  • how much is an Incoming Message worth estimating the call externality
    Information Economics and Policy, 2017
    Co-Authors: Christian Rojas
    Abstract:

Abstract A feature of electronic communication markets is that a consumer's decision to join or use a communications network can generate two effects on other users of the network: a network externality and a call externality. The former effect is defined as the benefit that users receive when a new subscriber joins the network (an expanded customer base can now be reached). The existence and magnitude of this effect is important from both theoretical and policy points of view. As a consequence, its empirical importance in various network markets has been documented in the literature. A call externality is defined as the benefit that a consumer derives when receiving a Message (e.g. call) from another user, and it plays a crucial role both in the equilibrium predictions of theories of network competition and in the results of recent empirical work; however, as opposed to the network externality, no attempt has been made to quantify its empirical importance. In this paper I report results of a study designed to elicit and estimate the call externality. The data were generated using a stated-preference choice experiment designed to match theory and several characteristics of the mobile industry in Ecuador. To enhance the external validity of the results, the choice experiment was administered to over 2,500 individuals using 492 different internet-equipped government-run locations throughout the country. I find that call externalities are quite important in this market, but that their intensity depends heavily on the type of call (on-net v. off-net) as well as on the type of user (pre-paid v. post-paid). The call externality parameter for on-net calls is estimated at 0.67, while the significance of the call externality for off-net calls is significantly smaller (economically and statistically). Further, I find that the existence of call externalities in the market are mostly driven by pre-paid users.

This paper reports the results of a study designed to elicit and estimate consumers’ valuation of Incoming calls (measured as the ratio between the marginal utility of an Incoming call with respect to the marginal utility of an outgoing call – a value that is, theoretically, bounded between zero and 1) in the mobile industry in Ecuador. The data was generated using a stated preference choice experiment designed to match theory as well as several characteristics of the industry in this country. To enhance the external validity of the results, the choice experiment was administered to over 2,500 individuals using 492 different internet-equipped government-run locations spread throughout the country. My main finding is that call externalities are quite important in this market, but that its intensity depends heavily on the type of call (on-net v. off-net) as well as on the type of user (pre-paid v. post-paid). The call externality parameter for on-net calls is estimated at 0.67 while the call externality for off-net calls is significantly smaller and often statistically insignificant. Further, I find that the existence of call externalities in the market are mostly driven by pre-paid users as the parameter ceases to be important when post-paid users are excluded from the estimation.

  • is it beneficial to use internet communication for escaping from boredom boredom proneness interacts with cue induced craving and avoidance expectancies in explaining symptoms of internet communication disorder
    PLOS ONE, 2018
Co-Authors: Elisa Wegmann, Matthias Brand, Sina Ostendorf
    Abstract:

The use of online-communication applications including messengers (e.g. WhatsApp) or social networking services (e.g. Facebook) on the smartphone has turned into daily practice for billions of people, for example during waiting times. An increasing number of individuals show diminished control over their usage of these applications despite negative consequences in everyday life. This can be referred to as Internet-communication disorder (ICD). The current study investigated the effect of boredom proneness on symptoms of an ICD. It further examined the mediating role of cognitive and affective mechanisms, namely expectancies to avoid negative feelings online and cue-induced craving. The results of a structural equation model (N = 148) illustrate that boredom proneness is a risk factor for the development and maintenance of an ICD as it had a significant direct effect on ICD symptoms. Furthermore, boredom proneness predicted avoidance expectancies as well as cue-induced craving. Both in turn enhanced the risk of developing ICD tendencies. Moreover, both variables mediated the effect of boredom proneness on ICD and interacted among each other. In summary, the results demonstrate that people who have a higher susceptibility to experience boredom show higher expectancies to avoid negative emotions online, which promotes higher craving reactions when being confronted with specific cues (e.g. an Incoming Message), and could result in ICD tendencies.

  • interference aware Incoming Message detection for mpi threaded progression
IEEE ACM International Symposium Cluster Cloud and Grid Computing, 2013
Co-Authors: Masahiro Miwa, Kohta Nakashima, Akira Naruse
    Abstract:

To enable overlap of computation and communication with non-blocking collective communication, it is required to progress asynchronously a sequence of communications. One of the naive implementation is to use a separate thread for communitation and run it in back of computation thread. However if the total number of threads is greater than the number of physical cores, context switches cause performance degradation of the computation thread. Simultaneous MultiThread (SMT) can be used to avoid this problem. However, commonly-used busy polling for Incoming Message detection also causes performance degradation of the computation thread. In this paper, we propose Incoming Message detection method using MONITOR/MWAIT instructions to reduce the performance degradation. Experiment results show that the performance of computation thread is improved largely compared to the busy polling method while latency is suppressed by a small increase.
