  • Anglophone Historicisms
Journal of the Philosophy of History, 2015
    Co-Authors: Mark Bevir, Naomi Choi
    Abstract:

This paper explores the place of Historicism in Anglophone and especially analytic philosophy. Analytic philosophy arose as part of a general modernist revolt against the developmental Historicisms of the nineteenth century with their faith in progress. Modernism inspired more formal approaches to knowledge, philosophy, and the human sciences. It is, however, a mistake to assume the rise of modernism and analytic philosophy left no space for Historicism. Three main traditions of Historicism continued to persist in Anglophone philosophy through the twentieth century. First, the lingering presence of idealism continued to inspire the Historicism of philosophers such as R. G. Collingwood and later Charles Taylor. Second, modernist historians, such as Quentin Skinner, sometimes grabbed at arguments from analytic philosophy to defend their methodological agendas. Third, the rise of holistic themes in analytic philosophy opened the way to historicist moments and themes in philosophers such as Ludwig Wittgenstein, Donald Davidson, and Richard Rorty.

  • what is radical Historicism
Philosophy of the Social Sciences, 2015
    Co-Authors: Mark Bevir
    Abstract:

This article responds to Stephen Turner’s discussion of my article, “Historicism and Critique.” I emphasize that radical Historicism consists of substantive philosophical commitments. One commitment is to a historicized epistemology that presents objective knowledge as a product of a comparison between rival webs of belief. Another commitment is to a historical ontology that presents aggregate concepts in the social sciences as inherently pragmatic. These substantive commitments provide a plausible basis for various forms of critique. They lead to analyses of genealogical and ideological critique that differ from appeals to genealogy as a kind of groundless skepticism toward, and problematization of, all substantive commitments.

  • Historicism and Critique
Philosophy of the Social Sciences, 2014
    Co-Authors: Mark Bevir
    Abstract:

This paper argues that Historicism can provide substantive philosophical grounds for critical theory and various modes of critique. Unlike the developmental Historicism that dominated the nineteenth century, we start from a radical Historicism tied to nominalism, contingency, and contestability. This radical Historicism is compatible with a commitment to truth claims, including the truth of Historicism and the truth of particular genealogies and other accounts of the world. Genealogy can be viewed as radical Historicism in its critical guise, denaturalizing the ideas it targets. In addition, however, radical Historicism provides possible grounds for both historical ontology and a revised version of ideology critique. Ideology is conceived here in relation to failures in consciousness itself rather than the alleged conflicts of a material base.

  • Post-Analytic Historicism
Journal of the History of Ideas, 2012
    Co-Authors: Mark Bevir
    Abstract:

It is a pleasure to respond to such thoughtful discussions of The Logic of the History of Ideas. I am honored that my book still attracts the interest of such impressive scholars. And I am delighted to discover these particular scholars have found my book so agreeable. It makes a pleasant change to read critics who offer friendly amendments and extensions to my arguments rather than rejecting them! Yet, maybe their siren voices call me to dangerous rocks. If we bask in warm accord, we may lose some of the sharpness of our beliefs - their distinctiveness and ability to unsettle. The charms of agreement may smooth the rough edges of ideas, gaining them acceptability by making them bland. So, in replying to these friendly critics, I want to comment on their amendments and extensions to my arguments, but also to suggest my ideas may have rougher edges than they recognize.1 The Logic described and defended a post-analytic Historicism. As a historicist, I argued that human life was ineluctably historical, so explanations of ideas, texts, actions, and practices should rely on historical narratives, not appeals to formal classifications, correlations, systems, or models. As a post-analytic philosopher, I thought of my task as clarifying the implications of our concepts for historical reasoning. It is, I believe, post-analytic Historicism that gives my ideas their rougher edges. As a historicist, I am more committed to nominalism than Al P. Martinich and far more skeptical of comparative work than Sara Jordan. As a post-analytic philosopher, I am more critical of existing practices than Martyn Thompson and more suspicious of moralism than Amit Ron.HistoricismThe word "Historicism" appeared in English at the beginning of the twentieth century to translate the Italian "storicisimo," as used by Benedetto Croce, and the German "historismus," as used by Wilhelm Dilthey, Friedrich Meinecke, and Ernst Troeltsch. Throughout the nineteenth century, most social theorists were developmental historicists who thought of human life as an unfolding of substantive or teleologie al principles. Philosophers as diverse as Auguste Comte, G.W. F. Hegel, Karl Marx, and Herbert Spencer argued that human societies were products of developmental processes. However, the rise of the word "Historicism" coincided with a crisis in Historicism. The First World War undermined belief in reason and progress, adding massively to an already nascent shift in modern thought. Throughout the human sciences, developmental Historicism lost ground to formal modernist approaches. Neoclassical economists developed a deductive approach based on a formal idea of rationality. Other social scientists adopted formal synchronic theories based on functions, structures, and mechanisms. Modernist social science implies that objects receive content from their relation to other units within synchronic wholes, and it explains objects using ahistorical laws, models, classifications, and correlations. In the Logic, I defended a radical Historicism, according to which human life consists solely of a flux of activity without any basis in a formal structure or ideological movement. There are just particular individuals engaged in particular actions in accord with their particular beliefs and desires. My radical Historicism restated the idea that explanations of human life should take the form of historical narratives. Yet, because I rejected developmental perspectives with their presumed continuities, I gave a nominalist analysis of aggregate concepts (such as "language," "discourse," and "structure") as referring only to the contingent beliefs and actions of particular individuals.Martinich and Jordan raise issues about my nominalism. Martinich describes his helpful essay as in part offering responses to some of the more prominent criticisms of my work. As I would happily support most of his responses to my critics, it seems churlish to challenge his suggestions. …

