Kindleberger Economista, Storico Del Capitalismo (Kindleberger Economist and Historian of Capitalism) (in Italian)
Social Science Research Network, 2011Co-Authors: Leandro ConteAbstract:The article is part of the special issue of the journal on Charles P. Kindleberger (CPK). By reviewing CPK’s works the author investigates Kindleberger’s Historical Economics analysis method. This is argued to be based on two elements: the analysis of the capitalist economies and, in particular, that of the market role in promoting competition, choice and power; the moral will to contribute to increase the awareness of economic phenomena in the public opinion.

Religious Legitimacy and the Joint Evolution of Culture and Institutions
Advances in the Economics of Religion, 2019Co-Authors: Alberto Bisin, Avner Seror, Thierry VerdierAbstract:Religious legitimacy is becoming a central concept in Historical Economics, in comparative studies of the political economy of preindustrial societies in particular. In this short chapter, we provide some preliminary insights on the emergence of religious legitimacy in the context of the general theory of the evolution of institutions and culture. We show that it is the interaction of institutions and culture that is responsible for the most relevant implications of religious legitimacy in terms of economic growth and prosperity.

LATE for History
arXiv: General Economics, 2021Co-Authors: Alberto Bisin, Andrea MoroAbstract:In Historical Economics, Persistence studies document the persistence of some Historical phenomenon or leverage this persistence to identify causal relationships of interest in the present. In this chapter, we analyze the implications of allowing for heterogeneous treatment effects in these studies. We delineate their common empirical structure, argue that heterogeneous treatment effects are likely in their context, and propose minimal abstract models that help interpret results and guide the development of empirical strategies to uncover the mechanisms generating the effects.

The arrow of time in Economics: from Robinson's critique to the new Historical Economics
The European Journal of the History of Economic Thought, 2009Co-Authors: Michael H. TurkAbstract:Abstract How time is comprehended in Economics is central to the type of discipline to which Economics is analogized. Rejecting the symmetrical notion of time in classical physics, Joan Robinson emphasized the importance of ‘Historical time’, and hence history. A new generation of economists – including Paul Krugman, Paul David, and Brian Arthur – took up Robinson's challenge, seeking to create a new Historical Economics by relating random or ‘accidental’ Historical events in different ways to the necessity of economic rules, and finding that, as Robinson saw, scale effects were crucial. Their efforts, however, fell short of integrating history into Economics.
