Our work regards the Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT) as a promising paradigm to consider for engagement, by its study of macro- and micro-contexts influencing the behaviour of dialogue Participants (DPs), and by its effort in depicting the accommodation process underlying the behaviour of DPs. We draw links between the accommodation process described in this theory and Human engagement that could be fruitfully used to evaluate Human-Robot social interactions. We present our goal which is to take into account a model of dialogue activities providing a convenient local interpretation context to assess Human contributions (involving verbal and nonverbal channels) along with CAT to assess Human-Robot social interaction.

Sehili, Laurence DevillersAbstract:Understanding Human behavioral and emotional cues occurring in interaction has become a major research interest due to the emergence of numerous applications such as in social robotics. While there is agreement across different theories that some behavioral signals are involved in communicating information, there is a lack of consensus regarding their specificity, their universality, and whether they convey emotions, affective, cognitive, mental states or all of those. Our goal in this study is to explore the relationship between behavioral and emotional cues extracted from speech (e.g., laughter, speech duration, negative emotions) with different communicative information about the Human Participant. This study is based on a corpus of audio/video data of humorous interactions between the nao{} robot and 37 Human Participants. Participants filled three questionnaires about their personality, sense of humor and mental states regarding the interaction. This work reveals the existence of many links between behavioral and emotional cues and the mental states reported by Human Participants through self-report questionnaires. However, we have not found a clear connection between reported mental states and Participants profiles.

Social Science Research Network, 2017Co-Authors: James G Hodge, Lawrence O GostinAbstract:On January 19, 2017, the Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP), Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and multiple federal agencies published final amendments to the Federal Policy for the Protection of Human Subjects (aka the “Common Rule”). Introduced in 1991 based on long-standing research ethics principles, the Common Rule was viewed by many as antiquated. Research enterprises previously based largely in academic and medical institutions expanded exponentially into the private sector. Conducting research moved far beyond clinical trials to extensive assessments of biospecimens, genetic data, and private health information. By amending the rule, OHRP attempts to simultaneously enhance protections for Human subjects while limiting administrative burdens for researchers. While many of the changes will not take effect until January 2018, the Rule recognizes important collective interests in science and health. In the end, treating Human research Participants with respect and fairly is essential for continuing public support of vital scientific investigations.

Content analyses find as many as three-fourths of published Human Participant studies in our field involved some form of deception, almost all of which employed experimental methodologies. However, researchers have little guidance on the acceptability of the use of deception, notwithstanding the codes of root disciplines. We turn to theories of moral philosophy and use social contract theory specifically to identify conditions under which deception may be justified as morally permissible. Seven guiding principles for research practice are formulated and their implications for consumer researchers are identified, together with practical recommendations for decision making on studies involving deception.

The RCR refers to revisions of the existing federal regulations that govern the performance of research involving Human subjects (ie, clinical research) in the United States and, under certain circumstances, when such research is also performed outside the United States. The term "common" is included because it refers to the fact that these regulations, often referred to as Code of Federal Regulations 46, is the common denominator regulations agreed to across a wide swath of federal agencies.