  • in defence of Historicism
Journal of The Philosophy of History, 2012
    Co-Authors: Mark Bevir
    Abstract:

Abstract This paper defends a historicist approach to the history of ideas. A historicist ontology implies that texts have meaning only for specific people, whether these be individual authors, particular readers, or the intersubjective beliefs of social groups. Texts do not have intrinsic meanings in themselves.

  • Historicism in pragmatism lessons in historiography and philosophy
    Metaphilosophy, 2010
    Co-Authors: Colin Koopman
    Abstract:

: Pragmatism involves simultaneous commitments to modes of inquiry that are philosophical and historical. This article begins by demonstrating this point as it is evidenced in the historicist pragmatisms of William James and John Dewey. Having shown that pragmatism focuses philosophical attention on concrete historical processes, the article turns to a discussion of the specific historiographical commitments consistent with this focus. This focus here is on a pragmatist version of historical inquiry in terms of the central historiographical categories of the object of historical inquiry and mode of historical periodization. After describing the basic historiographical consequences of pragmatism's Historicism, the article moves to a discussion of the philosophical results of this Historicism. The focus here is on the role that historical inquiry can play in the general philosophical perspective of pragmatism as well as on some recent texts that exemplify the dual pragmatist commitment to philosophy and history.

    Co-Authors: Colin Koopman
    Abstract:

Pragmatism involves simultaneous commitments to modes of inquiry that are philosophical and historical. This paper - which sketches out a program of interpretation developed at greater length in my recently-published book "Pragmatism as Transition: Historicity and Hope in James, Dewey, and Rorty" (Columbia University Press, 2009) - begins by demonstrating this point as it is evidenced in the historicist pragmatisms of William James and John Dewey. Having shown that pragmatism focuses philosophical attention on concrete historical processes, the paper turns to a discussion of the specific historiographical commitments consistent with this focus. This focus here is on a pragmatist version of historical inquiry in terms of the central historiographical categories of the object of historical inquiry and mode of historical periodization. After describing the basic historiographical consequences of pragmatism’s Historicism, the paper then moves to a discussion of the philosophical results of this Historicism. The focus here is on the role that historical inquiry can play in the general philosophical perspective of pragmatism as well as on some recent texts that exemplify the dual pragmatist commitment to philosophy and history.

  • What is Historicism
International Studies in the Philosophy of Science, 1999
    Co-Authors: Andrew Reynolds
    Abstract:

Abstract “Historicism” has become a ubiquitous and equivocal term. A classification is given here of five separate uses of the term currently in vogue, each provided with a unique qualifying adjective to help keep them distinct. I then offer a few objections to some of the more radical conclusions which have been drawn by proponents of a specific version of Historicism, one associated with “postmodernism “. The positions of Rorty and Putnam are contrasted as examples of strong and weak degrees of Historicism, respectively.
