MacíasAbstract:Information Architects analyze conceptual models and descriptions concerning non-functional requirements that will be later on used by Analysts and Software Engineers to design software artifacts. However, this flow of Information is sometimes difficult to automate due to conceptual knowledge differences in the Information processed by each expert. To facilitate this flow, in this paper we propose a CASE tool called InterArch. Our tool bridges the gap between both professionals, and it automatically generates UML diagrams for Analysts from the conceptual diagrams created by the Information Architect.

Our research aimed to identify and understand the work practices that define the position of Information Architect as well as the human-computer interaction and usability issues that are relevant to their work. Our findings show that the work practices of Information Architects are far broader than those included in the popular technology design literature. A major issue that emerged from the research was the ongoing struggle of Information Architects to bring user-centred design methods into the design and development processes used in their organisations. A thorough knowledge of human-computer interaction and usability principles increased the ability of individual Information Architects to influence design processes.

A role with no Edges: The work practices of Information Architects

(152 words) For those working in technology design environments, Information Architect is a recently defined job title used to describe the people who are responsible for designing ‘how everything is organised’ (Krug, 2000. p. 4) in a web application. While the recent growth in the use of Information Architect as a job description implies an established and shared understanding of the meaning of the term this meaning has nevertheless been remarkably contested. As one of the Information Architects interviewed for this research remarked: ‘It’s just a source of endless idle argument on the newsgroups when the profession could be getting on with better things'. So, our starting point here is that Information Architecture is at least part of the work that people who are called Information Architects do and Information Architecture is a process within the design of systems.

Information Architecture for the web: the IA matrix approach to designing children's portals

The Information Architect begins by inputting the portal's objective, target user, and target content. The matrix then determines the most appropriate Information Architecture attributes for the portal by filling in the Applied Information Architecture portion of the matrix. The article discusses how the matrix works using the example of a children's Web portal to provide access to museum Information.
