    Abstract:

    Background: The present study investigated the effects of lead nitrate on the histo-cytological changes in the corpuscles of Stannius (CS) of Heteropneustes fossilis. Methods: Catfish, Heteropneustes fossilis were subjected to 657.6 mg/L and 164.4 mg/L of lead nitrate for 96 h and 28 days, respectively. Blood from fish was collected on 24, 48, 72 and 96 h in short-term and after 7, 14, 21, and 28 days in long-term experiment. Blood was collected for analysis of calcium levels and CS were fixed for histological studies. Results: Plasma calcium levels of the fish remain unaffected at 24 h. The levels decrease after 48 h which persists till 96 h. Plasma calcium levels of the fish exposed to lead for 7 days exhibit a decrease which persists progressively till 28 days. After 96 h, AF-positive cells of CS exhibit increased granulation. No change in the nuclear volume of these cells has been noticed. An increased nuclear volume has been recorded in the AF-negative cells of CS of 96 h lead exposed fish. After 14 days, the nuclear volume of AF-positive cells decreases. Heavy accumulation of secretory granules and decrease in the nuclear volume of AF-positive cells have been recorded after 21 days which pronounced after 28 days. Moreover, few degenerating cells have also been encountered. AF-negative cells of CS exhibit an increase in the nuclear volume after 21 and 28 days lead treatment. Conclusion: Present findings suggest that exposure of the lead to catfish Heteropneustes fossilis caused CS inactivity .

    Abstract:

    The acute static renewal test of a botanical pesticide - azadirachtin for the freshwater catfish, Heteropneustes fossilis has been performed to determine the LC50 values at different exposure period. The LC50 values at various exposure periods are 173.06 mg L -1 for 24h; 80.69 mg L -1 for 48h; 58.57 mg L -1 for 72h and 52.35 mg L -1 for 96h. The upper confidence limits were 196.87, 86.91, 79.20 and 70.04 mg L -1 for 24, 48, 72 and 96 h and lower confidence limits were 154.01, 74.24, 37.33 and 33.83 mg L -1 , respectively. These results indicate that azadirachtin exposure to the fish caused toxic effects.

    Abstract:

    Abstract A four-day static renewal acute toxicity test was performed to determine the LC50 value of aqueous extract of Euphorbia tirucalli latex for the freshwater fish, Heteropneustes fossilis. The LC50 values, their upper and lower confidence limits and slope functions were calculated. The LC50 values for aqueous extract of E. tirucalli latex at various exposure periods are 3.450 μl/L for 24 h, 2.516 μl/L for 48 h, 1.623 μl/L for 72 h and 1.315 μl/L for 96 h. The toxicity of aqueous extract of E. tirucalli latex exhibits a positive correlation between fish mortality and exposure periods. It is concluded that latex of E. tirucalli has higher piscicidal activity as compared with other synthetic pesticides, organophosphates and pyrethroids for the fish H. fossilis. Hence, adequate precautions must be exercised when E. tirucalli latex is being used near fish-inhabiting water reservoirs.

    Fresh water fish, Heteropneustes fossilis were subjected to 5.76 μg/L (0.8 of 96 h 50% lethal concentration, LC50) and 1.44 μg/L (0.2 of 96 h LC50) solution of cypermethrin for short-term (96 h) and long-term (28 days), respectively. After short-term cypermethrin exposure, the plasma calcium levels of Heteropneustes fossilis showed a decrease which persisted for 96 h. In long-term exposed fish, following 7 days exposure to cypermethrin there was a decrease in the plasma calcium level. This decrease persisted progressively up to 28 days. Up to 72 h following cypermethrin exposure there was no change in the AF-positive and AF-negative cells of CS. Increased granulation in the AF- positive cells of CS was recorded following 96 h exposure to cypermethrin. The nuclear volume of AF-positive cells remained unaffected. The AF-negative cells of CS had increased nuclear volume only at 96 h cypermethrin exposure. In cypermethrin-treated fish the CS remained unaffected up to 7 days. The nuclear volume of AF-positive cells decreased at 14 days. Increased granulation in the AF-positive cells was noticed following 21 days of exposure to cypermethrin. The nuclear volume of these cells further decreased. These changes were exaggerated and few degenerating cells were encountered after 28 days. No change was observed in the AF-negative cells of CS until 14 days of cypermethrin exposure. These cells exhibited an increase in their nuclear volume after 21 and 28 days treatment.

    Abstract The effects of vitamin D3, 24,25(OH)2 vitamin D3, 25(OH) vitamin D3 and 1,25(OH)2 vitamin D3 were investigated on the serum calcium and phosphate levels of freshwater catfish, Heteropneustes fossilis. The fish were injected daily intraperitonealy with these secosteroids for 10 days. Blood samples were collected at day 1, 3, 5 and 10. Serum calcium and inorganic phosphate levels were elevated by all of the treatments except for 24,25(OH)2 vitamin D3.

FL) Pelvic Fin Length, (PEC. FL), pectoral Fin Length, (AFL) anal Fin Length and (G) girth values in male and female respectively. The other measurements indicated no any significant difference between male and female of same length and weight of Heteropneustes fossilis from Lake Manchar, district Jamshoro, Sindh. Finally concluded there is an identical stock of Heteropneustes fossilis is available in Lake Manchar, District Jamshoro.

    The analysis of food and feeding habits of Heteropneustes fossilis from Manchar Lake district Jamshoro Sindh, Pakistan were assessed from 110 specimens size ranged from 5.1to 30.0 cm during March – June 2014. The study revealed that the feeding habit of Heteropneustes fossilis was found to be carnivorous with main preference of crustacean (60%) followed by animal matter (30%) and lowest preference worms (10%).The ratio of stomach weight verses body weight of H. fossilis from Manchar Lake was calculated and it indicated that the feeding activity of fish increase with increase in the stomach weight and body weight. Finally it was resulted that H. fossilis from Manchar Lake, District Jamshoro Sindh Pakistan was found to be crustacean feeder.
