  • reinvestigation of the henry s law Constant for hydrogen peroxide with temperature and acidity variation
    Journal of Environmental Sciences-china, 2010
    Co-Authors: Daoming Huang, Zhongming Chen
    Abstract:

Hydrogen peroxide is not only an important oxidant in itself; it also serves as both sink and temporary reservoir for other important oxidants including HOx (OH and HO2) radicals and O3 in the atmosphere. Its partitioning between Gas and aqueous phases in the atmosphere, usually described by its Henry's law Constant (K(H)), significantly influences its role in atmospheric processes. Large discrepancies between the K(H) values reported in previous work, however, have created uncertainty for atmospheric modelers. Based on our newly developed online instrumentation, we have re-determined the temperature and acidity dependence of K(H) for hydrogen peroxide at an air pressure of (0.960 +/- 0.013) atm (1 atm = 1.01325 x 10(5) Pa). The results indicated that the temperature dependence of K(H) for hydrogen peroxide fits to the Van't Hoff equation form, expressed as lnK(H) = a/T - b, and a = -deltaH/R, where K(H) is in M/atm (M is mol/L), T is in degrees Kelvin, R is the Ideal Gas Constant, and deltaH is the standard heat of solution. For acidity dependence, results demonstrated that the K(H) value of hydrogen peroxide appeared to have no obvious dependence on decreasing pH level (from pH 7 to pH 1). Combining the dependence of both temperature and acidity, the obtained a and b were 7024 +/- 138 and 11.97 +/- 0.48, respectively, deltaH was (58.40 +/- 1.15) kJ/(K x mol), and the uncertainties represent sigma. Our determined K(H) values for hydrogen peroxide will therefore be of great use in atmospheric models.

  • Gibbs paradox in classical thermodynamics is a consequence of an error in reasoning
    Abstract:

The entropy of Ideal Gases in classical thermodynamics is expressed by the formula that contains the term –nRlnn (n is a number of moles of Gas, R is Ideal Gas Constant) or equivalent formulas. For the case n = n₁ + n₂, this term has the form вид –(n₁ + n₂)Rln(n₁ + n₂). The formula for the sum of the entropies of n₁ and n₂ moles of different Ideal Gases forming a mixture contains a term of another form –n₁Rlnn₁–n₂Rlnn₂. Therefore, the sum of the entropies n₁ and n₂ moles of different Ideal Gases and entropy n₁ + n₂ moles of pure Ideal Gas are different functions n₁ and n₂ and the quantity of different form. However, they mistakenly believe quantities of the same form. This error entails the appearance of a number of the formulations of the Gibbs paradox, including the conclusion of the jump in the entropy of mixing in the transition from mixing of different Ideal Gases to mixing of identical Ideal Gases by the value of the difference of the specified terms: (n₁ + n₂)Rln(n₁ + n₂) – n₁Rlnn₁ – n₂Rlnn₂.

  • Explanation of the Gibbs paradox
    2019
    Abstract:

The Gibbs paradox is one of the most mysterious physical paradoxes. It arises when considering fairly simple questions concerning the entropy of a mixture or the entropy of the mixing of Ideal Gases, but for more than a hundred years there has not been a generally accepted explanation. This article shows that the reasoning in which the Gibbs paradox occurs contains an error. The entropy of a mixture of Ideal Gases is found by summation of the entropy of this Gases, which implies the additivity of entropy. The entropy of Ideal Gases is expressed by the formula that contains the term Rnln(V/n), (n is number of moles of Gas, V is volume of Gas, R is Ideal Gas Constant) or equivalent formulas. The function expressed by the formula of this form is not an additive function in the case when different or identical Ideal Gases form a mixture. Therefore, a quantity called the entropy of a mixture of Ideal Gases is function of different form than the entropy of pure Ideal Gas: his formula contains a term, which is not present in a formula of entropy of pure Ideal Gas. However, the sum of the entropies of different Ideal Gases that form a mixture, and the entropy of pure Ideal Gas are mistakenly considered as functions of the same form. As a result, in the reasoning in which the values of these functions are compared, inexplicable conclusions arise, known as various formulations of the Gibbs paradox.

  • silicon and oxygen self diffusion in stishovite implications for stability of sio2 rich seismic reflectors in the mid mantle
Earth and Planetary Science Letters, 2017
Co-Authors: Daisuke Yamazaki, Naoya Sakamoto, Wei Sun, Hongzhan Fei, Hisayoshi Yurimoto
    Abstract:

    Abstract Diffusion of Si and O in single crystal stishovite was examined at pressures of 14.0–21.5 GPa and temperatures of 1673–2073 K. Self-diffusion coefficients of Si (DSi) and O ( D O ) were determined as DSi [ m 2 / s ] = 2.4 × 10 − 12 exp ⁡ { − ( 237 [ kJ / mol ] + 6.0 [ cm 3 / mol ] × P ) / R T } and D O [ m 2 / s ] = 7.2 × 10 − 11 exp ⁡ { − ( 263 [ kJ / mol ] + 4.8 [ cm 3 / mol ] × P ) / R T } , respectively, where P is pressure (in GPa), T is absolute temperature (in K) and R is the Ideal Gas Constant. It was revealed that diffusion of Si is approximately one order of magnitude slower than that of O and, thus, Si is the rate-controlling element for plastic deformation of stishovite. Si diffusion in stishovite is assessed to be at least three orders of magnitude slower than that in bridgmanite under mid-mantle conditions. Therefore, it is anticipated that highly viscous SiO2-rich components subducted into the lower mantle persist as the seismic reflectors for long term without mixing up with the bridgmanite-dominated surrounding mantle.
