We explore the links between agrobiodiversity and farm financial benefits in small-scale agroecosystems. We measured crop diversity in a subsistence-oriented agricultural production system: Home Gardens (n = 250) in the Iberian Peninsula. We calculated the imputed market value of Home Gardens' edible crops and estimated the association between agrobiodiversity and Home Gardens' gross financial value. Temperate Home Gardens harbor levels of agrobiodiversity comparable to those of tropical Home Gardens. Data suggest that an increase in crop diversity is associated with an increase in the gross financial value generated by Home Gardens. Researchers suggest that, besides the provisioning of food, fuel, and fiber, agroecosystems provide habitat, cultural, and regulating services. One type of agroecosystem that remains relatively unexplored from an ecosystem service perspective is Home Gardens. In this paper, we aim at advancing the understanding of the value of Home Gardens by conducting an assessment of Home Gardens ecosystem services. For the empirical analysis we use Home Gardens in Vall Fosca (Catalan Pyrenees). We identify and characterize the most important ecosystem services provided by Home Gardens, and conduct a valuation of the social importance of Home garden ecosystem services. The methodological approach for this work included an in-depth literature review, participant observation, semi-structured interviews, a valuation questionnaire, and a scientific panel consultation. We identified and characterized 19 ecosystem functions and related services. According to our informants, Home Gardens provide a large set of ecosystem services, being cultural services the category most valued. We found that the most important ecosystem services provided by Home Gardens differ from those provided by other types of agroecosystems.

This article a) describes Home Gardens (n = 252) in three rural areas of the Iberian Peninsula, b) explores motivations for gardening, and c) computes the gross financial benefits of crops in Home Gardens. Different from tropical Gardens, the studied Gardens specialize in edible plants, species with other uses being marginally present. Motivations for gardening relate more to people's way of living (i.e., hobby, keeping traditions) than to economic reasons. The average gross financial value of Home Gardens in our sample is 1,691 €/year/gardener, equivalent to almost three minimal monthly salaries in Spain. Home Gardens seem to also provide noneconomic benefits that help explain the maintenance of those agroecosystems.

Interest in landrace conservation has grown over the last few decades with much research focusing on the maintenance of on-farm crop genetic diversity in the tropics. Research on landraces is less abundant in temperate climates. In this paper we assess landrace conservation status in Home Gardens in Vall Fosca (Catalan Pyrenees, Iberian Peninsula). We estimate the individual socio-demographic attributes associated with in situ conservation of landraces and explore the reasons for their conservation. Fieldwork was conducted March–September 2008, during which time we surveyed 60 Home Gardens, owned by 53 tenders from 16 villages. We recorded occurrence, abundance, uses, and management of plants cultivated in Home Gardens. We also inquired about the informants’ reasons for conserving landraces. We found 148 different species. We identified 39 landraces corresponding to 31 species. Women, people over 65 years of age, experienced gardeners, and people who grow their Home garden organically were more likely to conserve landraces than people without those characteristics. Although the informants express a strong preference for landraces, they mainly grow commercial varieties. Landraces seem to be displaced by less labor-intensive commercial varieties.

Are tropical agroforestry Home Gardens sustainable?
Agriculture Ecosystems and Environment, 1992Co-Authors: Emmanuel TorquebiauAbstract:While tropical multistrata Home Gardens (or tree Home Gardens) are classically said to be sound, efficient and sustainable land-use systems, there is little quantitative evidence and detailed analysis of Home Gardens in the literature to support this. In order to strengthen the basis of this assumption and to contribute to an operational understanding of sustainability, a literature review was applied to Home Gardens, covering different bio-physical and socio-economic conditions. For this, a series of sustainability descriptors were identified, hypothesis formulated on what should be the effect of Home Gardens on these descriptors, and possible indicators confirming the hypothesis mentioned, when found in the literature. Home Gardens possess a number of sustainability attributes, with regard not only to their ability to meet a number of farmers' needs without negatively affecting the resource base, and in many cases even improving it, but also to their potential to meet several economic, social, ecological and institutional conditions which contribute to their sustainability. ?? 1992.
