, eastern fence lizards, northern black racers and smooth earth snakes were most abundant in the shelterwood treatment. Broad-headed skinks were most abundant in oak-shelterwood stands. Amphibian and reptile species richness was higher in the shelterwood stands than in oak-shelterwood or control. Reptile diversity was higher in the shelterwood treatment than controls. No negative responses for Herpetofaunal abundance, richness, or diversity were detected in either treatment. These findings will provide forest resource managers and private forest land owners with better knowledge for conserving Herpetofaunal species when implementing these oak regeneration methods in upland hardwood forests of the Cumberland Plateau.

This research examined how microhabitat differed short-term (1-2 years after disturbance) between two different oak-regenerating shelterwood treatments, a midstory-reduction (oak-shelterwood) and a first-harvested basal area removal (shelterwood), in comparison to undisturbed controls. Mechanisms responsible for influencing Herpetofaunal communities were examined in the oak-hickory hardwood forests of the mid-Cumberland Plateau in Grundy County of Southern TN. Herpetofauna were captured using drift fences equipped with pitfall and box funnel traps, and microhabitat variables were collected at each trap location. Shelterwood stands had a higher amount of slash, slash pile volume, and woody and herbaceous vegetation than other stand types.Oak-shelterwood and control stands had higher litter depth, litter cover, and presence of overstory than shelterwood stands. Eastern fence lizards, eastern five-lined skinks, Fowler’s toads and broad-headed skinks were all significantly more abundant in stands that received manipulation in comparison to control stands.

Fire, Habitat structure and Herpetofauna in the Southeast

GreenbergAbstract:In this paper I review studies of Herpetofauna in two fire-maintained, xeric pineland southeastern U.S. ecosystems, longleaf pine-turkey oak sandhills and Florida sand pine scrub. I address evolutionary adaptations of Herpetofauna to these xeric environments, and how fire disturbance influences Herpetofaunal community composition by structuring habitat. Where data are available I examine how anthropogenic disturbance such as fire suppression, clearcutting, and restoration treatments can affect Herpetofaunal community composition, and whether some anthropogenic disturbance types can mimic natural disturbance in their effects. I also address possible reasons why detection of population response is more difficult for amphibians than for common reptile species.

Globally, reptiles and amphibians (i.e., Herpetofauna) make up 46% of species richness of terrestrial vertebrates, but the prevalence of Herpetofauna investigations in wildlife research and management journals has not been explored. Our objective was to review representation of Herpetofauna in 6 wildlife research journals from 1980 to 2009 to examine whether their representation parallels their contribution to global terrestrial vertebrate species richness, whether their representation has changed over time and how, and whether subsets of Herpetofauna garner disproportionate coverage relative to one another. We ran a keyword search in Web of Science database (formerly ISI Web of Science) within the Web of Knowledge search engine published by Thomson Reuters (2010) on 6 wildlife research journals (European Journal of Wildlife Research [formerly Zeitschrift fur Jagdwissenschaft], Journal of Wildlife Management, South African Journal of Wildlife Research, Wildlife Biology, Wildlife Research, and Wildlife Society Bulletin) from 1980 to 2009. We searched for 17 terms relevant to Herpetofauna (e.g., toad, tortoise). Our search yielded 315 articles that focused on Herpetofauna. Over the 30-year period, we found the number of articles and pages and percentage of journal space devoted to Herpetofauna increased. However, at best, <6% of journal space was devoted to Herpetofauna, indicating that these species are greatly under-represented in wildlife literature given their contributions to species richness and diversity and ecosystem function. Although absolute number of articles and pages has increased, little progress has been made in terms of relative representation of Herpetofauna as compared to birds and mammals. Although percentage of pages in wildlife journals dedicated to Herpetofauna has increased in the past 30 years, they must garner greater representation to enable us to adequately manage for biological diversity and ecosystem function and integrity. © 2011 The Wildlife Society.

