load frequency control for small hydro power plants using adaptive fuzzy controller
Systems Man and Cybernetics, 2010Co-Authors: Ebru Ozbay, Muhsin Tunay GencogluAbstract:Electrical energy generation is very important due to the increasing energy need. To satisfy the need, small scale hydro power plants are constructed in addition to large scale hydro power plants. Hydro power plants have a significant role in the generation of electrical energy. Small hydro power is a kind of clean and renewable energy sources. Small hydro power has a big potential in most areas of the world. This article proposed a novel model design for small hydro power plant (SHPP) using linear and nonlinear turbine model without surge tank effects. The model was created using adaptive fuzzy logic controller. The aim of this article is to improve their implementations by developing a SHPP model without using conventional control methods. The conventional control methods require choosing individual P and I parameters for each load value whereas in the developed model this process carried out by means of a single equations by using adaptive fuzzy logic controller.

Pumped hydro energy storage in buildings
Applied Energy, 2016Co-Authors: Guilherme Botelho De Oliveira E Silva, Patrick HendrickAbstract:Abstract The growing use of variable energy sources is pushing the need for energy storage. With Pumped Hydro Energy Storage (PHES) representing most of the world’s energy storage installed capacity and given its maturity and simplicity, the question stands as to whether this technology could be used on a smaller scale, namely in buildings. In this paper, the feasibility of such an installation is analysed by modelling each one of its components and applying it to several installation scenarios. Proposed and existing installations are also reviewed, including a first-time analysis of an installation in France, which is presumably the only existing building with an integrated PHES system. It was found that the economies of scale that render large PHES installations competitive are not present in small installations. This limitation, associated to other important disadvantages, such as the large volume required, seem to point out PHES as an ill-suited solution for energy storage in buildings, an important finding for building design and energy policy. Nevertheless, if synergies with existing reservoirs could be found (for example for a building on a riverside), costs could be significantly lowered. Further research on possible synergies with other building systems as well as a life-cycle assessment analysis are recommended.

Geographic information system algorithms to locate prospective sites for pumped hydro energy storage
Applied Energy, 2018Co-Authors: Matthew Stocks, Andrew Blakers, Kirsten AndersonAbstract:Abstract Pumped hydro energy storage is capable of large-scale energy time shifting and a range of ancillary services, which can facilitate high levels of photovoltaics and wind integration in electricity grids. This study aims to develop a series of advanced Geographic Information System algorithms to locate prospective sites for off-river pumped hydro across a large land area such as a state or a country. Two typical types of sites, dry-gully and turkey’s nest, are modelled and a sequence of Geographic Information System-based procedures are developed for an automated site search. A case study is conducted for South Australia, where 168 dry-gully sites and 22 turkey’s nest sites have been identified with a total water storage capacity of 441 gigalitres, equivalent to 276 gigawatt-hours of energy storage. This demonstrates the site searching algorithms can work efficiently in the identification of off-river pumped hydro sites, allowing high-resolution assessments of pumped hydro energy storage to be quickly conducted on a broad scale. The sensitivity analysis shows the significant influences of maximum dam wall heights on the number of sites and the total storage capacity. It is noted that the novel models developed in this study are also applicable to the deployments of other types of pumped hydro such as the locations of dry-gully and turkey’s nest sites adjacent to existing water bodies, old mining pits and oceans.

the contribution of small hydro power stations to the electricity generation in greece technical and economic considerations
Energy Policy, 2007Co-Authors: J K KaldellisAbstract:Abstract Hydropower is the most widely used renewable energy source worldwide, contributing almost with 18.5% to the fulfillment of the planet electricity generation. However, most locations in Europe appropriate for the installation of large hydro power stations have already been exploited. Furthermore, there is a significant local communities’ opposition towards new large power stations; hence, small hydro power stations remain one of the most attractive opportunities for further utilization of the available hydro potential. Greece and more precisely the country's mainland possesses a significant hydro-power potential which is up to now only partially exploited. In parallel, a large number of private investors have officially expressed their interest in creating small hydro power stations throughout the country, encouraged by the significant Greek State subsidy opportunities for renewable energy applications. However, up to now a relatively small number of projects have been realized, mainly due to decision-making problems, like the administrative bureaucracy, the absence of a rational national water resources management plan and the over-sizing of the proposed installations. Certainly, if the above problems are suitably treated, small hydro-power plants can be proved considerably profitable investments, contributing also remarkably to the national electricity balance and replacing heavy polluting lignite and imported oil. In the context of the above interesting issues, the present study reviews in detail the existing situation of small hydropower plants in Greece and investigates their future prospects as far as the energy, economic and environmental contribution are concerned.
