    Abstract:

    Abstract The thesis aims for solving the misplace of supply and demand between personnel training and target market of Industrial design specialty. It adapted the methods of investigation, interviewing, induction, etc. Through early market investigation, the design talents of market demand were subdivided into different levels. It summarized the relevant market requirements of professional quality and specific skills of different levels of professional talents. It studied the multi-level program planning, development, the innovation, practical link reform, the innovation environment and platform for the establishment. The resource pool of talent supply and demand was established by career planning for students. A “generic” training issue was found in current training mode and a systemic personnel training strategy of multi-level Industrial design talent was proposed. The research results will be applied and improved in the process of training talents in the future.

    Abstract:

    Although the term “Industrial Designer” is a well known title, the understanding of Industrial design as a profession is still unclear, as evidenced by its application in the sector. In light of this, schools of Industrial design should, despite the immense contributions to the sector made by their past graduates, continuously revise their curricula and review their deficiencies to provide a better correlation between their graduates and the needs of the industry. The aim of this study is to ascertain the role of the Industrial Designer from the perspective of industry by analyzing the specifications stated in job adverts for the recruitment of Industrial Designers. This study was conducted in three phases. In the first phase, an in-depth literature review was completed. The second phase was dedicated to the identification of the Industrial Designer in terms of education institutions, and to realize this, the curricula and course contents of Industrial design undergraduate programs selected from ten universities in Turkey were analyzed. The third phase was directed towards identifying the profile of the Industrial Designer from the perspective of industry. Thus, the analyses were made through an investigation of the job opportunities available in the Industrial design profession announced in seven major job search websites during the last 4 months of 2009. The results of this study are crucial for all parties involved as they help to satisfy the recruitment expectations of Industrial design education, the industry, and the graduates.

The Schools of Industrial Design should constantly revise their curricula and overview their deficiencies in order to provide a better correlation between their graduates and the needs of the industry, despite of the immense contribution to the sector, made by their past graduates. The aim of this study is to ascertain the role of Industrial Designer from the gaze of industry by analyzing the specifications stated in the job adverts for the recruitment of Industrial Designers.     Abstract:

    The manipulation of colour, form and texture within a commercial design activity is a core competency for an Industrial Designer. The job of the Industrial Designer is to use colour, form, texture, temperature and movement to deliver a sensory experience that evokes a desired response. The core deliverables of an Industrial Designer are embedded within an evidence-based and user-centred approach to product design. Social functionality may often be most easily seen through the delivery of Brand. The aim of this paper is to provide education practitioners with a template to facilitate the introduction of Brand construction to undergraduate Industrial design students through the visual and physical embodiment of a product. The objectives of this paper are to: provide signposting to the underpinning theories of the template; describe the template; show examples of student work that demonstrate the outcomes of template application; and, highlight where students have used the template within brand related design competitions to produce successful design outcomes.

    Abstract:

    This paper reviews the importance of sketching to Designers and clarifies the key techniques used at different stages of designing. The analysis of the author’s sketching expertise is described and a survey of undergraduate perceptions of sketching was carried out using the Nominal Group Technique (NGT) and a questionnaire. A revised strategy for the teaching and learning of sketching to first year Industrial design and technology undergraduates is outlined and early observations of its implementation are reported.

    Abstract:

    How do product Designers create multiple concepts to consider? To address this question, we combine evidence from four empirical studies of design process and outcomes, including award-winning products, multiple concepts for a project by an experienced Industrial Designer, and concept sets from 48 Industrial and engineering Designers for a single design problem. This compilation of over 3450 design process outcomes is analyzed to extract concept variations evident across design problems and solutions. The resulting set of patterns, in the form of 77 Design Heuristics, catalog how Designers appear to introduce intentional variation into conceptual product designs. These heuristics provide ‘cognitive shortcuts’ that can help Designers generate more, and more varied, candidate concepts to consider in the early phases of design.
