    Publisher Summary This chapter reviews how Exchange 2007 Transports and routes messages from origination to destination. Exchange 2007 follows the concept of Hub Transport Servers that are responsible for the routing of all messages within an Exchange organization. Exchange 2007 also uses the Edge Server—a specialized version of a Hub Transport Server that can operate in the DMZ, and can be the first port of contact for incoming messages. While they offer the best degree of integration with an Exchange organization and deliver strong SMTP performance, the Edge Servers are optional and need not be deployed unless there is no other way to protect the organization against the polluted mail streams that arrive in from the Internet. The chapter lists and elucidates several advantages of Exchange 2007 Transport engine, including security, robustness, and simplicity.

    Publisher Summary This chapter discusses how to achieve a balanced system configuration for Exchange. Various adjustments can be made to Microsoft's basic configuration guidelines for Exchange 2007 Servers. Some of these adjustments include configuration of one Client Access processor core 3 per four Mailbox processor cores, assigning up to 1,000 mailboxes per processor core on a dedicated mailbox Server, and configuration of one Hub Transport Server processor core per three mailbox processor cores. The Mailbox Servers are the only role that can be deployed on a cluster. If clusters are deployed, it should be ensured that balanced systems are generated so that running the risk of compromising the cluster state transitions is avoided. Exchange 2007 is a great performer on SANs and performs better on storage configurations such as direct-attached or local storage. Deployment of continuous replication for Exchange 2007 can be done: in either a single-Server (LCR) or dual-Server (CCR) configuration.
