Quality of Information Literacy and ICT Skills among the Women Students in two Women’s Universities at Tamilnadu, India: a Study

The data were retrieved from Mother Theresa Women University, Kodaikkanal and Avinashilingam University for Women, Coimbatore, and Tamilnadu, India. There are 300 questionnaires were distributed, 252 questionnaires were collected back. Data have been analyzed with simple analysis. The study found that these two women universities have good environment with Wi-Fi and providing well equipped laboratory and library. The majority of the students are using database and other electronic resources for their research work and studies. The women’s students have excellent knowledge of ICT and Information Literacy Skills

Yangtze Medicine, 2017Co-Authors: Hawa OsmanAbstract:This study examined the searching Skills and extent of usage of electronic databases by Nursing, Midwifery and Public Health Nursing students in the University of Health and Allied Science (UHAS). The focus was on forty (40) level 300 students drawn from a universe of two hundred and forty six (246) of the School of Public Health (SPH). The study used quantitative method approach and the survey instruments were questionnaire, interview and observation. The data collected were analyzed and classified into the following themes: usefulness, extent of use, determinants of use of e-databases, searching Skills, and main drawbacks of learning Information Literacy Skills (ILS). Although all the respondents strongly agreed that e-databases are indispensable for academic and professional practice, findings revealed that majority of them have low quality of searching Skills and that accounts for the sparse use of the e-databases. This positive association is proven by Pearson’s chi square test (0.000). The study also established that students’ attitude, academic loads and methodology of teaching were the challenges hindering the acquisition of ILS of students. As a consequence, the study recommends that Academic librarians should intensify their education on e-databases, the development of research guides and encourages stronger collaboration with faculty members in the teaching of ILS so that student nurses would be more adept in searching for Information to enhanced scholarship and professional practice.

a comparative study of Information Literacy Skill performance of students in agricultural sciences
The Journal of Academic Librarianship, 2018Co-Authors: Tomaž Bartol, Danica Dolnicar, Bojana Boh Podgornik, Blaž Rodic, Tihomir ZoranovicAbstract:Abstract The aim was to assess the Information Literacy (IL) of 310 first- and second-year students enrolled in nine different study programs at the School of Agriculture (Faculty of Agriculture), Novi Sad, Serbia, using an adapted version of a validated IL test (ILT) in an e-environment. Because the school does not provide systematic IL education, another purpose was to raise awareness of the importance of such instruction. ILT results were assessed according to five ACRL (Association of College & Research Libraries) standards, as well as three cognitive levels adapted from Bloom's taxonomy. The mean ILT score was 46.35%. Students were most successful in Information evaluation and Information need identification, and least successful in legal/ethical issues and Information use. As expected, IL Skills increase from the first to second year of study. Cognitive Skills also increase, except for the highest level (applying knowledge), where all student groups are weak. Different study programs attract students with disparate knowledge/Skill levels gained during secondary education, where some groups of first-year students may outperform second-year students in both IL and cognitive abilities. It is thus important to offer IL education to all students in order to provide a basis for more balanced academic progress.

Attitude of Undergraduate Students to Information Literacy: Bowen University Experience

A descriptive survey design was adopted for the study and a multi-stage sampling method was used to select a sample size of five hundred participants spread across disciplines and levels of study. A questionnaire containing closeended, structured items was used to gather data from the respondents and descriptive analyses, including percentages and frequency count were used to analyse the data collected. Three research questions were developed and answered and three research hypotheses were tested through the instrument. Results show that students’ attitude to Information Literacy significantly influences their Information Literacy Skill and students’ perception of Information Literacy significantly influences their Information Literacy Skills. Although perception of IL does not predict influence of IL on students, attitude to IL determines the influence of IL on students’ Information Literacy Skills. The study further revealed that the erroneous equation of technology Literacy with Information Literacy was largely responsible for students' lukewarm disposition to Information Literacy. The study concludes by recommending a paradigm shift from the traditional teaching delivery to a technology-driven, interactive pedagogy that will ginger the interest of the students and thus effect the desired attitudinal change to IL

evaluation of Information Literacy Skill development in first year medical students

The learning of Information Literacy has been embedded in the University of Western Australia (UWA) medical course since 2000. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the enhanced Information Literacy program with respect to medical students' Information Literacy Skills. The Australian and New Zealand Information Literacy (ANZIIL) Standards were used to define the Information Literacy Skills required by medical students, and the Information Skills Survey for Assessment of Information Literacy in Higher Education (ISS) was used to determine students' self-perception of Information Skills. Two cohorts of students were evaluated - one that had teachers who had been coached by librarians and one that had no teacher coaching. This study substantiates others' findings for ANZIIL Standards 2, 5, and 6 for beginning medical students. Higher median scores were obtained for Standard 2, 5, and 6. Lower median scores were obtained for Standard 3 and 4. Persistent significant positive differences were found for Standards 3, 4, and 6 at the beginning of Year 2. The coaching of teachers has made Information Literacy Skills more explicit in the curriculum for learners and teachers as Skills that need to be developed and practiced deliberately.
