news bringing semantic web technologies into news agencies
International Semantic Web Conference, 2006Co-Authors: Norberto Fernandez, Jose M Blazquez, Jesus Arias Fisteus, Luis Sanchez, Michael Sintek, Ansgar Bernardi, Manuel Fuentes, Angelo Marrara, Zohar BenasherAbstract:In the current Information Society, being informed is a basic necessity. As one of the main news bussiness actors, news agencies are required to provide fresh, relevant, High-Quality Information to their customers. Dealing with this requirement is not an easy task, but, as partners of the NEWS (News Engine Web Services) project, we believe that the usage of Semantic Web technologies could help news agencies in achieving that objective. In this paper we will describe the aims and main achievements of the NEWS project, that was just completed.

jeromedl adding semantic web technologies to digital libraries
Lecture Notes in Computer Science, 2005Co-Authors: Sebastian Ryszard Kruk, Stefan Decker, Lech ZieborakAbstract:In recent years more and more Information has been made available on the Web. High Quality Information is often stored in dedicated databases of digital libraries, which are on their way to become expanding islands of well organized Information. However, managing this Information still poses challenges. The Semantic Web provides technologies that are about help to meet these challenges. In this article we present JeromeDL, a full fledged open-source digital library system. We exemplify how digital library content management can benefit from the Semantic Web. We define and evaluate browsing and searching features. We describe how the semantic descriptions of resources and users profiles improve the usability of a digital library. We present how digital libraries can be interconnected into one heterogeneous database with use of semantic technologies.

the effect of High Quality Information technology on corporate tax avoidance and tax risk
Journal of Information Systems, 2017Co-Authors: Russell J Hamilton, James StekelbergAbstract:ABSTRACT We examine the effect of High-Quality Information technology (IT) on corporate tax outcomes. Using a measure of IT Quality constructed from rankings in InformationWeek magazine, we find that firms with High-Quality IT are able to achieve both lower and less volatile cash effective tax rates than are other firms. These results suggest that firms with High-Quality IT are able to avoid more taxes while simultaneously incurring less tax risk compared to firms with lesser IT systems. We also perform mediation analyses to investigate the channels through which High-Quality IT enables effective tax planning. Results of these tests suggest that the most important driver of our findings is timely, reliable Information facilitated by High-Quality IT. Our study contributes to both the IT and tax literatures by identifying and quantifying the returns to investments in IT in terms of more favorable corporate tax outcomes.
