  • dehexing sex russian womanhood during and after glasnost
    1996
    Co-Authors: Helena Goscilo
    Abstract:

Glasnost and the collapse of the Soviet Union revolutionized Russian society. What effects, however, did they have on the status, role, and Image of Women in Russian culture? Examining the past turbulent decade of transition to "democracy" and a market economy, "Dehexing Sex "traces the ways in which Russia's concept of womanhood both changed and remained the same, taking into account dominant ideologies and social philosophies, sociopolitical organizations, Women's writings, literary criticism, film, and popular cultural forms such as pornography. The lively, engaging chapters of this book examine texts by contemporary Women writers in the context of the political, social, economic, biological, psychological, and aesthetic transformations that helped define them. Goscilo reveals that the Russian cultural revolution has reshaped the female Image in varied and often contradictory ways. While increased interaction with the West fostered gender awareness, it also introduced imported Western sexist practices--especially the exploitation of female bodies--formerly proscribed by a puritanical censorship. Popular magazines, newspapers, and television propagated the Image of woman as mother, ornament, and sexual object, even as Women's fiction conceived of womanhood in complex psychological terms that undermined the gender stereotypes which had ruled Soviet thinking for more than 70 years. With the aid of feminist and cultural theory, "Dehexing Sex "investigates the overt and internalized misogyny that combined with the genuinely liberalizing forces unleashed by Gorbachev's policy of glasnost and perestroika. It exposes Russia's repressive romance with womanhood as a metaphor for nationhood and explores Russian Women's ironic recasting of national mythologies."Impressive . . . an important contribution to Russian studies and to Women's studies. The author is an outstanding scholar, an energetic and original thinker, and her writing sparkles with imagination and wit." --Stephanie Sandler, Amherst CollegeHelena Goscilo is Associate Professor and Chair of Slavic Languages and Literatures, University of Pittsburgh.

  • efficacy of psychosocial and physical activity based interventions to improve body Image among Women treated for breast cancer a systematic review
    Psycho-oncology, 2018
Co-Authors: Helena Lewissmith, Phillippa C Diedrichs, Nichola Rumsey, Diana Harcourt
    Abstract:

© 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Objective: Body Image concerns warrant attention among Women who have undergone treatment for breast cancer, due to their significant consequences for psychological and physical health, and interpersonal relationships. This paper systematically reviews the effectiveness of interventions on body Image outcomes among this group, in order to inform health care provision and strategic directions for research. Methods: Fourteen electronic databases were searched for articles published between 1992 and 2017 that evaluated interventions with Women who had undergone treatment for breast cancer in controlled trials with at least one body Image measure. Data were extracted and studies were assessed for their methodological quality using the Cochrane Collaboration tool for assessing risk of bias. Results: Twenty-one articles evaluating 26 interventions met inclusion criteria. Nine interventions significantly improved body Image at either post-test or follow-up (ds=0.15-1.43), with none reporting sustained effects across all time points. Effective interventions comprised psychotherapy, psychoeducation, or physical activity, were delivered at different treatment stages and mostly adopted a multisession, face-to-face, group format. However, only 4 interventions were evaluated within methodologically rigorous studies and are therefore recommended for use by health professionals aiming to improve the body Image of Women at different stages of treatment for breast cancer. Conclusions: To advance the field, we recommend a less biomedical disease- and treatment-focused approach to interventions, and instead a more biopsychosocial theoretical approach targeting broader modifiable psychosocial influences upon body Image. Replication and randomised controlled trials of greater rigour are also required to improve the methodological quality of studies.

  • The effect of breast reconstruction surgery on body Image among Women after mastectomy: a meta-analysis
Breast Cancer Research and Treatment, 2013
    Co-Authors: Su-ying Fang, Bih-ching Shu, Ying-ju Chang
    Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to analyze the available evidence concerning the effects of breast reconstruction (BR) on body Image of Women with breast cancer. BR is a potential intervention to improve the body Image of Women with breast cancer. Conflicting research findings about the effects of breast reconstructive surgery on body Image compared to breast conservative surgery (BCS) or mastectomy exist. A meta-analysis of studies found in MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsychINFO, PubMed as well as PQDT (dissertation and theses), and other unpublished literature resources from 1970 to 2010 were searched. Comparable studies that examined the difference of body Image between breast cancer Women receiving mastectomy plus BR and those with BCS were included. A clear definition about the domains of body Image including body stigma, body concern, and transparency were identified. Mean effect sizes were calculated. Twelve studies were included in the meta-analysis. Women with BR and BCS were no different on the body concern domain of body Image. However, Women with BR had a significantly worse score on body stigma domain of body Image than Women receiving BCS. Women with BR had a better body Image score than Women with mastectomy. Women who are satisfied with their body shape may still perceive deficiencies because of the stigma of mastectomy and affect on body Image. Consistent application of valid and reliable measures of body Image specific to breast cancer Women is needed.
