    Co-Authors: Martha Elena Urbina
    Abstract:

The author of this essay intends to present her vision regarding the training of future generations of Industrial Engineers in the UNA, through a documentary review. It seeks to contribute new elements that can serve to encourage improvements in the curriculum of the Industrial Engineering career at the National Open University (UNA), around the rise and transformation experienced by the training of Industrial Engineers who will act in a scenario As complex as the technological developments of the twenty-first century, together with changes in the political, social and economic life of the country. Hence this essay focuses on the progress and transformation of knowledge through the academic training of the Industrial Engineer, a key factor for the productive work that the Industrial Engineering professional is called upon to fulfill, in which the value has increased Of operational knowledge and has revealed the link between learning and productivity in organizations. Within this context, Industrial Engineering is one of the main development mechanisms of the country, since it provides added value to products and services, due to its close relationship with industry and technological advances. By the nature of the subject, for the development of the writing, was considered the experience and the facts already studied in university organizations; Therefore, the search for information through secondary sources was used, in order to deepen the subject, based on three basic pillars: innovation, the development of knowledge in the area of Industrial Engineering and Their link with organizations.

  • application of circular economy techniques for design and development of products through collaborative project based learning for Industrial Engineer teaching
    Sustainability, 2020
Co-Authors: Jaime Gonzalezdominguez, Gonzalo Sanchezbarroso, Francisco Zamorapolo, Justo Garciasanzcalcedo
    Abstract:

Collaborative project-based learning aims to get students to take responsibility for their knowledge processes. The objective of this research is to analyze the viability of applying circular economy techniques for the design and development of products, through learning based on collaborative projects in Industrial Engineering. A survey was carried out between 2015 and 2019 on final year students of Industrial Engineering in Spain, from five different academic years. The responses obtained were analyzed statistically. The results indicate that the students who had more previous knowledge about the circular economy, valued its relevance for the design and development of products as well as for the practice of the profession more. In addition, it was demonstrated that the implementation of circular economy strategies in the design and development of products through collaborative projects allows the acquisition of different knowledge: eco-design, product planning and distribution, reuse, recycling, etc. Moreover, most of the students considered that the circular economy should be a complementary discipline and a transversal competence.

  • Applying Multiattribute-Based Group Decision Making Techniques in Complex Equipment Selection Tasks
    Group Decision and Negotiation, 1997
Co-Authors: Ljubisa Vlacic, Michio Amagasa, Akira Ishikawa, Theodore Williams, Giichi Tomizawa
    Abstract:

A practicing Industrial Engineer, even an experienced decision maker, needs help in the sense that there is a necessity to use more logical or analytical decision support tools, especially when dealing with control and instrumentation projects which are often worth millions of dollars. In this article we propose an algorithm which can support the process of group decision making relating to Industrial automation, especially involving the selection of control and instrumentation equipment. The aim of this article is to look only at the algorithm's application and how it is applied. To this end, two test cases are used as examples: (1) selecting a local area network for installation in an academic environment; and (2) selecting an integrated control system for a real-world pulp and paper mill. Obtained results show that the algorithm leads to a satisfactory solution. A software form of the algorithm is being programmed for use as a decision support tool.

  • Application of Industrial Standards to Bus Maintenance Procedures
    Transportation Research Record, 1997
Co-Authors: Robert E Paaswell, Laurence Audenaerd, Mohsen A. Jafari
    Abstract:

To increase productivity and achieve promised operating budget savings, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority of New York City wished to optimize bus maintenance routines throughout its different divisions. New York City Transit and the Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority entered an agreement with the Local 100, Transport Workers Union of America of Greater New York, AFL-CIO to form a team of delegates, under the supervision of a mediating Industrial Engineer (IE), to create standard task times for 26 specified bus maintenance core procedures. Within 90 days, this process intended to (a) create fixed standards for each task, and (b) reduce times now spent on certain jobs. Throughout the process, labor and management were urged to articulate rationales and listen to explanations. Predictable arguments were initially cited, but these evolved into discussions of new approaches or considerations agreeable to both sides. In a disagreement, the IE tried to narrow differences and facilitate agreement on an intermediary value determined by timed demonstrations. The method invoked an iterative process of negotiation, converging upon the final agreement, which proved to be an interesting heuristic in general for similar mediation processes. This process of union and management coming together on issues of productivity is certainly not new and has been studied in the past. But, at a time when all transit budgets are under fire, issues such as saving jobs while reducing costs assume great importance.