Emergent spatial pattern of Herpetofauna in Alabama, USA
Acta Herpetologica, 2007Co-Authors: Xiongwen Chen, Yong WangAbstract:Analyzing spatial pattern of regional biodiversity and its relationships with environmental factors is important for biodiversity conservation at large scales. The emergent spatial pattern of Herpetofauna in Alabama is examined by combining thousands of historical records from 132 species of 24 families and environmental conditions. Our results indicate that species richness of Herpetofauna increases with the increase of latitude, while it decreases with the increase of elevation. A negative spatial association exists between amphibians and reptiles on the scale of 10 km2, but 40% of habitats are still shared by amphibians and reptiles at this scale. The highest species richness of Herpetofauna is in the Mobile and Baldwin Counties. Power-law relation exists between the county size and the average species richness. Total stream length, and road density are highly correlated with species richness at the county level. With the increase of annual precipitation, species richness decreases. Species richness is higher in the area with the annual average temperature around 17-18 °C. Herpetofaunal diversity in the Coosa/Tallapoosa River, the Alabama River, and the Tombigbee River basins is relatively higher than in the Perdido River and the Escatawpa River basins. The highest species richness exists at the Gulf Coastal Plain, but its species density is the lowest. The highest species richness of Herpetofauna exists in the Longleaf-Slash Pine and Loblolly-Shortleaf Pine forests, while lower in Oak- Hickory forest. The emergent spatial pattern may provide important implications for Herpetofauna conservation in the face of global climate change and large-scale habitat destruction. The spatial pattern and the possible underlying ecological processes have to be considered for the large scale land zoning and planning.

Knowledge and interactions of the local community with the Herpetofauna in the forest reserve of Quininí (Tibacuy-Cundinamarca, Colombia)

Although there has been a rise of ethnobiological studies over the last decade, little is known about human interaction with Herpetofauna in South America and Colombia. In this work, we analyzed the knowledge, perception, and interaction of a local community located in the forest reserve of Quinini (RFPCQ) in Cundinamarca (Colombia), concerning to the Herpetofauna that inhabits the area. We performed semi-structured surveys containing 30 questions categorized into three groups: academic knowledge (1), use and cultural beliefs (2), and interactions (3) related to the Herpetofauna that occurs in the region. The obtained data in question groups 1 and 2 are presented as a qualitative summary. For the question group 3, we assigned the answers to a hostility value according to the possible reaction of each individual interviewed in a hypothetical encounter with the Herpetofauna and built tendency charts in order to see the positive or negative reactions due to the birthplace (urban/rural) and gender (male/female). The community recognized the presence of amphibians and reptiles that cohabit their space, as well as their potential habitats. Besides, the role of Herpetofauna was recognized in the magical/religious traditions for some inhabitants of the region, mainly associated with the fate and cure of chronic diseases. In general, the perception of amphibians and reptiles varied according to the origin and gender of the people, which tend to have a more positive perception of reptiles than compared to amphibians in most cases. Although there was a general lack of knowledge on the part of the inhabitants of the RFPCQ about the biological and ecological aspects of Herpetofauna, the population recognized the basic information about the habitats of these animals within the reserve area. There is a wide variety of uses of amphibians and reptiles in traditional medicine. Greater efforts should be made in the transmission and dissemination of knowledge about the ecological functions of Herpetofauna.

Assessing the conservation risk of Sphaerodactylus notatus, the U.S. Herpetofaunal species most vulnerable to sea level rise

SearcyAbstract:While climate change and sea level rise threaten species across the globe, species in low-lying coastal regions, such as South Florida, are projected to face particularly severe threats. One such species is the Florida reef gecko ( Sphaerodactylus notatus ), the only gecko native to the eastern U.S., and a highly understudied species that persists in heavily fragmented habitats of only three coastal Florida counties. To assess the conservation status of this species, we conducted surveys throughout South Florida to determine potential extirpations from historic localities and to delimit S. notatus ’ current distribution. We also estimated the level of threat S. notatus faces from sea level rise relative to other species by analyzing sea level risk of all Herpetofauna in the U.S. We detected geckos in only 41% of sites with appropriate habitat, and in only 65% of historic localities. Geckos were only present within 1.2 km from the coast, and the minimum 2.2 m of sea level rise already expected based on current carbon emissions will place 85% of suitable S. notatus habitat under water. Our findings were used to update the conservation risk of S. notatus according to IUCN and Florida guidelines for listing threatened and endangered species, and suggest this species now fits the criteria to warrant listing. In comparison to all other U.S. Herpetofaunal species, we found that S. notatus is the most at risk from sea level rise due its fidelity to low-lying coastal habitats.
